That Leaves Goff at ILB?

I think
Goff will continue to slide for a little bit, but he does become more of a hotter prospect without many left in front of him.

so i was just talking to myself

With
all the available DTs here, I think Denver should be looking to pickup Justice. Houston picks right before us, and I think he’s good enough value that we grab him here. I say that knowing I didn’t expect Bryant to be here in the 4th, but I still think Justice (if he gets to us…) is the priority.
Uhm
heya. Yes, Moore is there, as are Okam, Bryant, and a few others. Which is why I think Justice should be the pick. Take our chances, and grab one of the DTs remaining with our 2nd 4th.

Since our pick is here
I think the list of guys I like for this pick are….Justice, the DTs, Tashard Choice, Martin Rucker, and possibly Craig Steltz.
Justice and Bryant

Interesting.
I thought of Lichtensteiger, but absolutely not in the 4th round. Suffice it to say, I’m not real happy. This kid OVER Justice???
A center!
I’ll have fun spelling that name.

He's a prospect
but AHEAD of Justice is going to be very difficult to explain.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 27, 2008 10:15 AM MDT up reply actions
Of course
but all we have is looking at the guys on the board and what we know already. I trust our FO and Shanny to do what they believe is best, but at the same time, I’ve put a lot of time into some of these same prospects and I have my opinions, too. This was a slight disappointment, even if I got the position correct.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 27, 2008 10:18 AM MDT up reply actions
possible explanation
He’s a prospect so we can get him onto the practice squad, whereas Justice would probably be snagged if Denver cut him after training camp. But that is a risky way to use a 4th rounder.
Hypothetical question
Would you want to be a fly on the wall in the Broncos War Room if the tradeoff was that yuo could not report back on what you heard?
Yes.
In a heartbeat. I’d do a lot of things too gruesome for Fear Factor to be in the Broncos War Room.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 27, 2008 10:16 AM MDT up reply actions
I thought that initially
But I think it would kill me to have all that inside info and not be able to talk to anyone about it.
I would have no problem with that.
Being in their War Room is one of the things I would absolutely love to do in my lifetime. It would be the greatest two days of my life.

He Seems Fine.
He seems very much like Justice from his scouting report, actually. Just getting over the shock now…

I told you guys not to get your hopes up!
Now take a few deep breaths and let’s do some research. You know the Broncos have some guys getting paid a lot of money to outhink ALL of us. In the meantime, yeah, it looks pretty strange, huh?
By the way, we can nickname the guy “lick” (ewwww), or K-El (like Superman).
I’ll do some research and get back…

Lichtenwho is identified as a good ZB Center
My four draft guides identify him as a good fit for our team, plus he has the versatility to play both Guard positions. Sounds okay, but I wanted a run stuffer!
Rucker gone
to the Browns, so another name to remove from my wishlist. The DTs are all still there, though. Steltz I think is still a possibility, and to be honest, a Kicker wouldn’t be too shocking, either.
WOW! K-El doesn't look so bad after all...
They can make the write-ups look the same (as Ejru says), but they can only assign one rank number to each player.
Of the OCs in this draft, K-El ranks -
3 overall#5 initial quickness
#4 mobility
#4 pass block
#5 run block
#2 strength
From TSN -
Bottom line: Lichtensteiger is the type of center who often gets overlooked because he lacks great size and athleticism, but he definitely helped himself at the Senior Bowl. Lichtensteiger will not be a high draft pick but should become a solid NFL starter.

Denver's been pretty good with late linemen lately
...and we may have just gotten our backup for Nalen! Who knows. Let’s go youth on the line!
Think of him as
this year’s Chris Kuper. Smaller schooler, bit more overlooked prospect, but a solid guy the team thinks it can develop just in time for the next wave of linemen.

Denver's too TE oriented for that...
...and seems to prefer having depth at RB and using the est blocker of the group as a blocker (and someime screen pass threat). But I agree, a true FB would be a nice pick-up.

I agree.
I advocated a center for the last pick (though a different one, lol) with the idea that a DT or two would be gone before our pick and we’d still have a solid pick. So far, it looks like it will shake out that way. I love the list of available guys and didn’t think it would shake out like this. I hope we take advantage of it, but I can’t shake the nagging Craig Steltz feeling.

I guess this is what makes the draft so much fun
Williams seems to have the same measureables and body type as Darrent.
Holy crap
I understand trying to improve the special teams, but to the point of reaching for a kid like this at a position of strength is ridiculous.
He'll definitely be a special teamer...I guess that's why they brought him in.
Give me a break! Will we get a DT at all? lol
Does Denver keep 9 DB's on the 53 man roster?
Champ, Bly, Foxworth, Paymah, Abdullah, Lynch, McCree, Manuel and Jack Williams?
Or even more importantly, would Denver keep 9 DB’s active on the 45 man game day roster? And if not, who is gonna sit for Jack Williams? I don’t think he’ll see the field all year. I think they will see what he can do in practice and he will be good insurance if both Foxworth and Paymah leave after this year
Speaking of missing tackles...
Dre also misses tackles in the madden game, they make it realistic! :)
Oh well, it’s been fun to say the least
I try to be the calm in the storm...
...but this is the first pick I’m stumped on. He ranks very low compared to other CBs in the draft. VERY low.
We have depth at CB, but will have several tough decisions at about the same time in a few years. To tell the truth, I think this is purely a STs coverage move, and not a depth move at all.
"Greater is an army of sheep led by a lion, than an army of lions led by a sheep" Defoe
Yeah
Which is what my above comment was attempting to convey. I get wanting to make ST better, but to do it at a position of strength, and this early, is downright baffling.

Yeah, but he went to Chicago, and lately Chicago's not the best place for developing prospects :)
Just ask Rex and Cedric. (Defensively though, you know the Bears are gonna be great … Hester, Harris, etc.)
Forte Could Be Travis Henry

Jack may also be a practice squad player.
By the way, if we use him in the box does he become a Jack in the Box?
Sorry. My turn to start drinking.
"Greater is an army of sheep led by a lion, than an army of lions led by a sheep" Defoe
Yep at this point might as well
All the DTs will go that we mentioned Denver will be quite lucky to nab one….although Choice and Hart are still there, as is Okam and whoever else, but its only a amatter of time
I don't understand the desire for Hart
He has plenty of it, and he loves the game of football, but I don’t think he’ll excel with us.

Thanks for the read! Great find, and a balanced look at the player. The links within the story are good too.
My problem is that he is a good fit for a zone team (like INDY), but his man-coverage skills just don’t work for me. On STs his ability to go after runners looks solid, and he won’t face a lot of heavier players. I would also like him in zone, where he has SAF support and can go for bigger hits. But in man (which our CBs do) and in a system where we use a SAF in run support, I just can’t see Jack fitting in.
He looks like a potential project (if he can be redirected on a practice squad), and/or an immediate help on STs. Just my opinion.

Well,
...so far I think many of us expected Clady as a strong possibility at 12th. No harm there.
Royal was a surprise in the second, but a second look says he’s a good pick.
Lich was out of left field, though OC seemed like a good move. Folks seemed stunned, but the pick was ok.
The Williams pick seems to have hit the Bronco faithful below the belt. Everyone knows me as a DBs kind of guy, but I have a hard time with this one.
Here’s how I grade our picks so far -
Clady “A”
Royal “B”
Lich “C”
Williams “D”
First day average A-
Second day (so far) average D+
Anyone?
"Greater is an army of sheep led by a lion, than an army of lions led by a sheep" Defoe
I'd say
That the D is very generous. He’s a noted ST ace, and Shanny has made it clear he wants to improve that area of the team. That’s all good and well, but I think he took this one step too far. I loved his Day 1 and his apparent willingness to let the draft come to him, but this seems to revert to his old pattern of “I NEED THIS. SCREW EVERYONE.” It really bothers me.
I really like the pick at center, as yo can see if you scroll up and note I was all over the idea. I just wanted the other one. I’m fine with the kid we have, but I thought Justice was the superior prospect. At this point, it looks like Justice is experiencing his own Greg Eslinger freefall. Too bad. He would have been good in blue and orange.
The Williams pick hurts. I’m real unhappy with it.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 27, 2008 11:26 AM MDT up reply actions
The Williams pick
has me really bummed out. I cannot figure it out. I’m going through potential scenarios in which Fox and Paymah leave after the season, and then trying to understand how this kid fits in when he is a Cover 2 prototype. Just…what?? I just, it makes very little sense to me.
we shall have to wait and see
I read one scouting report that talks about how he is surprisingly good at bumping WR off the line for someone his size and that he supports the run well. And then I read another that said the exact opposite.
I also saw another profile of Williams
that ends with this:
Underrated prospect who is a lot better than his senior film would indicate…Prototypical nickel or dime back.
(Not sure why I am defending this pick so much. I wanted a DT)
That's also a factor
is what was left on the board when this selection was made. A much bigger area position of need had lots of talent on the board, but we went elsewhere. I see he also had injuries problems, and is 5’9’’. If there was ever a time to want to be that fly on the wall, this is it. I would LOVE to hear the justification for this pick.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 27, 2008 11:30 AM MDT up reply actions
Williams had 93 tackles, 11 PBUs
3 INTS, 1 FF & 2 FRs in 07. All this with injuries to both ankles and a shoulder injury. Good numbers for any CB, especially one who was injured. He must be tough. Let’s give him a couple of years and remember that Shanny has been doing a great job of drafting and developing CBs the last several years.
Last night I made a list
with 40 names I wanted to keep an eye on. More than half of them are still undrafted, but at this point I will predict that Denver takes none of them.
My list, too.
I have a very intriguing punter, two kickers, a popular RB, and some strong DTs sitting there. And I feel totally confident none will get drafted.

Sometime
in the midst of me being hurt over the last pick, our first 5th rounder has snuck up on me. Let’s reload the ole six shooter and go get em again.
None of them
will be taken before the Broncos and all will be taken after the Broncos’ next pick.

He could take a LB spot from some of our underachievers then move to SS in a year or two.
by Arctic Bronco on Apr 27, 2008 11:39 AM MDT up reply actions
Another thought
is that even though our starters are set, they will take a LB to provide competition as a backup/special teamer.
My actual thought
is they might decide to reach again for a guy like Ben Moffitt, but if it’s a LB, I want Goff.
by A.J. Haefele on Apr 27, 2008 11:39 AM MDT up reply actions
I'll go with the H's
Ali Highsmith, Erin Henderson or Marcus Howard (but I would not complain about Goff)
I'm just not interested in OLB.
Otherwise I’d be right there with you. I didn’t think Highsmith was a 5th rounder. I thought he was a 3rd type talent. What do I know? lol
