Broncos Annouce Appointments To Front Office Personnel

The Denver Broncos on Tuesday announced several appointments to their Football Operations Department, including the naming of Jim Goodman as Vice President of Football Operations / Player Personnel and the hiring of Brian Xanders as Assistant General Manager.

Goodman served as the Broncos’ Director of Player Personnel for the previous two years and has worked in the club’s personnel department for the last 10 seasons. He will oversee the day-to-day football operations of the organization and will continue to manage the Broncos’ overall scouting process. Goodman also coordinates the Broncos’ draft preparations and is involved in the evaluation and acquisition of both pro and college players.

Xanders joins the Broncos after spending the last 14 seasons with Atlanta, where he served as the Falcons’ Director of Football Administration / Player Personnel Analyst during the 2007 season. A former linebacker at Florida State University who owns a master’s degree in business administration from the school, Xanders is responsible for long and short-term strategic planning of the Broncos’ salary cap along with assisting in overall personnel department matters.

He will work directly with Broncos Assistant General Manager Jeff Goodman, who oversees pro personnel and handles contract negotiations along with roster management for the club.

I find the Xanders appointment very interesting.
Although the Falcons are restructuring their front office, they tried to entice Xanders to stay in an increased capacity. Xanders, who had offers from several teams, viewed the position with the Broncos as a most attractive opportunity.

Does this seem like

part of the reasoning behind Sundquist’s firing?

Goodman was given ” Vice President of Football Operations / Player Personnel” which is of course assisting Shanny’s President capacity.

When Sundquist was fired, I seem to remember the statemnet being made that he (Ted) was taking on too many responsibilities. So, while divvying up the responsibilities, Shanahan has also divided up his specific workload, no doubt putting the day to day work under he heading of Vice President.

If the rumors of Shanny and Ted’s incompatability are true, then “Vice President” would have been a title not easily shared by Shanny. I would say that, while he may do more specific work than the GM, Goodman has been promoted a step ahead of a general manager (GM) position in terms of importance to the team. I’m thinking specifically that it is his ideas that are what has been promoted, which is a very strong indication that it is Sundquists ideas which were fired.

And the draft and free agency have been like a breath of fresh air, so….

Mountains, forest, sea: these render man fierce, but yet do not destroy the man.
