Winds of Change

This FanPost has no factual content.  There are no statistics, no tables, no analysis (although, I am a huge fan of all of the above!)  No, this post is about a difficult-to-describe event: Shivers down the Spine.

See, I've been getting them recently, and with greater frequency.  I don't know what, precisely, happens when I get that feeling.  Something with the brain and central nervous system, I'm sure...but I'm a Software Engineer/Math Geek, not a doctor.

(If anyone knows WHY you get shivers down your spine, or hiccups for that matter, let me know!)

But these shivers...they keep happening.  They happened when I looked at the sum of Denver's 2008 Draft (both in talent and character.)  They happened when I realized Jay Cutler was a Top 10 QB in 2007...with untreated diabetes.  Then again when I see quotes like (paraphrasing) "his blood sugar is down, his spirits are up, and his fastball is back."  They came when Brandon Marshall "mocked" Cutlers comments, with Jay not missing a beat in making a come-back (term used on purpose.)  It happened again when Champ sounded impressed by Jay's recovery, and again when Stokley and Jackson sounded impressed.  Again, when Shanahan promised Rosalind Williams that Denver would "make her proud" this season.

Fellow Broncos fans...the winds of change are blowing.  Nothing flashy, but Denver is getting back on track.  The team is coming together.  And most importantly: Ladies and Gentleman, I am pleased to present Jay Cutler's Denver Broncos.

And there go the shivers again.  :o)

Are they the same type of shivers you no doubt get whenever you

catch a replay of Super Bowl 32 on NFL Network? :)

My wife makes fun of me

because I still get teary-eyed everytime I see replays of Elway’s leap or him hoisting the trophy.

Hmmm...

They are, in fact, very similar! I happen to enjoy them…much the same way I’m enjoying Odell’s IPA right now. It’s a great night!

i got chills, they're multiplying...

could it be, that way in the back of your subconcious mind, you remember the mourning, the suffering, the confusion, the embarassment that conspired to be our ‘07 season? and now, now that the storm has cleared, and the winds of change have blown away the remaining debris, you anticipate the hellfire this team is about to unleash, spitting out venom like bad chewing tobacco in al davis’ wrinkled face on 09/08/08? no, just me?

Try this for shivers....
It is a walking, standing up touchdown. Can you say the Broncos are in the LEAD!

OR

Oh boy, Are you kidding me? The Broncos are gonna win this thing!!

No doubt.

Can you still hear the voice inflections in your head when you read this?

I sure can.

I can recall exactly where I was sitting in my living room. I lived just two miles from The Murph that year and I could see the stadium from my third story balcony of the condo I lived in. The fireworks…everything. It’s a day I’ll never forget.

You said it

I got shivers just reading about your shivers. This season could be the beginning of something very special for years to come. Now, if we could just knock phylis off his high horse. The horse being his merry men, because everyone knows that they have carried him. Here’s to our “QUEST” and a another round to the destruction of the over-rated chargettes. CHEERS!!!

Do you get those shivers every year?

I am usually optimistic about the Broncos chances but this year I think my optimism is more valid than in the past. My biggest concern is the run defense. If they turn that around the sky is the limit next year.

I'm glad someone finally wrote this.

I know I’ve posted previously how excited I am for this season. I see the depth charts people are analyzing and get all excited. Part of me thinks it’s just because of the number of game we’re going to this year and I’ve never seen back-to-back Broncos games in person. Then, I look at guys like Carlton Powell and Peyton Hillis – guys that shouldn’t contribute in their first year and wonder, what if? I wasn’t really excited about any single FA pick-up, except K2, but together, they look very solid. I was starting to think something was wrong with me, so I’m glad I’m reading other comments.

SOme thoughts on shivers.

1. Just read a “Frog and Toad” story to my daughter. (Mrs. HT and I waited forever to have a child). In one of the stories, “the shivers” are described as being afraid. I don’t know what that has to do with anything, but as a former teacher I just love “Frog and Toad”.

2. Hicups are caused by an electro stimulus of the diaphragm, which is the muscle below the lungs which is responsible for making the lungs expand and contract. The most recent piece I read on hicups (not that I read about it a lot) is that a shock to the system (mostly the throat, like a cold drink or too much food in a short time) causes this, and in emergencies (hicups can be fatal in very rare cases) the treatment is the application of a cold stimulus to the back of the throat.

3. Regarding football and shivers (what we’re really talking about here), I don’t get them. I do get teary eyed though. lol

Hicups.

I avoid hicups by liberal application of the aforementioned cold stimulus to the back of the throat. There is a product manufactured by the Adolph Coors Co. that seems to do the trick.

There is something different this year. And it is good.

Exactly firstfan..............

I don’t know what it is really, but it feels different than previous years, it feels like when Shanny first got here and started signing ppl we never heard of to complement the studs. What excites me even more now is that other than a couple, our studs are younger. Also, it seems that, early on in his coaching career, Shanny was adept at finding high character guys you never heard of to come in and make a huge impact. Seems we are going home in that area. I can’t explain it, but I am more stoked for this season than any other since the last Super Bowl. I’ve been stoked before, but this feels “REAL” there most definitely is something different, and I like it.

The player who thinks he can and the player who knows he can are two different players, which one are you???

by Broncofan on Jun 2, 2008 11:36 AM MDT up reply actions

I feel it too.

But I’ve got to be honest. I feel it every summer. That’s why I don’t always trust my gut on this.

Still, I can’t remember this kind of deepth and character since…

...dare I say it?

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!
