Denver to take advantage of oakland nightmare?
It may be starting sooner than I predicted.
A few weeks I ago I wrote a post about a nightmare scenario called Salary Cap Hell. I discussed a scenario where a team can spend so much money, that they have to cut big name players each year to stay under the cap. The trap is entered when the penalty for cutting that player rolls into the following season and cuts the funds the team can use on the rest of the salaries. The following year the team is worse off than before. It turns into a horror show of a cycle until the team slashes the roster and brings in low paid zombies just to stop the increasing penalties from building every year.
Now enters a report from ESPN. RB Rhodes is out because (you guessed it) because the raiders have gone over the cap limit. Rhodes departure will hit oakland in the form of a salary cap penalty.
There had been speculation from some that oak owner Darth Davis didn't cut Rhodes before because he was afraid Denver would snap him up. Rhodes has some personal issues, and frankly I wouldn't want him. But he is an excellent RB that could fit our system, and it would be hard to pass on him if he hit the market.

Character
With the direction we have taken with character players it wouldn’t seem to be a fit. I still think Henry is going to be a horse this year and repay Shannahan for his support in yards from scrimmage .

Let's not forget that...
Henry has taken two big steps. First, he stayed clean all year (people will still struggle to forget that he only scored a false positive on a test this year. Media types still insist on claiming he had “troubles” last year, but in fact he took several tests through the season and passed them all). Second, he took a salary cut after doing nothing more “bad” than being injured much of last year. Walker took the less sacrificial role in the same situation and went (quite literaly) to the dark side.
I agree with you on Henry.

I agree
He doesn’t seem like a horrible person, but I like this new trend of “add quality people.” Besides…does Rhodes bring anything to the table that Denver doesn’t already have at RB? If he does, I don’t see it. Not that he’s a bad RB…just superfluous, IMO.

To be fair to Rhodes...
He can be an every down starter, and has a nice blend of speed and power. He can also catch, and is a decent blocker. He was very, VERY good in INDY and would be excellent in Denver because he would have a system that better fits his running talents. As you read though, he did have some off field issues in oakland. (To my knowledge he was a good guy in Indy. Perhaps the “dark side” in oak affected him. A lot of young guys go downhill over there).

Fair enough
I guess his disappearance into the black hole made me lose sight of his positives (as is often the case.) Thanks for setting me straight!

I mentioned this elsewhere
but I would give first dibs to Indy on snagging Rhodes for cheap money for a farewell tour contract in the city that made him. They need the depth because they aren’t really happy campers with KK.
