With The 11th Pick In The MHR Community Mock NFL Draft...

The Buffalo Bills, represented by amirebram, select....

MALCOLM KELLY, WR - OKLAHOMA

G.M - amirebram -- The Bills would have like a CB, but the top 3 guys were all taken. They also have a need for a RT. But given their long time solution at LT, I believe that this is too high a pick to spend on RT.

Kelly isn't a safe choice at all, but he is a safer pick than Hardy (character), Sweed (health), or Jackson (size).

A lot of people have hyped Thomas at WR, but he isn't the best pick. He doesn't play as fast as his timed speed. Just look at his yards/catch. He isn't a deep threat you need at a high pick like this.

Ducet is a very safe and decent pick, but like Bennett he has limited potential. Teams look for something really outstanding for a pick this high.

Anyhow, Kelly has nice hands, which is a must for any WR. I think Kelly is only second to Bennett in actually catching the ball once it is near him. So in this sense he is a better pick than most of the guys I already mentioned.

He has really nice size and outstanding athletic ability, which gives him that high potential.

The Draft So Far --

#1 - Miami Dolphins - DE Chris Long, Virginia
#2 - St. Louis Rams - OT Jake Long, Michigan
#3 - Atlanta Falcons - DT Glen Dorsey, LSU
#4 - Oakland Raiders - RB Darren McFadden, Arkansas
#5 - Philadelphia Eagles(via Trade w/ K.C. Chiefs) - DE Vernon Gholston, Ohio St.
#6 - New York Jets - DB Leodis McKelvin, Troy St.
#7 - New England Patriots - CB Dominique Rogers-Cromartie, Tennessee State
#8 - Baltimore Ravens - QB Matt Ryan, Boston College
#9 - Cincinnati Bengals - DT Sedrick Ellis, USC
#10 - New Orleans Saints - CB Mike Jenkins, USF

The Next 5 Picks --

  1. Denver (7-9) -- ejruiz777
  2. Carolina (7-9) -- Jaxon
  3. Chicago (7-9) -- WCG
  4. Detroit (7-9) -- tbell61
  5. Arizona (8-8) -- Broncofornia

Actually
This could turn out to be a decent pick. I liked him in college and he played in an elite division so I think he could turn out alright

From Bill Simmons's latest mailbag
at ESPN

Q: During the NFL draft, will the final shame of SpyGate arrive if the NFL decides to make the Pats sit there uncomfortably for the entire 10 minutes for the 31st pick they can't use?

SG: You know, even as a Patriots fan, I appreciate the comedy here. The clock could be counting down as ESPN repeatedly showed our war room glancing around like high school kids waiting to get called into the principal's office, and Chris Berman could be saying things like, "Four minutes to go for No. 31, and again ... (overly dramatic pause) ... T.J., Mort, Mel, you really have to hope Belichick and the Patriots learned their lesson here ..."

Agreed
I think you are right on with this pick.  For the Bills in particular, a red zone threat like Kelly is the perfect compliment to Lee Evans.

Isn't he getting old anyways?
It takes most WR 2 or 3 seasons before they are really ready. So the Bills needed to start thinking about replacments.

Agreed.
A good solid pick with less risk than other options.

Thanks.
Kelly is pretty talented. My only knock on him is that he is pretty soft. For a big guy, he is easy to bring down.

Nice breakdown of the
difference between first round WRs and guys like Bennett, as well.  Very concise.

Given the difference I would still rather Bennett.
I tried to do what the Bills would do. Had it been me, personally, I would not have gone WR at #11. I would have used the 11th pick on Williams or Harvey.

Bennett is such a safe choice that I would rather pick him with the 11th pick in the 2nd than get a WR this high. Some would say it is a reach based on his "potential," but if the guy turns out to be another Rod Smith then I would gladly pull the trigger.

Look at D Ryans (Texans LB). He was another great solid player who didn't have that high potential to go in the first ... yah. Frankly our own Crowder could end up being better than Mr Potential Moss.

There is so much more to a player than Potential. We all know this.

WOW...
In my JAX-notes (who has need at WR), i have written that i would only take him, if he slips to 2nd round...

His knees are, in my oppinion, as big a health issue as Sweeds - bigger actually.

But i guess thats me being the odd-ball, according to the positive comments you recieve, anyway:)

From Denmark, so i excuse my self for un-knowing-ness...

Well,
There are a number of decent receivers in this years draft. They are all differeny types, but they all have very close grades.

If you look at DE for example, Long is #1, Ghostlin is #2, and Harvey or Merlin are #3 & 4 everywhere.

But if you look at WR, in one place they have Kelly #1, in another he is #5. In one place Bennett is #6, in another he is #11.

These guys are just so close that it is hard to tell who is better. IN My Estimate, there are 7 WR who deserve to be drafted between #30 and #40. That's a mess for people who do mock drafts. Teams like different types of receivers. How you weight in things such as size, character, and injury history can change a lot of things in a group like this.

What makes it even worse is that the guys whit slightly higher potential are the ones with more risk. While guys like Bennett and Doucet, who are much safer bets, aren't as big or fast.

It's a mess.

Great pick, amirebram!
And here's why:
  • Kelly recently visited with the Bills, and his supposedly creaky knees got a clean bill of health from Buffalo's award-winning doctors (see: Everett, Kevin).  He performed very well on and off the field during his meet-and-greet, and he's by far the #1 WR on Buffalo's board right now.
  • The Bills' need at WR is MUCH higher than it is at cornerback.  We have four corners who have a legitimate chance at starting, so it would be a waste of a first-round pick to draft a corner and muddy up that situation even further.  WR is the only realistic option here, though they could surprise and draft a safety or a defensive end.
  • The Bills need a wideout who can play on the outside, catch passes over the middle, make plays after the catch, and run block corners into the ground.  Kelly is the only receiving prospect this year who excels in all four areas.
So good pick!  Also, we don't need a RT - the team was very pleased with the play of Raider castoff Langston Walker last season, and he's still got four years on his 5-year, $25 million deal.  If we take an offensive lineman, it'll be a center.

Thanks for swinging by Brian!
I hope you know how much everyone here was pulling for Everett.  We're all grateful that he's done so well with his recovery.

Best of luck to you and the Bills this year!

Thanks for the info.
I really felt like I was doing what the Bills would do.

As I said earlier, this wasn't a personal choice of mine.
