I need advice.
Ok, here is my dilemma. I have tickets to the Raider-Bronco game on opening day, but everyone I've talked too seems to think I would be nuts to wear my lucky Elway jersey to the game.
Does any Bronco fan here have any experience at all going to a Raider-Bronco game in Oakland? Would it be smart for me to wear nondescript clothing? lol F-ing fader fans...can't even let other people enjoy a game. It wouldn't bother me as much if I knew any potential fight would be fair...of course it wouldn't.
I might just have to say F it and wear it anyway...I paid the arm and leg to be there God nabbit! Ah screw it...you only live once right? I'll just have to make sure my brother brings his XD and CCW Permit just in case those convicts make a prison shank out of a plastic coffee lid. ;)
I just want to have fun with my brother and enjoy the experience...but all these comments online and in RL have started to make me a bit paranoid and its pissing me off. So if anyone has any thoughts I would appreciate it.

Or perhaps I should just wear a clear plastic bag over my entire body...

Zappa i know what you mean
I grew up a die hard bronco fan in Manteca, CA an hour away from oakland…i too might be attending that oppening night game….
My dad never let me wear any broncos gear going to the broncos games against the raiders in Oakland for safety reasons lol….damn jail birds out there….
I remember my dad taking me to a monday night game in which terrell davis my fav player alive was coming back from injury and played about fifteen snaps…. but my paps would not let me wear any bronco gear and it sucked dearly…but there was a man sitting by us in a broncos retro elway jersey who got escorted by the police to leave the stadium because he was about to get murdered….lol.
The last time i went to a game was in 2006 on a rainy sunday in which the Broncos destroyed Oakland 31-3…it was awesome because my whole family, brothers, cousing, aunts, uncles, grandparents were there and i got to cheer very quietly though hiding my TD jersey under my plain grey sweatshirt…..I decided to take it off after the game to show off my jersey and got heckled a bit and a couple of peanuts thrown at me lol….and quarters….so my dad made me put it back on….lol not to mention my uncle brad was so drunk he fell coming down the stairs and rolled down them haha…what a day that was…
But if you where your jersey and i do go to the game in oakland i will rep mine as well so we can go down together lol

Crap. What a bunch of douche bags...
I guess I’ll have to settle for wearing my gear under a sweater. I guess you old timers a right when you say fader fans are scum of the Earth. Zero class.
My only experience at football games come from San Diego…I only got one heckle(“F-ing Bronco fans”), said only under the dudes breathe because he was outnumbered 100-1 in a sell out San Diego crowd that brought the Broncos a California style “Sea of Orange”. THAT was fun.
Besides, I don’t want to chance having my little brother get his permit taken away because he’s forced to shoot a couple idiots in the kneecap while they are jumping my bones. Ah well…I’ll have to make sure to be an a-hole to any Raiders fans in Mile High when I finally make it out there. I’ll say it again, what a bunch of douche bags. :(

It would take alot of courage for you
to open openly sport your denver gear. The only way you would be halfway safe is if you went with a few raiders fans. Raiders security basically lets the fans do what they want to so you will surely be a target. I would def go but hide that jersey Zap

Oh well, I guess I was just used to growing up around fader fans
that were basically my friends and we just joked around alot. Even I need to be reminded that the typical fader fan is basically a thug with no class.
Thanks for the info, and it looks like I’ll have to play it low key…I’ll still wear my jersey under a sweater…and who knows, I might just get enough beer in me to get myself into trouble. :)

I guess I was being a bit naive now that I think about it...
I mean really…how would I feel if my team sucked butt for years on end and then have to watch fans of a better team come in to defile your home stadium while those fans get to enjoy the whooping of the home team. I wouldn’t be too fond of opposing fans in my backyard either. ;)
So I will quietly root for my team…probably the smartest thing to do behind enemy lines. Besides, I’ll still have my brother with me to talk smack with.
Reminds me of the other Bronco game I went too back in ‘98. I saw one Charger fan and he muttered(quietly) to himself about those “f-ing” Bronco fans. He kept quiet though since he was outnumbered 100-1 and a San Diego style “Sea of Orange” gave the visiting team an edge over their pathetic division rivals. That is my greatest memory…which is also why I have no respect for Charger “fans”.
I suppose that is also why I should show a small measure of respect to the fader nation, since at least they can fill a stadium even when their team sucks…unlike the Charger fans who are as loyal to their team as Bill is to Hillary.
Thanks again for the responses…I needed to hear the honest truth and I’ll still figure out a way to have a blast. Rest assured, I will let those around me know that I am a Bronco fan…I just won’t be a loud mouthed arrogant dikwheat about it.
If anyone is going to be at the game, email me…we’ll probably be getting to the stadium early too.

I used to work in San Francisco and had to travel across the bridge quite a bit. One time I stopped for GAS in oakland with the Bronco hat in the back of my car forgetting it as there and my back door window got smashed and the hat got burned. I left the car to go use the restroom (3 min max) I saw the cap on the groun by the station burrning (smart guys in oakland there) I dunno about a game but I dfinately am glad I dont have a bronco sticker on the car!

It's unfortunate that they have such a low class fan base.
Skip the jersey; period. (Forget the “under the sweatshirt” kind of stuff too). The idea is to enjoy the game. There is no gain in wearing it.
Look at the raider’s site by the way. Saint is a good guy, and really does his best. But outside of his posts, how much quality do you see? The technology is killing them! Even before my Tech Help posts, many folks knew how to use the different tools (recommends, avatars, HTML, etc). Last time I was there: no recommends, hardly any comments on any stories and posts.
Saint deserves a lot better. But when the fan base can barely read and write, let alone use a computer…

Ok... this is insane!
I’ve never attended aa live NFL-game (obviously), nor have i attended a raider-game. But you allways hear how nice and friendly everyone is at those tailgates: Fans grilling together without paying attention to club-relations. Of course its a bitter rivalry, but come on – even raiderfans can’t be THAT stupid…
I mean I live in Europe where hooliganism is a giant problem – but it has never EVER come as far as to being afraid of wearing your fav. team jersey, even if you have seats among the rival-team-fans…
I’m not living in a fairytale-world – if its dangerous to ware it, that is what that is (Gurism) – but i’m just shocked to hear that!

To me, the basic problem has seemed to be
that the Raiders (and their fans) have a longstanding pride in being the “bad boys” of the NFL. Historically, it’s very common for the Raiders to rack up more penalties in a season than any other team. They traditionally play very close to the limits on a lot of rules. And for a while, the “Black Hole” with all the Halloween fans were a pretty neat gimmick that the fans had going for them. Unfortunately, I think it attracted a lot of goons who used it as an opportunity to push societal rules much like the team pushed game rules. Toss in an owner who, at the very least, never discouraged that kind of behavior, and the whole thing snowballed.
Nearly everything about the Raiders is conceived to fit a rebel image: Silver and Black, Raiders logo, Oakland, edgy play, love of the long bomb (especially when they were first built during the old NFL’s conservative style), nasty attitude, and even an owner who doesn’t always play nice with the other owners. The marketing worked perhaps a little better than the NFL would like. While Chris Berman can really play it up on SportsCenter, the image came at a cost.
Perhaps replacing the Silver with Pink would help. ;)

It's an oakland thing.
I’ve worn a Broncos jersey to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City a few times (one time, the Broncos weren’t even playing!) I some comments and peanuts, but in the end, the people in KC were pretty friendly. As long as I didn’t do anything stupid, they weren’t going to do something stupid.
But I’ve heard horror stories of the oakland fans. That is the one place I would NOT wear an opposing team’s jersey. And to me, that speaks very poorly of raider fans.

Just think
At the quiet satisfaction you will receive when the Broncos beat the Raiders on their home turf. You are a Bronco fan and not a screaming idiot Raider fan or a loser who goes crazy, gets attacked, and gets thrown out of the stadium. I think we have just a little more class than that as Broncos fans. Sure, you can show your fandom, but sometimes you need to hide it, and sometimes hiding it works out (you get to stay for the WHOLE game, AND get much closer to Raiders fans and their reactions haha). It’s like a spy knowing something everyone around him doesn’t. If the Raiders lose everyone around you will be pissed, and I guess that’s one of the only times you’ll enjoy everyone around you being sad…when they’re fans of the opposing team! Have a good time though, I know I will, getting to watch them on national television.

Just do it.
I have been a Raiders fan since I can remember football. I hate Denver, I hate Elway to the core. How many times did he bring them back with only minutes left in a game to beat the Raiders? Us stupid Raiders fans don’t have that many fingers, so I can’t count that high.
I brought a Denver fan with me to the last game (you know the one you lost) and since I wasn’t sitting next to him I told him not to wear orange, but he was fine.
I live in Southern Oregon and just started going to games regularly in the last few years. If you wear that jersey, you will get heckled, you will get peanuts thrown at you and you may get yelled at. If you stay relatively sober and take the crap you will be fine. If you get drunk and start smack talking back to other drunks you will be in a fight before halftime.
I have never been to a monday night game but on sunday the party starts at 8:00 am in the parking lot. If that is the case on monday as well, you will meet a lot of drunk Raiders fans so bite your tongue.
I will be at the RV lot (south east section) and there are a lot of crazy black hole guys there. I have seen them be very cool to opposing fans, taking pictures and having a good time. It’s there 30 seconds of fame. I have never seen a fight in the parking lot and have actually only seen one fight in the stands that wasn’t broke up quick and it was two Raiders fans one row away and ten seats away from me. Nobody wants fights in the stands, we pay way too much for the tickets.
Just do it and have fun…by the way how many Broncos are in the Hall Of Fame? Raiders have 18 (12 franchise players)?

Thank you for the reasoned commentary
It is something that tends to be lacking from the normal raider posts over here (the last troll we had was a raiders fan). We have no problem with well written posts by opposing fans, it’s the slapped together troll style posts that are annoying.
Throwing out the Hall of Fame is a bit mean though. It’s not for lack of good players. I think every one of us here would contend that there are plenty of deserving Broncos that have been overlooked. Scroll back a few posts and you will find a great article on Floyd Little, a player that should most definitely be in the HoF, but was overlooked since he didn’t play in a major media market. There are several players in the same situation, guys who were much better players, and had much better careers, than many members of the HoF, but were not voted in.
My own little jab back – how have you guys done in the playoffs during the last few decades? While neither of us has done great over the last couple years, the Broncos played in the AFC Championship game just a few years ago, and have won two of the last 11 Super Bowls…

You are right about it being mean. I have been going back and forth with Bronco fans all my life and at this point in Raiders history, it’s about all I have. I do cling to the optomism and hate to admit it but laughed outloud at a post over here a few weeks ago about the year in the life of a Raiders fan…off season optimism, thoughts of the playoffs, hope for 8 and 8, post season depression when it doesn’t happen…etc…
I’m looking forward to putting the term “AFC worst” in the toilet. It’s a funner season when all of the AFC West is playing good.

As much as our teams hate each other, its so much better when we both are good, and each game means just that much more. I completely understand your sentiment though, I go to NCSU – our sports teams suck, but in the immortal words of our former coach “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.” You just have to keep your hopes up, they’re your team and you have to support them.

I might talk him into leaving his gun at my house so we can both drink some. If he does that then I will not be getting drunk because I will be driving home. lol

But I would guess that the crazy black hole guys who come to games fully dressed up are not the ones you have to worry about. They are fans and can respect fanaticism from another team. It is the random drunk folks inside the stadium who are more likely to be a problem.

that's right
The black hole guys are cool, I met a few when I tailgated there several years ago with one of my buddies (a raider fan). I’ve been to a few games there both with Bronco and raider fans (1999-2001 when I lived in San Jose). I won’t wear Orange. Too many power drinks who are little men on the inside and feel like they have to prove how tough they are. Most of the fights I’ve seen have been on the 2nd level. Never saw one in the parking lot before the game though.
Right now I’m planning on being at this game too, probably tailgating with my Bronco friend who lives in Fremont, when it gets closer we should post where everyone who is going could all meet up for some beers.

Here's a new metric
I’m a financial analyst, so I like numerical performance indicators. How about Super Bowl Championships per Hall of Famer? I don’t count Tony Dorsett as a Broncos HOFer so that means we have two (Elway and Zimmerman.) Two championships divided by 2 HOFers is 1 championship per Hall of Famer. That’s efficient use of talent there, as efficient as you’ll ever see.
The faders on the other hand, have 3 Super Bowls and evidently 18 Hall of Famers (trusting that guy’s number.) That is .16667 Championships per HOFer. Much less efficient. In fact, one could make an argument that it is woefully, horribly, inefficient. Something to think about.
Oh yeah…. here’s a brain-teaser for you. What team has averaged the most wins since the NFL went to a 16 game schedule in 1978? Ponder that one.

numbers game
You accountants (or finacial analysts) can really move the numbers around. It always impresses me. We could go rounds with numbers but I am afraid I would lose. Not only do I not have enough fingers and toes, but I don’t have enough bars on my prison cell to count the points Denver gave up in the first four super bowls that you made it to…ouch! You guys are going to go nuts over that one. I’ll leave you alone that was below the belt.
Don’t get too sensitive now, actually when I went to NFL.com to find out how many HOF players you have had I was shocked to see how few. Six super bowls is impressive even if the first four sucked. I also included Al in the HOF and honestly I think he bought his way in.

We have a winner
Zappa wins the imaginary prize. The Broncos have averaged the most wins, followed by the Steelers, Dolphins, and 49ers. As far as year-to-year consistency (as measured by the statistic known as coefficient of variation) only the St. Louis/Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals have been as consistent as the Broncos during the last 30 years. Needless to say, our brand of consistency is preferable to theirs :)

On my comments box I see the place where you put your title; under that is six symbols; under that is the space where you type your comment. The quote symbols are the 4th from the left.
If you don’t see them there, try going to your personal settings box. You should have a setting that says either HTML or WYSIWYG. Switch to HTML and see if that helps. See if your comment box has changed.
