Even Mike Shanahan Has Thoughts On Brett Favre

Mike Shanahan released this statement about Brett Favre --

"Brett Favre is one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of professional football. You're judged by winning, and he's won more games than any other quarterback who has ever played. But I will remember him just as well for being such a fierce competitor and an outstanding leader.

"He was the face of the Packers and a great credit to our game. It was an honor to coach against him."

Did Brett die or just retire???

Why all the hate?
I know we all have this intense hatred towards the East coast bias that permeates our whole society.  BUT that doesn't mean we have to be so vehemently against anything the East Coasters believe is news.  Brett Favre is a legend and he is retiring.  I remember Elway being BIG news back in 1999, I even watched an all day special on Elway on ESPN Classic that year.

I say let one of the NFL's all-time greats have his final moments of glory, because never again will he have any glory on the field of play.

You can't compare Favre manlove to Elway
Yes, Elway got the expected ESPN attention when he announced his retirement.  HOWEVER, Elway NEVER EVER EVER received the adoration and fawning that Brett did.  I never really understood either.  Elway was good to the media, a "kid" on the field, and even more fun to watch than Brett.  I'd say give Brett his due, but hell, he's been getting it for years now.  East coast/NFC bias reigns supreme.

ZAPPA!!
His F'n wife read a poem before the Packers played the Broncos, then spent the 2nd Quarter in the booth.  That is just the tip of the ice-berg with Favre and the media love.  And as for being a legend...it takes more than numbers for me to say that regardless of what the talking heads want me to believe...

lol
I agree, it was a complete knob job the media was giving Favre and his wife on MNF last year.  I was right there with you talking about how pathetic it all was.

My only point was that Favre is getting the retirement respect he deserves being an All-Time great.  That being said, there has been a large gap in between All-Time great QBs in my opinion.  When Elway retired he was among several All-Time greats to retire in the late 90's, so with Montana, Marina, Young, Elway, Moon, ect...lots of great QBs were leaving the game.  That leaves only Favre.  It must be a generational thing, and Favre was an abberration to the generational changing of the guard.

I'm with Zapparulez on this.
He is a legend and certainly deserves h.o.f. (de-emphasisi added) entry on the first ballot. Besides, he showed nothing but respect for Elway.

Again...
No doubt Brett is a great player, a hall of famer, but I don't feel the need to "honor" him or kneel before him.

We can all agree to disagree, but the complete and utter bias and hypocrisy by the national media, along with the total buy in that Favre is one of the best ever because he compiled stats is a bit sickening to me.

There is not one moment in his career that I can think of that I thought to myself, "That was amazing"....How many moments like that did we have with Elway?

by John Bena on Mar 4, 2008 4:24 PM MST reply actions

There were a few games I was "amazed"
watching Favre play.  That MNF game the day after his dad died was pretty amazing.  His god damn 83 yard TD pass to begin OT against the Broncos was pretty freaking lucky ass amazing.

But yes, I agree...I was amazed at least 47 times during Elways career. ;)  The most amazing was probably the 92 divisional playoff game against Houston.

I certainly don't feel the need to kneel ...
..before him either.  I want to qualify by saying that I'd take Elway any day over Farve.  And I agree the national press has fawned over Farve way too much, but I think that's more their fault than Farve's.

But honor him; yes.

By far...
You have seen alot more greatness in the NFL than me, Jack and I respect your opinion.  I just keep trying to find a big moment, I mean, a really big moment the past 10 years where he came up big and I can't think of any.

Dude had the ball at the 40 yard line with over a minute to go in Super Bowl XXXII and did nothing.  That moment was there for the taking.  I'm not convinced the Packers don't lose Super Bowl XXXI if it wasn't for the MVP of that game, Desmond Howard...

Six INT's against the Rams in the playoffs.
Whatever the hell that pass was against Philly in the playoffs...
And of course, his completely uninspired performance against the Giants in the NFC Championship game.

Of course, none of that was Brett's fault....

by John Bena on Mar 4, 2008 5:15 PM MST up reply actions

Some of those records...
...are not based on how well he played, but how long.  Heck, any QB that plays for that many years would rack up some numbers.  Some of the records where he passed Elway were just because he (Favre) didn't have the grace to retire when he should have.

An average QB could play for 20 years and get more wins than any other QB.  Some stats just don't have that much meaning to me, and that's how I feel about a lot of Favre's records.

On the other hand, he was fun to watch and I would count him as a legend.  I just share your view that I get sick of hearing about his legend status during a prime time game when something is happening on the field worth talking about and the commentators are too busy fawning over the man's wife.  (She IS a babe though).

Is this where I put it?

Breaking News...Farve to Run as
Obama's VP!  Think about it.  Tonight Obama knocks off the Clinton machine.  Conveniently Favre retires the same day.  And who better to run with another "god-like" figure that the media swoons over than Favre.  Just imagine it... (Wayne's World dodododo....)

Obama has a message of hope and change.
Favre plays like a kid and is willing to throw it into triple coverage for the sake of the nation.

Obama used drugs.
Favre used drugs, threw up and used drugs again!

Obama is eloquent.
Favre is a lovable hick.

Obama has an obnoxious wife.
Favre has a wife who the media will cut to for half of the State of the Union address.

etc etc etc...  I'm serious, folks; that would be an unstoppable ticket!

My take
  1. Favre is one of the legends and a link to the past for a lot of us who have watched football for a lot of years.
  2. The media does fawn over the guy too much.  As Guru points out, the corny BS that Broncos fans were subjected to during a prime time game (in which Cutler was only mentioned if he was being compared to Favre) was too much to stomach.
  3. I blame the media for the fawning, not Favre.
  4. On the other hand, the guy is selfish for not stepping aside sooner so the team could pursue younger talent.
  5. If anyone remembers the phrase "My Brett, our Favre" being repeated over and over during that game, you might get a sense of where the (toungue in cheek) hatred comes from.

I Could Care Less...
The pundits can say what they want and I could care less, but the respect he's garnered from his contemporaries is impressive.  The sheer vlomue of his work is quite awe-inspiring and his style was enjoyable.  I agree that his iconic moment will always be the lights-out performance on MNF after his father passed away.  I feel no need to kneel before him or any other athelete (with the exception of Roberto Clemente and others like him whose reach went far beyond their playing field) but I will give him his due today.
