Hamilton Tiger-Cats?
Was it really necessary to differentiate Tiger-Cats from, say, Tiger-Dogs, or Tiger-Snails, or Tiger-Platypuses?
Note: in researching this post, I learned that there is no universally-agreed plural for platypus. From Wikipedia:
There is no universally agreed upon plural of “platypus” in the English language. Scientists generally use “platypuses” or simply “platypus”. Colloquially, “platypi” is also used for the plural, although this is pseudo-Latin;[3] the Greek plural would be “platypodes”.

Could be worse
For a while the CFL had the Ottawa Rough Riders and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Talk about unnecessarily confusing.

HT horse tracks, not HT hoosierteacher.
And not to get in trouble here (jvill), but Mike and Pat (Bowlen) are both friends of the Bush family. That someone’s child is getting married (be it a Bush twin or a Clinton child) shouldn’t be an issue for anyone.
I imagine that we come together from around the world (Clause and Jeeens), of all shapes, sizes, politial beliefs, colors, and religions to band together for the Broncos. It’s something we can all agree on and take great pride in.

Much like some of the other signings thisoff season......
Edgerton Hartwell fills a need for the Raiders. He can play SLB, the one LB position the Raiders have not found a star at, and support the run defense. Kirk and Thomas are so good in coverage, that its likely that Edgerton will simply play the rush, and if a pass, rush the passer. Again, this could be a great pick up, or another be that does not pan out. He has had some major injuries in the past, but appears to be healthy, and when healthy, he is an all pro. He recorded more than 200 tackles filling in for an injured Ray Lewis a few years back, so I have confidence that he can fill in at SLB and fill that position of need for the Raiders. If he does not work out, he will be released at no real loss to the Raiders come the start of the season, much like Darious last season.

Correct me if I am wrong..
but I think he has played a total of 13 games (none starting) in the last three years. He was cut by that linebacker factory Cincinnati before the season started last year. He may cost very little in terms of money, but he still occupies one of the rather precious spots on the 80 man roster.

AND lets not forget the cap penaltyif he does get cut!
even a minimal hit is substantial when you are so close to the cap number

Wait, correct me if I'm wrong......
but if a player is not guaranteed any $$$ in a deal, and they are cut before the deadline at or near the start of the season, the a NFL team should not be penalized at all. Please correct this if I am wrong, but the Raiders have made several signings like this, not to mention Lamont Jordans contract pays him ~4mil, none of it is guaranteed, and so a full 4mil should come off the cap when he is released.

MattR is our resident expert
but a signing bonus unless it includes “ifs” “ands” or “buts” usually is guaranteed the player. sometimes they are incentive laden contract such as being on the roster at a certain time or som many TD’s etc. Regardless, there is always a cap hit when you cut a player. beit 5k or 5 mil (i think for us we got hit with 5 mil for cutting javon “needs-a” walker). Teams can divide how they take the hit sometimes but in the end you still get hit. In Jordans case (and I dont claim to be an expert) he is given a base salary per year. Whatever date the team deemed in teh cotract as the start of the year is the date he is given that money. so lets say you guys cut jordan on june 1 and the season started april 1, he gets at least some of the money and the remaining money he hasnt been paid counts against you becasue you still owe him the amount. MattR maybe able to answer better than I, but that is my understanding. So basically you have say a 100 mil salary cap and you take a 1 mil cap hit you only have 99mil to operate.

What if the player is cut during training camp?
Cause thats when it will happen. Lamont will be traded or released during training camp, so he should not receive any salary for 2008.

it reall depends on when the players contract is set up and the dates given
within the contract. I would say that if the guy doesn’t make it out of TC than the team probably has a clause written in. I am far from an expert and actually only making an educated guess. My thought is however, if you have pulled a guy off the market for a while he is entitled to fair compensation. If you want to take a look at what MattR has put together here it is as you can see there even Gerrard Warren counts against us, and he’s been away for a while now.

How can Gerrard Warren still count against your cap,
if he was traded? I could understand if he was released, but traded? How does that work?

Speaking of Lamont, you were righ about the cap hit.....
“The fact is, Jordan’s time in Oakland appears limited. He is due $4.7 million next season. One team source expects Jordan to be released after June 1, which allows the team to spread his cap figure over two seasons.”

However, I still don’t understand how Gerard Warrens contract still counts against your cap if you traded him.

he counts against our cap
because he was owed a bonus. oakland did not absorb the bonus. Denver was responsible for the bonus and oakland for the salary. we spread it over few years which is what you guys are choosing to do with Jordan.

TY for the info......
I will never truly understand the complexities of this crazy cap system, and I don’t think anyone really does.

I don't claim ....
to know all of the intracacies of the salary cap. My simple brain does much better with the total of 80 players. Virtually every NFL Team is at the 80 player max right now. In order to sign someone, somone else must be cut. There are fans in Denver now clammoring for the Broncos to sign Sean Alexander. The question becomnes, “Who are we going to cut?” We are already pretty happy with our RBs. So then who? Badly needed depth at O Line? A corner? A ST ace? I doubt it.
Don’t getr me wrong. I think Hartwell is a good guy. But oakland must cut someone to make room for him.
