Know your Refs
Hello:
There is one often overlooked group that can have great impact on the game: The referee.
I decided to gather some information about the 13th man (The Refs). I included links to biographies and pictures of the 2007 referees. A link an article by John Clayton about the prepartation needed before games (About 15 hours). Finally, the salary information is included.

Ed Hochuli article:
Above is Ed Hochuli. He was the subject an article about the preparation work required by referees written by John Clayton. The link to that article is at: John Clayton Article.
The rest of the 2007 referees and their bios can be accesses at: Football Referees
The salary that NFL officials get is:
The National Football League (NFL) pays referees anywhere from $25,000 to $70,000 per season. When you consider that the league plays 16 games and referees are considered part-time employees, you get a better sense of the disparity. But do not feel so bad for them, not only are there only 16 games in the schedule, they also get one-week intervals.

More to be expanded on this subject during the season.
My opinion is that refs should get an increase in pay and full-time status. I have a copy of the NFL Rule Book and just memorizing that thing is a full freaking time job.
The refs have a thankless job.
They are experts in their jobs, get only part time status for being the professionals they are, and are only remembered when they get something wrong. (More often than not, people remember them for getting something wrong, when it wasn’t wrong to begin with.) People that are critical of the refs need to try their job. It isn’t easy.
I have nothing but repect for refs, and never tolerated disrespectful behavior towards them, even from the crowds that attended our games. To me, the disrespect shown towards refs is nothing different than disrespect for other authority figures, be they parents, teachers, the police, etc.
Thanks for this write up Wyoeng. These guys deserve some recognition for the hard work that they do.

I like you HT, but sometimes authority figures need to realize they are wrong.
Case in point:
I knew a cop once who, on vacation, was driving aggressively and being an all around jerk driving like a maniac. Three truckers boxed his car in and forced him off the road. The cop got out and was obviously armed while the truckers all got out with various items such as tire irons. Basically the truckers told the cop they didn’t get a rats ass who he was or what badge he flashed, they were not going to allow him to leave. The cop was forced to be escorted all the way up Interstate 5 towards Sacramento by three truckers rather than bring the attention of his fellow officers to his predicament.
The point of this story, even though it took place 30 years ago, is not to say to disrespect all authority figures, but to point out that authority figures are not always right in their action. If a referee makes a horrible call that costs the game to the other team then I believe anyone is within their right to scream obscenities galore at the guilty ref. It is part of the game, they need to learn to accept that and try not to make that same horrible call again in the future.
Much like a certain cop out there who camped out near a stop sign that had been a yield sign the day before and handed out failure to stop tickets all day long. Sure I am TECHNICALLY in the wrong, but when a person has been driving through that yield sign for YEARS AND YEARS and fails to notice the nice new shiny red sign as he looked both ways while slowing down and not stopping is given a $161 ticket is absurd. Not only that, the car in front and behind me did the same thing but the jerk pulled me over and when I inquired about why me and not the other two he said that I didn’t slow down as much as the other two cars. I wonder how that is possible…wouldn’t I have slammed into the bumper of the car in front of me? Sorry, you hit a nerve on that one HT…it’s hard to respect an authority figure that preys on peoples mental programming. My mind had that route programmed in my brain so heavily that it would have taken me months to get used to the idea of stopping at that new stop sign.
Anyways, I am way off topic. lol Not only that, I am insulting a profession that I am currently studying to become. Soon I will be that jerk cop pulling people over for failing to stop at a shiny new stop sign! lmao
Still, that $161 killed me because it came two days after I had paid for my Bronco-raider tickets on opening day. lol!
Exceptions don't prove the rule.
I’m not advocating blind trust in authority. What I am saying is that many people disrespect authority, be they teachers, cops, parents, or refs. And they do it without consideration for the work that goes into the position. If I said something nice about Mothers’ day, I’m sure someone could write something critical about an abusive mother somewhere. But I think my point is still valid. I’ve seen many refs mistreated by fans, coaches, and players. I haven’t ever seen a ref purposefuly mistreat a team.

I say beat 'em like Vick beats his dogs.
Refs only deserve our love and admiration when they make a bad call in our teams favor! ;) It’s the nature of the game buddy. lol
As for the coppers, I paid my ticket didn’t I? I can only take the ticket class once every 18 months and even though I haven’t gotten a ticket since 1996, you never know and a simple moving violation like this one will only slightly affect my insurance rates and I don’t want to take the class and screw myself over by getting a speeding ticket a few months from now. lol 1996-2008, that’s not a bad streak if I do say so myself.
Although my wife throws in my face how she has never gotten a ticket. Whatever, I am still a better driver than her. ;)
Exactly HT...............
I serve as a town recreation board member in our small community and people need to be understanding that referees are human beings too. I have reffed many games over the years and it is not easy at the peewee level, let alone in the pro leagues. Now I do think the guys who do pro games should be the very best in the business and they should do everything humanly possible to remain sharp at their job. That being said, they are human and will make mistakes, so fans should take that into account. I don’t advocate yelling and being disrespectful to a ref unless he proves he deserves otherwise by being disrespectful to me. As a coach I have gotten after ref’s many times it is part of the game. In our league all of us coaches know who you can get a call from and who you can’t. We all know that if you say something to this ref you might get the call or at least get him/her to watch for it, on the other hand, there are a couple ref’s that you might as well keep your mouth shut or they will start punishing your team. It’s all part of the game, I don’t mind heckling ref’s as long as it is done with a little taste, however when it becomes hatred and venom, it has gone too far. I always say that I need them to keep it as safe as possible and as even as possible. At our level, we get some pretty bad refs sometimes, as long as they try for safety and to call an unbiased game I usually don’t gripe too much.
The player who thinks he can and the player who knows he can are two different players, which one are you???
Oh come on, I cannot allow myself to become a latte drinking
“cheerio” kind of gentleman. I enjoy getting down into the gutter every now and then, especially when my emotions are out of control.
Broncofan and HT are probably highly disciplined people with amazing control of their emotions. I easily succomb to emotional outbursts and uncontrollable rage over refs screwing over the Broncos. lol
Really, how interesting would a game be if people like me weren’t at the game? It would be quiet, reserved, and respectful of all things. I’m not saying it would be boring, but we need you guys to keep guys like me from getting arrested or to help subdue me so authorities can make the arrest. lol
I guess my point is, that you may not like when people get out of control and flip out on refs and disrespect them for making a bad call…but you NEED us to voice opinions you already think and feel but are too respectful to yell it outloud. And people like me NEED people like you to keep me from crossing a line. And if necessary, subdue my ass so security can haul my butt off to the dry docks for a little sobering up and a hefty fine.
PS I am not trying to be rude or insult anyone, just trying to make a point with wild exaggerations and pointless references while trying to come off as hilariously funny. No doubt I failed on all accounts, but just picture a crazy man shouting obscenities at the television while sitting on the couch drinking beer and avoiding eye contact with his angry wife who didn’t like the fact that I yelled the obscenities in the first place. Then picture him saying, “But the GD referee just CHEATED to help the other team WIN! It’s not my fault D*it!!!” Then picture the guy getting his own beer and snacks for the rest of the game as his wife takes his daughter out for a while. lol It only happens once or twice a year, but refs only cheat the Broncos once or twice a year. ;)
Whew…my fingers are tired.
Just to let you know............
I have been that guy when forced to deal with idiotic, extremely stupid, and ignorant ref’s. Never said I was the picture of restraint. LOL Most of the time I am, but I have gotten a technical or two in my short coaching career.
The player who thinks he can and the player who knows he can are two different players, which one are you???
I would never be a candidate for coaching...
but then again I am very mild mannered and docile in other aspects of my life…I only seem to get crazy when it comes to Denver Broncos football. You know…. Ancient Mayans used to slaughter the losing teams in their ball games…I think I am still somewhat civilized in the grand scheme of things. ;)
Deep psychological issues.
For some reason this siter seems to touch some of our deepest issues. We have Zappa with authority figures and kwool79 with Bill Williamson. I don’t know, we may have to install a couch.

most of them are lawyers! LOL

Thanks FirstFan and HoosierTeacher
Thanks for your kind words. It was my first post adding a picture.
HoosierTeacher, I read your article about how to post a picture. It worked well. Is there a way to add a picture from a local PC (C:\picture.jpg etc.)? The URL address method seemed to only work with online pictures. If the current method is unable to handle local pictures can that functionality be added at some future date?
Keep Smiling,

I'm glad the Tech Tips helped!
...And the picture was a great addition to your post too.
To get a jpeg onto the site, it must first appear somewhere online. It can’t go straight from your pc. The item about photobucket.com in the article solves the problem. It’s free, and all I use it for is transfering my diagrams to the site (then to MHR), or transfering non-jpeg pictures to my pc, then switching them to jpeg, then to the site, then to MHR.
Try the photobucket method, and let me know if it does or doesn’t work.
Good luck, and great job!
