Around SBN: AEG To Purchase Spurs?

I know people around here think that I think Selvin Young is the second coming of TD, but I really don't think that. I'd be remiss to compare any running back to TD. TD is a once in a generation running back.

I think my whole thing with Selvin Young is that I see much of the same kind of explosiveness in him as I used to see in TD. Durability issues aside, Young's rookie highlight reel above reminds me alot of TD's highlight reel from 1995. Sure TD had more yards, but he also won the starting job before the start of the season, Selvin never won the starting job until we cut Henry a week or so ago.

My point is, I see the potential. The potential to be a very good running back in the NFL. TD had that same potential, but the difference is that TD took that potential and turned it into something never seen before. His name belongs in the same group as Walter Payton, OJ Simpson, Eric Dickerson, Barry Sanders, or Gale Sayers. TD was even better than our beloved Floyd Little. I put Floyd on the same level as the Emmit Smiths or Marcus Allens...still great, but not quite up to the level of specialness of the TDs or Walter Paytons of Barry Sanders of the world.

Selvin Young has all the potential to be in that second tier of great runners, time will only tell. But I can say this, I am a lot more excited about Selvin Young being our starter than I ever was with Tatum or Mike Bell. 2008 is going to be a good year to be a Bronco fan!

with Selvin I see a lot of stretch plays and off-tackle.....

he needs to prove he can get the short and tough yards.

great highlights

I’d forgotten how good a runner Selvin is. The thing I like so much about him is that he has great agility and balance, the ability to absorb a hit and somehow keep his feet and momentum. He doesn’t run through a lot of guys, but he doesn’t get arm-tackled a lot either. Top it off with great speed and elusiveness and you get that highlight reel. If he really has added some more power, I am very very excited. Who cares if he carries the rock only 15 times a game, if he runs like that with a little more power, he is going to be worth a lot of points. Besides, I like Andre Hall and am excited to see Torrain and Pittman.

I was just watching some film of the Broncos in the late ‘90s, and you know what the difference between TD’s runs and Selvin’s were? Much bigger holes. TD had huge holes, that O-Line of the late ‘90s was ridiculous. Last year, the O-Line was an admitted weakness. With bigger holes and a badder Selvin, I’m looking forward to a badass running game.

You are definitely right about the o-line in the 90's...

in fact, TD was averaging under 3 yards per carry through the first 4 games in 1999 before he got injured. He was totally ineffective. I think that might be due to the retirement of certain guys and also free agency.

Agreed........

I think with an improved O-line this kid could really shine, just have to see if he can handle it between the tackles and stay healthy. It’s pretty encouraging to be reminded of what he did behind last years O-line and to think that the blocking will be even better this year hopefully.

The player who thinks he can and the player who knows he can are two different players, which one are you???

Sadly

there was only one td run in all of those highlight videos, and it was a long one. Mdierk is exactly right, those short yardage runs are the difference between Selvin 10-15 carries a game and Selvin the workhorse back.

Time to see what an additional 15 lbs of muscle and approx. 26 lbs of ego/attitude amount to….

lol, 26 pounds of ego. lol

To be fair, how many rushing touchdowns did the Broncos really score last year? Not many…I dont even think we scored all that many inside the 10 yard line either…

TD had a fluidity about him

Something that I can’t quite put my finger on… or maybe it was just that he was so beloved… I still love watching old highlights of TD. He wasn’t “fast” but he made guys miss.

The thing that stands out with Selvin is his speed. I’d forgotten how fast this kid is. Then when you factor in his balance and the ability to slip through tight spaces, it gets me excited about seeing what he can do this season.

He’s not TD, but I don’t think anyone ever will be…. but wouldn’t it be great if he proved me wrong. I’d gladly eat my words.

I hope he can years

Like Portis had in 2002 and 2003. That is what the Broncos really need. a back who can run for 1500, 5 ypc, and 15 tds. I sure hope he has break away speed. I miss days of 70 yard runs

I am actually hoping he becomes a Portis type of back...

Sorry, but I have to disagree about the TD/Floyd Little comparison.

I saw them both play. I’d say they were different but cannot pick which is better. Remember Floyd Little was the only weapon Denver had back then. If he had played with an O-line like the Broncos of the late ‘90’s to open those huge holes; if he had a quarterback like Elway and receivers like McCaffery, Smith and Sharpe to take off some of the pressure, I know he would have posted similar, or perhaps even better numbers.

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

I think

Floyd did more with less. Never had a good line and never had a QB until Charley Johnson got here and by 1974 it was turning into Armstrongs team. I love TD think he should be a HOFer (just like Little), but TD had the greatest QB ever and talent around him, whereas Floyd got everything he got because of himself. Remember he broke all of Jim Browns rushing records at Syracuse
