Bill Williamson Just Doesn't Get It -- Browns Interested In Foxworth?

The Browns have already traded two of their picks in 2009. The Broncos aren't just going to give Foxworth away....Leave it to Billy Boy...

ESPN speculation technique

Apparently Bill Williamson is a quick study, and has learned a vital ESPN technique. He knows a little bit about the Broncos, and that they have good CB depth, and he heard that Daven Holly got hurt. From those two pieces of information, he imagines that Cleveland might want Foxworth, he writes a post on Hashmarks, and now Tony Grossi or Mary Kay Cabot will use him as a source in tomorrow’s Plain Dealer here in Cleveland, calling a deal imminent, because Bill Williamson imagined it to be so.

The Broncos can’t get what Domonique is worth to them at the tender amount he signed for. Cheap, quality depth is a very valuable thing, and it would take a 2nd rounder for me to part with him, which nobody is going to pay. The Broncos probably can’t pay him after this season, but if he walks as a free agent, so be it. You probably get a compensatory 3rd or 4th round pick for losing him, which is a great deal.

Well, looks like he might've missed on that one.

Browns turn to Cousin for some much needed secondary support.

For shame!

In the photo caption they say that Foxworth is stretching alongside Dre Bly… but the CB in the picture is MUCH less goofy-looking and wears #24.

Ah, my apologies for that. As I told John via email, I’m not quite sure how I made that mistake considering I was basically typing the caption verbatim from Yahoo…

Great response

People are always wanting to package Foxy. Sometimes I think I’m the only one who’d really, really, really like to keep him. He likes being here, he’s a team-oriented, high-character guy, he really lays it out on the field, and he wants to be here and seems willing to work, relatively speaking, for peanuts for the privilege. Did he really run a 4.22? Zounds! I had this image of Darrent being faster, more talented, and flashier, and Foxy being his less talented but savvy sidekick. But 4.22?! Not to be mercenary, but as long as Foxy gives
us solid depth or – who knows? – even better, and is willing to take less than he might get elsewhere just because he likes being here,
i think we should indulge him. We might find that he’s just as reasonable, and affordable, when he becomes a free agent. As for Williamson, I don’t miss his b.s. one bit. 4.22? Really?

Great response Guru

By the by it looks like our WR corp has the potential to sneak up on people next year. I am really hoping we cull at least 2 -3 competitors out of htat group without getting too banged up…

Do they have any more DTs we can take? Otherwise, I think a 2nd rounder would be kind of nice.

You know

Williamson was behind a lot of the Foxy trade talk before the draft and BAM~ Foxy is still a Bronco. I don’t even read anything from him anymore. It’s like using crap to brush your teeth, I just don’t see the point!

Until Terrell Davis makes it into the Hall of Fame, I refuse to acknowledge the existence of such a place other than the Ring of Fame at Mile High!

You're not the only one

Spock your not the only one. I really think Fox is going to be a great player for us for the future. He is a great influence off the field and that seems to be harder and harder to find. You can just tell he loves playing in Denver. Some things just aren’t worth trading.

by ThorpeBroncosfan on May 23, 2008 1:48 AM MDT   0 recs

Fox may be a critical piece in the future.

While Fox and Pay have contracts coming due soon, don’t forget the frightening prospect of Bailey and Bly coming up soon thereafter. Perhaps Bailey won’t ask for too much, wanting to stay with brother Boss. But if Denver fears losing our top CBs, Fox may get an extension.

On a lighter note...

While at the Dawgs site I saw a fanpost about Elway vs Kosar. I decided to read it, thinking there was some hidden statistic about why Bernie might be better than John. Instead, I saw a brief story about John’s AFL team playing Bernie’s AFL team. It was a chance at REVENGE! (John won again).

: )

Hall of Fame vs. Hall of Very Good

People here in Cleveland are just convinced that Bernie Kosar was a great player. Really, he was merely a good player in an era with lots of great QBs (Elway, Montana, Marino, Jim Kelly, Warren Moon, Steve Young) and some more good ones who were better than Bernie (Esiason, Simms, Randall Cunningham.)

Bernie does color commentary for Browns pre-season games now, and he always sounds like he chain-smoked two cartons of non-filter cigarettes and drank a big bottle of Jim Beam directly before coming on the air. It’s really difficult to listen to, and even though his analysis is typically solid, he would never be put on TV anywhere but here.

As a fan base, I don’t think we have anybody like Bernie. By that, I mean a pretty good player who we all mistakenly believe was a great player. I objectively consider Rod Smith to be a Hall of Very Good player rather than a Hall of Famer, but I wouldn’t even put Bernie in the Hall of Very Good. (As a side note, Jerome Bettis will definitely make the Hall of Fame without ever being a truly great player, because of his deft touch with the media. He is like Rod, really good without ever being truly great.)

Can anybody think of a player we all overrate as a fan base? Here is my list of Hall of Fame and Hall of Very Good, for discussion purposes.

HOF
John Elway
Terrell Davis
Shannon Sharpe
Gary Zimmerman
Randy Gradishar
Tombstone Jackson
Tom Nalen
John Lynch
Champ Bailey
Jason Elam

HOVG
Rod Smith
Steve Atwater
Karl Mecklenburg
Bill Romanowski
Al Wilson
Simon Fletcher
Neil Smith

Am I missing anybody? This is an interesting topic to me, since Zimmerman is about to be only our second HOFer. What do you think?

My take

First off I have to add Rod Smith. He has the most catches by and UNDRAFTED player in the history of the NFL. Based on that fact alone (1994 he was on the practice squad) he is a HOFer. I would add Dennis Smith to your HOVG and take off Romo. I dont like him, i tolerated him while he was a Bronco. Plus he went to oakland so he is dead to me. I also would take off Neil Smith, he is more a KC Chef than a true Bronco. Add Rulon Jones and Al Williams. Also Louis Wright, Bernard Jackson, Rubin Carter, Steve Foley, and even Mike Harden

What did I tell you all about Bill "Porkchop" Williamson?

All of his stories are pure fabricated conjecture and not based on any factual evidence. I guess his jelly doughnut dependency has him stooping to writing false stories to support his habit.

This is a sad day for our friend Porkchop.

he is the reason

i quit reading the Denver Post online, him and those idiot commentor. It made me feel like I was on ESPN.com. Man, never have I seen so many fire Shanny posts after a 7-9 season. Man its aggravating the ignorance there. But not surprising. Thats why I love this blog. Its DA BOMB!!

foxy

with all the talk of character this offseason, i can’t believe foxworth is the first guy mentioned in every trade rumor. in fact, i don’t know where the idea of paymah surpassing him in ability ever came from. i don’t like paymah. just don’t. i think foxy will beat him out in camp, being able to concentrate on being a corner now. he is a building block for a team that sorely needs them right now, and my gut feeling is that bly won’t be with us much longer. i like him, but i don’t think he is playing up to his contract just yet. if he plays well this season, and doesn’t want to break the bank, then great. if not, keep bailey, foxy, and williams/’09 draft pick and we’ll be just fine at corner. if paymah wants to start next season(ala herndon), then cut him loose

by davecheffy on May 25, 2008 4:12 PM MDT   0 recs

Dave

I started as a much bigger fan of Fox, but it did seem to me that Pay passed him up as a solid nickel in ‘07. Fox may have better upside, but I feel he’s been wasted to much bouncing between SAF and CB. Either way, I like the idea of keeping both players for depth our as future starters. Given our depth (and we can add Jack Williams now too) it wouldn’t be unreasonable to trade a quality CB for something tangible though.

Still, in a couple of years we will have contract issues with keeping both Champ and Bly at about the same time. I’m hoping that bringing in Champ’s brother makes the contract negotiations a little easier. Then, right after those signings, we have to worry about Fox and Pay at about the same time too. I love having quality in depth at CB, but since we haven’t staggered our signings (no one expected the tragedy of D-Will, and bringing in Bly was the right thing to do), we face some difficulty here.

Perhaps bringing in true SAFs was part of the answer, freeing up our CBs to be CBs.

I would

have Foxworth, and Paymah compete with Bly. I am not a Bly fan and still can believe he was beaten as bad as he was against GB. Heck he almost cost the Broncos the oakland game in Denver. IMO the Broncos would be better off without Bly. Then again I could be sooooo wrong on that

by broncfanstuckinsd on May 27, 2008 2:29 PM MDT   0 recs

It may just be me...

...but I’m a big fan of Bly’s. He has a large stretch of years where he is second only to Bailey in INTs. Both Bly and Bailey got burned against GB. In my opinion, a large part of the problem is that neither player can count on the SAFs to give them the deep zone protection they need to go all out. Particularly in Bly’s case (he is a gambler), his style is cramped in a system with only one SAF deep.

Keep in mind also that Bailey shuts down his side of the field, and Bly gets more thrown his way than normal. I’ll go back to my “HT Law of CB Credit”, which says: CB’s get noticed more for the plays they don’t make, than the numerous plays they prevent.

In other words, Bailey shuts down his side of the field so much, that he doesn’t get the credit for the sacks he causes (by taking a receiver away from the QB), and doesn’t get credit for the balls that QBs throw away, or try to fit in to a tight spot elsewhere on the field that get incompletes. But we are sure quick to notice the rare times he gets burned. The same goes for Bly. The best plays that CBs make (short of an INT) are the ones that we never see.

It’s just my opinion, but I seem to see Bly making a lot of contributions. It was the run that killed Denver last year, not so much the pass game. But either way, in the Shanahan approach, every position is up for grabs. If Fox or Pay deserve the nod, Bly won’t start at #2.

by hoosierteacher on May 27, 2008 3:27 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Last year

was just a bad season all around. maybe I still see Bly how he was as a Ram. I dont think he is top 10 but I do think along with Champ they do make a formidable pair. I guess I just dont like the way IMO he gambles. It makes me uncomfortable. I probably am off base on my assement of him.

by broncfanstuckinsd on May 27, 2008 4:27 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Bly was in DET...

...where he played zone. There he had the SAFs covering his gambling, but he was limited in where he could go. In my opinion, Bly is better suited for Denver’s man system in pass defense, but he should have the benefit of knowing that his back is covered so he can commit quicker.

by hoosierteacher on May 27, 2008 6:18 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm with you HT

And I believe that the play in OT against GB wasn’t Bly’s fault. (I’ll double check later tonight.) If I remember correctly, Lynch normally would have the deep zone coverage that is responsible for allowing the corner to risk jumping the route, (which amounts to a fraction of a second in terms of the play). However, Lynch wasn’t in on that play, Curome Cox was. We see Bly because the camerawork will show us the underneath, but Cox SHOULD have been in the picture on that play, and he was the guy that I feel got burned. I was not surprised at all to see him get cut a few weeks later.

And I don’t know if it is the same play you (BFSISD) are talking about, but in the raiders game there was a play where both Blya nd Lynch read it wrong, and though both players recovered quickly and got in on the play, they were a fraction of a second too late and it was a TD. Over he course of the season, there were very, very few of those types of moments. As HT says, we were at a lot of teams mercy because we couldn’t stop the run, and in hindsight I thought our DBs, without exception (ok, except for Cox), played stellar, given the hole they were in all the time.

I guess

I have always been down on Bly, maybe I am being a little to harsh on the guy. I want the secondary to kick ass this year. I just am skeptical on Bly. But I am a Bronco fan so I do want whomever is the #2CB to kick much booty this year and return the Broncos to the promised land

by broncfanstuckinsd on May 27, 2008 7:14 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I was harsh on him too, but Bailey wasn't all that great last year either...

they both were sort of average in my opinion. I’m looking for a big year from both of them!!

Bly is still a top 10 CB

Dre is just outside of Pro Bowl caliber, but he’s still excellent in man coverage. Champ also got beat in that Green Bay game, if you recall. Brett Favre made two perfect throws, and perfect throws beat solid coverage. Dre can also catch, which is a skill many CBs lack nowadays.

Just my opinion, but Dre is worth the money.
