The 2008 NFL Draft Day Open Thread -- 1st Round(21-31)
Two-Thirds of the way through the draft. Is it me, or are we flying through the First Round???
#21 Atlanta Falcons -- OT Sam Baker -- Another trade, another surprise. I felt that Baker would be available early in the 2nd round, but it's obvious the Falcons didn't agree. The Falcons need help on the O-line if new quarterback Matt Ryan is to stay alive.
#22 Dallas Cowboys -- RB Felix Jones -- Jerah Jones went to Arkansas, Felix Jones went to Arkansas. How cute is that. Seriously, Jones provides a worthy replacement to Julius Jones and much needed insurance for Marion Barber III.
#23 Pittsburgh Steelers -- RB Rashard Mendenhall -- What a pick for the Steelers. Great value for Mendehhall, who slips all the way to 23. With Willie Parker already there Mendenhall won't have to come right in and perform. A perfect situation for him and the Steelers.
#24 Tennessee Titans - RB Chris Johnson -- That is a shock. an absolute shock. It makes little, if any sense. Everyone knows I love Johnson, but the Titans don;t need another "athlete" on offense. They already have one in Vince Young. An odd pick to say the least.
#25 Dallas Cowboys - CB Mike Jenkins -- The Cowboys move up a couple slots to get the Corner they need. Anthony Henry is becoming less and less effective and will probably move to safety. Terrence Newman is still up and down. Jenkins will solidify the defensive back.
#26 Houston Texans - OT Duane Brown - Give credit to Kubiak, he knows what he needs and he goes and gets it. The Texans need to infuse that O-Line with youth and Brown, while overshadowed by the other OT's in this draft, is a solid prospect. Add this selection with the picks acquired when they traded down, and this is a good move.
#27 San Diego Chargers - CB Antoine Cason - The Chargers have a solid corner on one side, and add another here. Their hope was a running back would fall to this spot. It didn't happen, so they went defensive back, a position of need on a team with few.
#28 Seattle Seahawks - DE Lawrence Jackson - The Seahawks signed Patrick Kerney last year to improve the pass rush. They add some more pass rush, this time through the draft. Many thought the 'Hawks qould go QB. I didn't and neither did Mike Holmgren.
#29 San Francisco 49'ers - DT Kentwan Balmer - The Niners have all kinds of needs on the offensive side of the ball. Because of that, the Niners went D-Line. A lineman that, on the surface, doesn't appear to fit their scheme.
#30 New York Jets - TE Dustin Keller - It just wouldn't be a First Round in the NFL Draft without the Jets taking a TE. Classic. The booos rained down inside the ESPN Zone, boos that only a J-E-T-S fan could do.
#31 New York Giants - S Kenny Phillips - The Giants had one glaring need, at safety. Phillips should come in and play right away for a team that has pretty good depth, especially on defense.
That ends the First Round of the 2008 NFL Draft!!! Time to eat!

The last few picks were agonizingly slow...
I think Broncoland is a bit bummed our team is so quiet. We all like to be movers and shakers. Oh well…Clady better pan out or we’re destined to mediocracy.
I don't think
his potential failure is devastating or anything. I think his potential success will be more impactful than a potential failure.

#42 will be here before we know it.

What is going on?!?
It’s like everyone forgot Mendenhall exists…maybe we can pick him up in the second. lmfao
okay I think you had

Won't happen.
There’s no way Houston can pass him up at that point. Pittsburgh might even want him with Parker dealing with some injuries last year. At this point, I can see a lot of teams being interested in Mendenhall.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 26, 2008 3:40 PM MDT up reply actions
Thats cool too it pushes Johnson back
Davis to the Hall!
by Jon Tollerud on Apr 26, 2008 3:41 PM MDT up reply actions
With
the unexpected drop of Mendenhall, you think maybe we’re talking about possibly moving up to snag mendenhall if he’s still around. Oh, nevermind. He’s the pick for the Steelers.
Trade Up?
At this point, if we thought about Mendenhall at #12, we have to be interested in trading up to get him. I wouldn’t do it, but it might be a consideration.

hmmm
I remember a few years back when Shaun Alexander fell int he draft, a lot like Mendenhall has this year. I wonder if his career will turn out similarly.
wouldnt that put the icing on the cake

If Clady turns out like Ogden
I’d rather have him than an Alexander-type.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 26, 2008 3:47 PM MDT up reply actions
Maybe it's just me
but Limas Sweed to TN seems too natural of a fit to pass up, which means they draft Mike Jenkins.
OR
A revolutionary new offense featuring Vince Young as a HB, only half the time he passes it while the other QB is a decoy.. The key to this is them drafting Brian Brohm right here.

Genius
We’ll never see it coming
Davis to the Hall!
by Jon Tollerud on Apr 26, 2008 3:50 PM MDT up reply actions
See
they’ll disguise it by having the center snap the ball through the Up QB’s hands and it’ll be like the read offense VY ran at UT.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 26, 2008 3:51 PM MDT up reply actions
I used to be happy taking him in the 20s
at 42 it would seem cool. However, if Chris Johnson is also there, where’s the upside of Jackson OVER Johnson?
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 26, 2008 3:50 PM MDT up reply actions
umm
he is just too small for me personally.
Davis to the Hall!

That's a reach like
Donte Whitner was a reach at 8 a few years ago. A total WTF.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 26, 2008 3:52 PM MDT up reply actions
That was an enormous wtf
because an obvious need and an obvious talent that filled said need was there with Brady Quinn. The WR pool this year is a bit…lackluster, but how the hell is Vince Young going to win them games? He’s just not that good.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 26, 2008 3:55 PM MDT up reply actions
Yeah
I don’t think WR is a huge need, though if Earl Bennett ended up in Denver, you wouldn’t hear a complaint outta me.

wow, looks like Curtis Lofton just became a bronco..

BOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
Both for the Chargers in general and to the idea of them getting Balmer. Let them take one of these WR with question marks.
good pick
the kid was really talented, and it’s not like SD has tons of holes to fill. Combine him with Cromartie and we might have to used to running the ball past an unsuspecting Merriman.

We have a 2
his last name is Colbert. I think that was one of the most underrated signings in the league.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 26, 2008 4:14 PM MDT up reply actions
Also a good idea
why not plan for 2-3 years down the road in a deep QB draft, instead of having your hand forced when you realize your longtime starter doesn’t have it anymore. Love the line of thinking.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 26, 2008 4:14 PM MDT up reply actions
Personally I would pick Henne

It would show some growth
by the NFL talent evaluators who always seem to salivate over fast guys with crappy receiver skills.
It’s also an indictment on weak this crop really, truly is.

Inconsistent college DT goes to inconsistent 9ers.
He seems like a good fit for that team of talented underachievers. Zappa must be loving the weak picks of the Bay teams.

by A.J. Haefele on Apr 26, 2008 4:24 PM MDT up reply actions
They already have a good young QB, he just needs
protection and a few playmakers.
by Arctic Bronco on Apr 26, 2008 4:27 PM MDT up reply actions
By my count
the ACC, Pac 10 and SEC all have 6 players picked so far with two picks left in the first
Keller is sitting there
and I don’t think they have one. A big, physical receiver might be good too because by now the league has Coles figured out.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 26, 2008 4:26 PM MDT up reply actions
However
they had to get ahead of the Giants, who is actively trying to trade Shockey to the Saints and was prolly banking on Keller being there.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 26, 2008 4:27 PM MDT up reply actions
good point
but the Jets fans don’t care. They remember Kyle Brady, Anthony Becht, and Johnny Mitchell.
at least Keller was taken at 30
This draft has been so weird

I did! Someone else mentioned his words here before the
pick went through. There is NO escape I tell ya!!! ;)
I don't see
the Giants going after Merling. They already have Umenyiora. Tuck, and Kiwanuka. I know they moved Kiwi to LB, but he’s not natural there and belong as a DE. They’re just buying some time until Strahan retires.
Amani Toomer will be 36 this year...
they might be finally looking at WR. They get to pick the best one available….lol
they pick Jon Tollerud WR Lakewood High School lol
Davis to the Hall!
by Jon Tollerud on Apr 26, 2008 4:33 PM MDT up reply actions
I fee like I have called WR for about 8 of the past 10 teams to draft...
eventually I will get it right!!! Then again, the one team I say no WR they will end up drafting one. :P
I'm really stumped
but they might make Devin Thomas the pick, leaving him to team with another former Spartan in Burruss. But I dunno.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 26, 2008 4:33 PM MDT up reply actions
maybe Phillips goes to giants?
