Workouts: Jamie Winborn
Check it out this interview with Jamie Winborn where he talks about what his goals are this coming year. He seems like a hard worker and a team player. I think the Broncos will keep him for depth and special teams.

You know,
he sounds a lot like Keith Burns. I hope he follows in Burns footsteps. I know it’s not as glamorizing as being a starting LB, but we need a guy like Winborn to step in and become a ST captain. Just my humble opinion.

Yeah...
...and with his work ethic that may be the case. What do you think…will the special teams, offense or defense show the biggest improvements this coming year?

I think we've quietly built a powerful defense.
Definitely Top 10 by 2009…maybe even by the end of this season. ST, Royal is going to rock. And if Shanny can get a little more aggressive in the red zone, our offensive is ready to explode. ESPN’s NFL ranking of 23rd is bullcrap…just like when they predicted Washington would win the Super Bowl a few years back. lol

Seriously...
...I just roll my eyes and shake my head to that crap. 23rd my @$$.
I agree about the agressiveness of the play calling though. Last year there were A LOT of times where I was just shaking my head at the plays that were called. I am very excited about this season…but I was about the same amount of excited last year and it was super rough on Sundays man. Losing stinks.
But I think we see improvements at all positions this year. Last year it seemed the defense was just not playing as hard as they could…and it trickled down to the special teams. I don’t know much about football, although a know A BUNCH more now after being a part of this site, but I do know this… 10-6 AT LEAST this year.

I think last year our defensive guys just didn't but into the Bates' system
And it doesn’t matter how great a scheme or system is, if the players do not buy into it then it will fail 100% of the time.
We will be at least 10-6 this year, if not better. I think our guys will come out energized and anxious to prove how good they are as a unit.

11-5
that should be our record this year, due to an easy schedule. the last few years our schedule has been pretty brutal, but the afc least and the nfc south are about as good as it gets, and most of the tough ones are at home. my only concern is out of the gate we have 3 important division games, and with all the new players and coaches, and injured returning players, we may not have it together early on. but we should have a strong 2nd half, and at least earn a wildcard seed. then, who knows? one thing’s for sure, this team will fight, and i can accept anything after that

I think we sell ourselves short!
Let’s not aim low like the faders. They predict a 7-9 season and call it a success! I say we go 12-4 and win the division baby! ;)

Absolutely..............
I think 11-5 or better. It depends on how our young guys come along as well as where and how the injury bug hits. But when you consider the games we kind of gave away last year (Green Bay and Chicago come to mind) we could have easily been 9-7 or even 10-6. I won’t be ridiculously over optimistic and say we could hit 12-4 or 13-3, but then again we might. LOL Anyway, I’ll quit bein stupid and shutup before I jinx us. LOL

Oh, I guess I am over optimistic. lol
To me over optimistic would be 14-2. lol ;) It is 1996 again, after all.

At this point I think we are around a 9-7 team.
At 9-7 we have a shot at the playoffs, but not the best. If we can muster a 10th win we should get in.
We have good people right now, but we also have to (once again) adjust to a new defensive coordinator, and many of the players are new to each other. This is important. Remember that we had these exact same issues last year, and remember the optimism that we had then.
The coordinator is not “new to the team”, so terminology won’t be a big change. But I do think the scheme will be an adjustment. (Even if it is one some of our vets are familiar with). We have 2 new LBs, one or two new SAFs (depending on what happens), and a new DT. On offense, we have at least one new OL (but a couple of injury potentials could change that number quick), potential new RBs in the depth chart, and a new #2 receiver (so not as much adjustment as on the defense).
I feel great about ‘09 and beyond. I’m also not going to rule out that we do better before then, but I think we need to see how our season starts first.

Winborn
The link goes to the main page of the Bronco site, and I confess that I haven’t read it yet (I will in a few moments).
My thoughts on Winborn are this. I like him, and I think he has potential. He was also in a rough spot last year.
All of our LBs had a rough time, even Williams (who played at an elite level, but still had to adjust to a new position). But Winborn has the tools neccessary to compete. I like his football speed for instance. And now he has starting experience as well. He will do very well on STs. Here’s the catch.
DJ, K2, and Boss are going to start in a 4-3 depth chart. That’s 3 LBs. Winborn is my choice to back up at OLB, especially at WLB. That’s 4. Webster isn’t the best, but he’s not a dud either. He’s solid as a back-up or special teamer. He should be behind Winborn in value, but perhaps get an edge at playing SAM behind Boss. That’s five. Beck is listed as the back-up for MLB (6), and we just drafted Larsen (7), who has such a great work ethic and personal / professional values that Denver passed up other needs to grab him at his position late in the draft.
From JonT’s excellent Fanshot, Goodman say this in an interview about Larsen:
I remember a guy that really got my attention was Spencer Larsen, our 6th round choice out of Arizona, just a great kid, a guy that has his head on right, such a good player who plays with all his might, gives all he has every play. He’s a guy we look at and say “HE is going to make it at his position,” so I’m really excited about him.
All of these guys (and others that will be in camp for LB) aren’t going to be on the defense. (I’m seperating “defense”, meaning starters and back-ups, from STs. Larsen, Beck, Winborn, and Webster may all play STs for all I know). The key in my book for predicting how much of a chance a guy has at starting (far from foolproof, of course) is lookng at the depth chart.
I don’t think much right now of Beck at MLB back-up. I’m also not sure which LB position Denver wants to prepare Larsen for.
Winborn’s competition isn’t with Beck (who is at MLB back-up, and has no outstanding pro info yet). It’s also not with DJ, K2, and Boss (who are pretty much assured of starting). His real competition is with Webster and Larsen.
I think Winborn edges Webster, and this is good for Winborn. But Webster is close in talent, and could creep up on him if he isn’t careful (see Foxworth / Paymah). But Larsen is a wild card. He could come in and blow up the depth chart and be a legit contender for 2nd string (beating either Winborn, Webster, or Beck), come in as a legit back-up (but behind any of the names just mentioned), or be entirely consigned to STs, the practice squad, or worse. At that point, Larsen could still start someday, but the journey would be so much harder.
I like Winborn right where he is, as a solid back-up for OLB. But there’s enough wiggle room with Webster and Larsen for surprises in camp / preseason.

Great insight. I am glad Winborn will be able to stick around
and make a positive character impact on this team.

I would put money
on Winborn being trained as the guy who can come on the field if DJ goes off, so WLB. He is very fast and has good explosion off the snap, so being put in a blitzer’s role where he can stay clean would be ideal.
Out of curiosity, where do you think Winborn would fit into a 3-4 depth chart for our current Broncos?

Me first.
I have a question. When is Victor Hugo going to bring my friend Styg back? I feel like “Frog” with out “Toad”! Hugo’s my favorite, but he’s no Styg!
Winborn would start at either WOLB or one of the ILBs in any of the three systems.
In the ILB position he can blitz with K2 blocking to the QB (a common Bullough idea, even though it doesn’t feature much blitz). This also leaves DJ at WOLB doing what he does best. To stop the run, the players might switch places, since DJ is a better run stopper, and Winborn can still cover the weak zones and weak side blitzes.
The only locks for a position would be K2 at one of the ILBs, and Boss at SOLB.

I enjoy Winborn as a player and person
He is funny most of all. When you listen to some of the thigns he says (you tube him sometime) He would be a great ST captain. He reminds me of Sharpe a bit
