Not Wanting Competition, Travis Henry Stopped Showing Up
So says Bill Williamson on Hashmarks -
The Broncos' decision to release Travis Henry this morning has been coming for months. Broncos insiders said the team had been unhappy with Henry virtually all spring. In a rare statement about a released player, Denver coach Mike Shanahan made a point to say Henry had a lack of "commitment" to the team. The final straw came in the past week when Henry stopped attending the team's OTA sessions. Yes, Henry was hurt with a hamstring injury he suffered 17 days ago, but injured players are required to show up for work. Henry didn't. Perhaps he was upset that he knew he had to fight for playing time with Selvin Young, Ryan Torain and Michael Pittman. Whatever the reason, the team tired of Henry's lack of dedication.
The Henry experience in Denver was one giant disaster. After he signed a five-year deal with more than $12 million in bonuses, Henry's days in Denver began to get rocky last August when it was disclosed in a Georgia court that he had fathered nine children with nine different mothers in a six-year span.
In early October, the Broncos received a major distraction when it was disclosed that Henry had tested positive for marijuana use and was subject to a one-year NFL suspension. Henry was leading the NFL in rushing after four games at the time of the bombshell. After two long months of distractions, Henry won an appeal of the suspension. Still, he was never the same running back after the story broke. He didn't have a 100-yard game the rest of the season and was plagued by nagging injuries.
The Broncos decided to keep Henry this offseason but reduced his salary to $1 million. Denver's decision to sign Pittman last week was a sign the team was heading toward this move.
Monday, it did. It will be a surprise if Henry ever plays in the NFL again.
With Henry one strike away from a year's suspension and with all the bad publicity, teams will not want to sign this player who at 29 is showing signs of wear and tear. Shaun Alexander, who has no off-field issues hovering over his head, can't get a job, so Henry will be especially challenged finding work. The only chance Henry gets a job is if a desperate team wants him and he agrees to a minimum salary.
This is truly a shame. Henry came to Denver with a lot of promise. He fit the Broncos' zone-blocking system and the team was fully committed to him, but he made one mistake after another.
Sounds alot like what most of us have been saying. Travis Henry simply did not have the heart to compete with the younger guys and fight for his role on this football team. Whether you believe this or not, to me Shanny knew he was going to do this at the first sign of trouble. He wanted to reduce the salary of both Henry and Walker heading into 2008. Walker balked and thus the Broncos had to eat his cap charge. Henry took the bait, but quickly got out of favor, coming to OTA's out of shape, then getting "hurt".
These are exactly the type of "me first" players the Broncos NEED TO AVOID. From the looks of it, Mike Shanahan agrees.

Another sad case..
This happens time and time again in the league. If I were coach I would make the same call too. Travis has always been expendable to me. So good luck for his future but the Bronco’s will keep it moving.

Henry
I love the name Henry, my grandfather’s name was Henry, but there the similarities end. My Grandfather (known as Hank) taught me how to fish, how to hunt, but more importantly how to fish. He had one wife, Selma was her name, she was kind. I wonder how many of Travis’ grandkids will remember the name Henry. I have this funny feeling that this team is moving in the right direction. Goodbye Henry.

Anyone else notice how much of the media articles have a tone
that this move by Shanny was EXPECTED? Like every writer out there is saying the writing was on the wall for weeks and the Pittman signing made it apparent that Henry’s days were coming to an end as a Bronco.
It’s funny cause in reading through all the articles written in the last week, including right after Pittman’s signing, I found no one saying Henry is EXPECTED to be cut or that the writing is on the wall for him I read alot about Mike Bell’s days being numbered, yet he is still around. lol
Is the media so full of itself that it tries to pat itself on the back for not seeing what was coming at all? I was caught off guard as anyone else with this move, and I read no where on MHR of Travis Henry possibly being cut…I read about people saying he needs to get back on the field, but not that he’d be cut for not recovering quickly enough from a stressed hammie. Or perhaps I am the only one truly shocked by this move…not that I am not happy with it…cause no my Selvin Young bandwagon is getting filled by the second over here! lol
Then again, the mainstream media is all about making sure they report their version of reality, truth is no longer an important feature of journalism. They leave that to us bloggers. ;)

I thought I was the only one
surprised by the move, and I too recall no media groundswell informing us of his thin-ice status. Maybe we should start a club: Savants Taken Aback Regarding Travis’s Late-developing “Expected” Departure.

I Wrote This...
after Pittman was signed -
What does the addition of Pittman mean for Travis Henry? Initially, nothing. Pittman isn’t an every down back, and the Broncos would still like to see a return on their investment. It does put Henry on notice, however, that if he doesn’t get on the field, and soon, that his likelihood of making the team decreases each day Selvin Young impresses and Henry is in the hot tub. After surmising Henry would be back for this week’s work, Shanny gave a bit more realistic report yesterday -
He can’t go yet. Those hamstrings, you never know how long it’s going to take, so I would say that chances are he’ll be ready for the June camp. He will not be ready this week.
Translation: Be on the field next week, or else.
You have been a Broncos fan long enough to read between the lines with Shanny. He hates nothing more than guys who appear to be dogging it. Henry wasn’t in shape when OTA’s started, then got hurt., then, at least in Shanny’s eyes, wasn’t doing enough to get back on the field.
You now get what you want. Selvin Young will be given the chance to be the man. Youth will be served…

That was basically what I was referring to when I said I had only read about people saying
Henry needed to get back on the field. I really didn’t take what you said to mean he would be released…I thought you were referring to a strong tongue lashing from Shanny. lol

no, no, no...
Just look at the Maurice Clarett situation to know that isn’t the case. I firmly believed Brandon Marshall was in trouble last Training Camp had he not sucked it up.
Remember, all the risk was removed when the contract was renegotiated. Henry was guaranteed ZERO dollars in 2008, so releasing him was definitely the writing on the wall with the “injury” being the final straw…

Its funny
When Shanny does that everyone in the Media will try and crucify him. I dont recall Shanny ever calling a WR who did that a girl or get pissed at another WR who sat out training camp cuz he said he hurt his hammy and was riding a bike or called out and refused to speak to a DE who was on a dancing show. See the fat ass Tuna gets away with that crap and has won as many Super Bowls as Shanny. Plus since when has Williamson ever gotten a scoop. He probably had to get it from someone else

The NFL probably has connections with ESPN or whoever Williamsson
works for. The scoop is given to him by the execs becauyse he covers the Broncos.

One of the writers
went to great lengths to carefully word a question to the effect that Travis might not have been in shape arriving at camp. With a very small smile, Shanahan congratulated him on an insightful query.
NFL players need to understand that in today’s market there is no offseason – there’s game season and training season. That was only one part of what Henry doesn’t seem to ‘get’, and I feel for him in some ways. But not to the point of messing up Young’s development – just before Shanahan was informed that Henry didn’t arrive this morning, Shanny and some wriiters were talking about how pleased with Young The Coach is. With Hall looking good, Torain giving a good impression and Pittman a viable ‘The Sky is Falling’ option, small wonder that Mike decided that distractions, especially expensive ones, aren’t going to stay. Good for him

Amen!
I didn’t like Henry comming to Denver in the first place. He did seem to be the right man for the job for the time though. I will also admit he looked promising at the begining of last year. As I have said before the one thing I like about Denver is they seem to make a good effort to get quality people not just quality football players. I thought he would be around till next year. If he kept clean it would have been nice to keep him for one more year. But I am not sad to see him go and I have a lot of respect for Coach for making a great call. I think this really sends a message, the Broncos are focuse this year and they don’t want any distractions. This did come as a suprise if anything I thought his injury would hold him back. I guess in a way it is all related. Best of luck to you Henry else where.
One piece of advise, don’t get drunk and get in to it with a cab driver and them blame coach for all you problems. :)

I thought these OTA's were all voluntary
I know that word should be in quotes these days, but technically you cannot cut a player for not appearing at a voluntary activity. This is a criticism of the Bill Williamson article, not the Broncos decision. Well, I guess it is a criticism of the system as well. Its one more thing that needs to be revisited in the new CBA.
by MattR on Jun 2, 2008 11:57 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Well ask Odell Thurman about that
There is nothing voluntary in the NFL. Thats in name only. Probably a way to deal with the Union and the CBA. Plus I dont care what the reasoning is he got fired. He did not want to compete. So then see ya!!

It is impossible for me to understand
how someone could make the decisions Henry made. He made more money per year in his career than I made in my entire working life as a salesman. He didn’t even have the sense to show up in shape to OTAs. Who ever is advising this young man did him no favors. His agent is as big a fool as he. What a shame, what a waste.

It is very simple firstfan
His Squishware needed upgrading. Most of us upgrade our squishware to 2.0 (with 100% more maturity!!!) sometime in our teens. The military does a lot of squishware upgrades for young people, and lots of people like to get upgraded via college, though in some cases, both avenues run the risk of causing a squishware malfunction.
Henry’s squishware is still on a pre-conceptual version. He REALLY doesn’t get it, with the “it” being rational self-interest. This in turn has a paralyzing effect on his ability to think long-term. Lots of people have difficulty with long-term, goal-oriented thinking, but the only way to get better is to practice and integrate your mistakes. Henry’s feeble attempts at long-term thinking (taking a pay cut) are very second-handed in nature, and in a way, I really pity him, which is an awful feeling.
Even with his mistakes staring him right in the face, he still doesn’t understand. It is like looking at a child in a man’s body. It is kind of disturbing actually….

Squishware
Great term. I bet a year at Unisea or even a season on an SE slimeline would provide lifelong instant uprades. Too much money at too young an age.

I think Shanahan stuck up for this guy,
and so did I for that matter. For Henry to show up out of shape (in fact, to not even show up at all), is inexcusable. Folks may deserve second chances, and maybe even thirds. But he used them up in Denver. It’s a shame, but the team will be better for it.
