Question:
Why have we not wrapped up any of our younger Stars with new contract extensions? I know that Cutler, Sheff, and Marshall are a little younger. But isn't Dumervil a year ahead. All I'm saying is that it is nice to be proactive in re-signing your players before they are about to become free agents. I lived in San Diego for a few years and they are always proactive in re-signing their players well before they hit free agency. They were successful in maintaining their core players and they also signed those players at bargain values. I would hate to see someone that we drafted just walk away.

This is a concern I haven't heard voiced yet.
Other than Doom, do you see several players that are in danger of being lost in FA in ‘09? How long before the end of the contract do you think a team should re-sign a player?
I didn’t realize that Doom was a threat to walk.

DJ is in the last bit of his contract too

If Dooms contract runs out...
he will become a restricted free agent. (Not that I want this to happen.) According to Article XXIX of the NFLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement:
If Denver offers him $2.2 Million next year, and lose him to another team we would get a 1st Round pick for comensation
If we offered him $2.79 Million next year, and lose him to another team we would get a 1st and a 3rd.
Personally, I hope it never comes to this, but it could be a way for the Broncos to keep the cap in check if he’s asking for more than they’re willing to pay him.

You don't want
to wind up with the young guys sucking after signing those big, long-term contracts. Oh, wait, that’s happened to the Rockies.

another angle is this.....
you could be staring at an uncapped year soon. I would think that they would sign everyone after that matter is settled.

This is probably the main factor
Right now, the team is not going to do any long term deals until they know more about the economic landscape going forward.
Also, I think Denver has had a general policy of not redoing deals until they are in the last year. Taking a quick look at the folks whose contracts expire after this year, there is nobody crucial who needs to be resigned. There are a bunch of vets near the end of their career (Nalen, Lynch, Ekuban), a bunch of guys who need to prove themselves this year (Abdullah, Paymah, Foxworth, McCree) and a bunch of role players/reserves (Webster, M Bell, A Hall, Ramsey, C Sapp, Mustard, Mallard)
After 2009, it will be a bit more of a bloodbath (Here is a diary I wrote about it a couple months ago) but I can’t see Denver doing anything until there is a new labor agreement.

Thanks MattR
This spells it out in language even I can understand. I don’t like that part about 2009 though.

One other thing
I was just listening to Adam Schefter on the NFL Network and he made reminded me of something – if the owners opt out of the last two years of the labor agreement, not only does 2010 become an uncapped year but players will need six years of experience to be unrestricted free agents (instead of the current four) so players like Marshall and Scheffler will not be unrestricted even after their contracts are up in 2009.
Peter King at SI wrote a pretty good article about all the consequences of an uncapped year. (article here)

To Elaborate
I feel as though we have really been burnt on our free agent acquisitions. Not only have they been mistakes, they have been costly mistakes. So I would be happy if we signed the gems that we uncover through the draft and build our team that way. Maybe it is premature for us, but I saw somewhere that between Gates, LT, Merriman, Castillo, Kaeding, etc. the core of San Diego is locked in through something like 2010-2011. Maybe even 2012. I hate the Chargers but I credit their management for recognizing a good team and doing what it takes to create some stability.

I think many teams do this to save on salary cap
My guess is that many of these guys will get contract extensions later this year. Definately BMarsh, Cutler, and Schef. Doom is a threat though…because he is not the “prototypical” DE. Stupid as that sounds…they guy produces and that is all that should matter.
