Case Against Thomas Dropped

Marcus Thomas

First a false positive from Henry and some sorrow and regret from that angle and now a dropped case on the cocaine charges from Thomas?  I'm liking what I see here.  Marcus is going to be something else going into the year...and he's young.

The Florida state attorney's office has dropped its case against starting Denver Broncos defensive tackle Marcus Thomas.

Thomas was arrested in March in Clay County, Fla., for cocaine possession. However, formal charges were never filed. According to the Clay County clerk's Web site, the case was abandoned Friday.

Thomas' attorney, Charlie Truncale, said Friday night that he had spoken with assistant state attorney James Boyle earlier in the day and was told the case had been dropped.

"It's over," Truncale said. "I'm so pleased for Marcus."

Great news

I am very releived to hear this news, Thomas will be a stud this year. May have to deal with some inconsistency from the young guys on the D-line, but overall, with Moss back and Ekuban along with the addition of Robertson our D-line should border on dominant this year. A rotation of Doom, Ekuban, Crowder, and Engleberger at DE and then Thomas, and Robertson inside really excites me, especially if Powell can contribute in year one. Good news just keeps comin for the Broncos, here’s hopin it all adds up to the playoffs this year…..........Go BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Something to chew on.

Here’s something to consider:

First a false positive from Henry and some sorrow and regret from that angle and now a dropped case on the cocaine charges from Thomas

I wouldn’t link the two. Both people were innocent (false test result / the drugs and gun didn’t belong to Thomas). But Henry did nothing to deserve the furor around a false positive, while Thomas foolishly went to a party where idiots were drinking (Thomas himself felt he was too drunk to drive) and was hanging out with “friends” who carry guns and drugs (he knew these guys since high school). Adults (and ones that have the rare priviledge to make so much money and play sports) shouldn’t be “partying” or going to clubs etc. They need to grow up.

Exactly..........

Let’s hope Thomas has learned his lesson about his decision making and the people he hangs out with. I hope Shanny had a talk with him about that. Might be a good idea for the “Character” guys on the team to address it too.

by Broncofan on May 10, 2008 9:53 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can't know for sure...

...but I imagine a talk from another player makes a bigger impact than from a coach. I’m sure Shanahan has “talked” to Thomas, but I’m guessing the real impact could come from a “big brother” type that takes Thomas under his wing.

I envision a player that invites Thomas over to meet his family, asks him to join his family or other players for get togethers, and slips Thomas his number and tells him to call before doing anything stupid.

I agree with you that the “character” guys are a good idea.

My Mom always told me, "people know you by the company you keep."

I certainly hope Mr. Thomas’ Mom or some other family members and good friends are telling him the same thing.

And I hope he’s listening.

Actually, agents can be very influential

If I was his agent I would be prepping him for big contracts in the years to come and making sure that he used his free time wisely. If he doesn’t have his degree he should consider working on that during the off season, just as long as he transfers to another school where he won’t be influenced by former associates.

A note on his agent

Marcus Thomas’ agent is a man named Richard Burnoski, who was his high school coach at Mandarin High School in Jacksonville. Marcus also lived with Burnoski at times, while growing up. They have a different type of relationship than those of most players and agents. Burnoski was quoted at the time of the arrest as saying that Marcus needed to stay out of Jacksonville, and have his family come to Denver to see him, because there were a lot of pitfalls in his hometown, old friends and hangers-on who didn’t make it, etc. That’s good advice from a guy who is very new at the agent business.

Wow!

I didn’t know anything about Burnoski until your comment. It sounds like he might be able to work with the Broncos to keep Thomas in Colorado and away from bad influences. I wonder if he has any other clients? It sounds kind of like his “agent career” is based on his former player alone.

I don't recall the site...

...but I read a few days ago that authorities in “Colorado” dropped charges. It was just in the title, and I didn’t bother reading the story (since the reporter or editor was too lazy to even get the information right in the title). I should have focused on it and brought it here for other peole to mock. The mainstream sports media (and news media in general) can just be atrocious at times. I used to have a mental list of about six or seven sites I went to for Broncos news and articles. No more. I get everything from MHR.

Rarely I’ll go to another site to read something about football, and check on Denver while I’m there. But I haven’t found anything in months that hasn’t already been reported by MHR. We also go beyond the story with good analysis, and have great conversations in the comments threads.

It’s amazing that in all of the time I’ve been here, I STILL find myself awed by how great the site is. And it just keeps getting better!

Richard Burnoski

I don’t know of any other clients he has. I lived in Jacksonville from 1996-2002 while he was the coach at Mandarin, and several NFL players came from there. Sam Cowart (LB from Florida State) and Fred Weary (CB from Florida) also played there and went on to play in the NFL, but neither is active today. Jacksonville has a county-wide school system (since the city is incorporated with the county,) and students from all over the city can apply to attend schools which aren’t their local school.

Mandarin High is in the most affluent area of the city, and Marcus Thomas is not from there. His relationship with Burnoski was a key factor in his growth as a player and person, and Burnoski was known to keep close contact with him while he was at Florida. Jacksonville is a tremendously fertile area for college football recruiting, but a lot of talented kids end up not making it to the NFL, like Miami or Dallas or Chicago, or any other hotbed. Marcus made it, and has a good chance of having long-term success like Brian Dawkins, Lito Sheppard, Laveranues Coles, Leon Washington, Jabar Gaffney, Rashean Mathis, and a lot of others. The case of Coles is especially interesting, because he was known around Jacksonville as Trouble Coles, and now he is a respected team leader for the Jets.

With guidance from his mentor and agent, who seems like a good guy, we should have high hopes for the continued maturation of Marcus Thomas, and his continued development into the dominant player he can absolutely become.

Thanks for the follow up Ted.

It sounds like Burnoski might be the key.

If Thomas can stay out of trouble, we may have a real sleeper on our hands. While Thomas held his own last year, I don’t think he was special (but it WAS his first year, he DID have to go through a midseason scheme adjustment, and he WAS surrounded by big name-big talent-big failure cry babies on the DL. But more than a few experts that I’ve read really believe that he will develop into something very special. If he can (and that addresses our biggest weak spot on the team), we are in for some good times as a team.

I don’t know what his future holds, but I think a lot more of Denver’s future as a defensive unit depends on this one young man’s development.

I've said this before

I will say it again:

Thomas is one of the best DTs to come out of the draft in the last five years. The game will come to him, all he has to do is make sure he is still playing day in and day out, and not sitting in the coaches doghouse or in jail for stupid off-field stuff.

And on top of everything it should be mentioned that Thomas is a great teammate. We will never have to worry about a Shaun Rogers-ish type of attitude with Thomas.

He is going to be a joy to break down in game tape, once he starts getting a defense and the coache’s confidence under his belt. The biggest thing I think he will add? More sacks and pressures from the outside, since he should be scary good pressuring the middle of the pocket. Unlike last year, QBs won’t be able to step up at will to avoid DOOM.

Mountains, forest, sea: these render man fierce, but yet do not destroy the man.

I'm really high on Thomas

It’s easy to forget last year’s picks in the excitement over this year’s, but I thought he played pretty well considering the jump in competitive level plus him being off almost a whole year. He’s enormously talented and I can’t wait to see how much he improves over his rookie year. I think he’s is going to be a key building block of our d-line, a guy who can stop the run and rush the passer. He’ll keep the QB from stepping up, as you point out, thus making our outside rush even more potent.

Styg / Spock.

I’m really guilty of failure to pay closer attention here.

But do you think we’ve held back somewhat in FA and the draft for DT because Slowik and Co think that Thomas is more ready to launch to the next level than some of had been thinking? Or do you think too much trust is being placed in DRob? Or is Powell more than many of us expected?

Good questions all

Styg and Guru probably know better than I, but I suspect the coaches have confidence in both Thomas and D-Rob, that they’re a foundation we can build upon. I think the Broncos were persistent but disciplined in FA, unwilling to give up too much and succeeding. If D-Rob’s willingness to compromise on salary helped make it happen, it might be that he saw, or that Denver helped him see, what a perfect fit Denver would be for him. If we hadn’t gotten him I think we’d have gone for a DT in the second round. So I think they felt enough urgency to want to get a DT in FA or early in the draft, but not both, and that their satisfaction with Thomas’ development had something to do with that. Styg has convinced me that Powell has tremendous upside, but if he was available in the fifth round that probably means most teams, including the Broncos, don’t think he can step right in. Nor will he need to. By getting a steal with Thomas last year, and with D-Rob this year, we’ve given ourselves the luxury of not having to throw Powell into the fray before he’s ready.

Since he’s been productive despite his knee, I don’t think D-Rob’s that much more likely to go down than anyone else on the team. I’d like to have more depth there, in case someone does get hurt, but building a foundation and creating depth would have been too much to ask when we had other priorities to attend to. Drafting protection for Cutler in the first round, and a kick returner and wide receiver depth in the second, suggests that Shanny and Slowik were indeed more confident in Thomas and D-Rob than we realized.
