SBNation Mock Draft Underway, Broncos Are On The Clock!
![]() |
Brian Galliford, head blogger over at BuffaloRumblings, Matt Miller from Mocking The Draft and Owner of New Era Scouting, as well as yours truly have joined together to provide SBN NFL blog fans as well as NFL Draft fans - with the most interactive and informative mock draft we can possibly offer. (So if you're visiting this morning from another excellent SBN NFL blog, be sure to create an account here to make comments on each pick!)
Here's how this works - each NFL blog community of SB Nation (plus a few guests) will be playing decision-maker for the NFL team that they cover. Each "GM" will make their team's selection, back up the selection with analysis, and then Matt Miller will take it from there with analysis of the player and pick. We sincerely believe that you won't find a more insightful and accurate mock draft anywhere else leading up to draft day.
More details:
* 3 picks per day. We plan on posting three picks per day here, so be sure to lock your browsers in to Mocking the Draft and check back morning, early afternoon and evening!
* No Trades. Last year, we included trades in our mock draft, which made for entertaining discussion but also caused delays. We're eliminating trades this year in the hopes of getting you picks as quickly as possible, so feel free to offer trade suggestions in the comments section.
* Two Rounds. We went three rounds last year, and time was short when we wrapped up. This year, we will go two rounds - but if we find that there's extra time, we may decide to try to squeeze out that third round. Stay tuned for an update on that situation.
* Partnerships. Partnering with New Era Scouting, each pick will be chock-full of player analysis; we're really excited to have Matt's input on each and every pick this year for that reason. We also have a second partnership in the works that we'll announce over the next couple of days.
The first 11 picks are in --
#1 Miami Dolphins - DE Chris Long
#2 St. Louis Rams - DE Vernon Gholston
#3 Atlanta Falcons - OT Jake Long
#4 Oakland Raiders - RB Darren McFadden
#5 Kansas City Chiefs - DT Sedrick Ellis
#6 New York Jets - DT Glenn Dorsey
#7 New England Patriots - CB Leodis McKelvin
#8 Baltimore Ravens - QB Matt Ryan
#9 Cincinnati Bengals - LB Keith Rivers
#10 New Orleans Saints - CB Dominique Rogers-Cromartie
#11 Buffalo Bills - WR Malcolm Kelly
The Broncos are on the clock! Start bringing some suggestions on what we should do. The pick will be revealed tomorrow at 10AM(est)!

Great news....
For the record Guru, I think drafting best available in the top 15 is a must, despite position. Even if it means a RB or WR. Personally, I hope we trade down to about 17. More familiar drafting territory for our Mastermind.

I dont know what to do

I hate to say it but....
I think a pick this high demands consideration for talent over need. This area of the draft typically has elite defensive talent. 2007 - P Willis 11th. 2006 - H Ngata 12th, K. Wimbley 13th. 2005 - D. Ware 11th, S Merriman 12th. 2004 - J Vilma 12th. Last years 12th pick was no offensive slouch - M. Lynch 12th overall. So recent history says we could hit a home run with this pick.
Having said that, my list would be:
- DE D. Harvey - I know we invested two high picks on this position last year. But Harvey is going to be a freakish talent. Moss has great talent, but his body cannot hold up to his own quickness. His injuries, both in college and pros, were examples of a body that is going to continue to be injury prone. But if I'm wrong, what's wrong with having three solid pass-rushing ends?
- RB R. Mendenhall - This would be the shocker of the draft. Denver has been fortunate the last decade finding backs to fit the system late in the draft or afterwards. Shanahan stated clearly he would have taken Maroney if he hadn't been able to trade for Cutler in '06. Last years draft had two elite RB and both were gone by the time we picked. Denver has gone two consecutive drafts without picking a RB. Shanahan is on record saying Young is not an every down back. Do we really want to go into another season with Henry as our only starting caliber talent? Maybe this pick wouldn't be such a shocker after all.
- OT R. Clady - This pick would fill a need and fulfill best available at the position. I would be surprised if he is even available. This discussion should be about C. Williams. But since we are talking about the SBN Mock, Clady it is.
- WR - M. Kelly, D. Thomas, D. Jackson - WR is the toughest position to take in the first. They have a horrible track record. You are as likely to find a great WR in the 4th round (Marshall) as you are in the 1st. Having said that, it is hard to argue against the speed of the undersized Jackson (who has great hands and runs precise routes according to his honor Jerry Rice). The athleticism of Thomas or the intimidating size of Kelly. One of these guys will probably be gone by 12. My vote is to wait and take Bennett in the second. We love our QB, give him his guy.

Clady

Clady or .....Merling
All the scouting reports I see on Merling keep reminding me of the reports on Crowder, who I think was an absolute steal in the late second last year. At some point, "looks good in shorts" is not as valuable as "Looks good actually playing football", which was the case with Crowder.
