REPORT: Broncos Sign WR Samie Parker

Nothing official from the Broncos, but it appears as though the Broncos have signed former Chiefs WR Samie Parker --

Though the AFC West is becoming a division of bigger receivers, the Broncos went against the grain and reached an agreement in principle with 190-pound Samie Parker of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Samie Parker

Parker's agent, Jordan Woy, was out of the country Monday, but he was putting the final touches on a contract for Parker. Terms of the deal weren't available, but it was close enough that Parker was making preparations to sign the contract.

The 27-year-old Parker started 22 games over the past two seasons for the Chiefs. He caught 41 passes in 2006 and 24 passes in seven starts last year. Parker was a 2004 fourth-round pick of the Chiefs.

At the owners meetings more than a week ago, Chiefs coach Herman Edwards said teams in the AFC West were moving to taller, bigger and more physical wide receivers because of the physical zone defenses in the division. Last year, the Chiefs used a first-round choice on Dwayne Bowe, who is 6-2, 221 pounds. The Raiders brought in Javon Walker.

Nothing heard along the Darrell Jackson front.  I will be getting Chris from Arrowhead Pride to give us his thoughts on Parker.

Questionable signing
I don't mind signing sammy parker but it doesn't make much sense to me.  He's not going to be very productive if he's not in the slot and we already have Stokley.

That said, I think a gem in this year's draft is K-State's Jordy Nelson.  Anybody who lives in Big 12 territory remembers how much impact he had on a decent-at-best team.  He's big (around 6'2'', 215) and still runs a 4.5.  He's got good hands and isn't afraid to go over the middle.  He's a converted QB so he has good knowledge of routes and defenses.  Smart, physical, fearless receivers aren't a trend.  His combination of ability and knowledge of the game will allow him to contribute much sooner than most young WRs.

If the Broncos grab Nelson in the mid second our passing offense would be golden for years.

I miss Al

Samie?
I believe this is the same guy who narrowly beat out the now departed Eddie Kennison for the 2nd WR spot. I believe Eddie was cut by the Broncos for performance reasons rather than character flaws. I do not understand this signing.

I was under the impression
that he retired from the NFL to leave Denver in the middle of a season...
I wasn't a football fan then, so I could have misheard the story.

Your impression...
is correct.  He was the original cry baby in Denver.  Imagine being in the locker room with Rod Smith.  Quitters couldn't possibly last!

Like I said in the Burton Diary,
Samie Parker? Kerry Colbert? Darrel Jackson? Say Wah??? I hope Cutler turns into Steamin' Willie Beamen because he's not going to have anyone to throw to that's a threat. B-Marsh either a.)hurt b.)in jail c.)double covered. Stokely, covered. Scheff Covered. Line is blah so our running game will suffer. Okay. Nice. Let's go Kerry!

Mike better be projecting as one of these guys getting cut, because we have about 38737 safeties who are older, a new lb corps essentially and a whole mess of needs on offense.

Okay, Ed McCaffery is no longer in the NFL. He RETIRED. Terrell Davis has 2 blown out knees. He RETIRED. John Elway isn't coming back. He RETIRED.

Will someone please tell me why Shanny is trying to build a team that is a carbon copy of 1998? It's a different time period. We had a good o-line, not now.

In today's game, offense first then D. Who cares if the D only gives up 21 pts and Cutler is on the sideline with a neck brace after running around?

Dude....
I always look forward to these rants from you.  I think this expresses a lot of our feelings.  What in the world is going on?  It's almost as if our Mastermind has been taken hostage and been replaced by Matt Millen.

But in times like these, I try to remind myself that Shanny has forgotten more about football than I'll ever know.  Despite what my alter-ego screams!

He's not huge
but I remember when he was coming out of college that he was generally thought of as a burner. Even if he doesn't take over the #2 spot, he's an upgrade over Martinez at #4 and could probably be a decent kick returner. If it's not for too much money, I don't mind.

Denver Post says Sammie got the minimum
$605K plus a $40K signing bonus.  Like Cecil Sapp, his base salary will only count $445 towards the cap if he makes the team.

Looks like all we need to do is watch
for any players being released as a sign of another player being brought in.  Bye bye Antwan Burton, hello Sammie Parker!

I'm not sure how valuable it is to bring in Chef rejects, but he is likely here just to compete against the guys we will actually keep.

If you ask me, Burton for Parker is a HUGE upgrade...Burton was awful for us.  ;)  I would be an upgrade over Burton. :P

Shotgun approach, not just for the draft anymore!
Looks like Shanny is going to have an all out competition during camp this year.

From a Chiefs fan
Parker had his chance in KC to excel and he never really turned the corner. Just look at his stats. Playing along side Tony Gonzalez and Dwayne Bowe last year certainly didn't help but Parker had cemented his legacy in KC before 2007.

He's not a fan favorite - mainly because of his over zealous first down celebrations.

I don't see Samie Parker excelling in Denver for any particular reason but who knows?

I'll send more Chiefs fans over here today to talk about Parker.

You Chiefs fans are too nice around here...
you make it hard to feel contempt for our divisional rivals. :P

Cheifs fans have class
on a whole more than other division rivals. I always love the KC DEN games because they both have good fans. If only We didn't have to worry about trash in oakland and an inept qb in SD.

As much as I hate the Chiefs...
Their fans are solid.  In fact, I have gone to a handful of Broncos @ Chiefs games in KC and nothing makes me miss Mile High more than Arrowhead stadium.

Scarlet & Gold are great colors
Not a fan of any division rivals, but just got to love the colors of the USMC being used by KC.  Have there been any Marines that played for the Chiefs?

parker
Power in numbers is the main reason for this signing. Its becoming quite obvious ol' Shanny believes Marshall's injury might take a little more time to heal than originally thought. We are stockpiling wr's- many of whom have produced little for their previous teams. Colbert might turn out to be the best free-agent signing of this off season.
