The "Ultimate" Rankings: What Madden Thinks Of Us
I know many of you have lost countless hours of sleep just thinking about what our player's rankings will be in Madden 09, and I'm the first with the breaking news.
Here's the link for our beloved Broncos
But the fun doesn't stop there folks. We've got to compare and contrast the Orange and Blue to the rest of AFC West.
Here's the link for those not-so-loveable-losers in KC
Here's the link for those bandwagoners in the baby blue and yellow
Last and definately least are those neanderthals from Oakland
Yes, yes there's really no point to this blog besides complaining and after my blog about low expectations I shouldn't really care right? But how can they give Cutler an 86....

3rd Sting QB
Judging by these stats, the friendly people at Madden are suggesting Sam Paulescu will be our back-up to the back-up. 50 arm strength and accuracy? Nice!
Raiders
DT - Tommy Kelly - overall: 93
DT - Tardell Sands - Overall: 90
LOLB - Robert Thomas - overall: 79
MLB - Kirk Morrison - overall: 92
ROLB - Thomas Howard - overall: 91
Is it just me, or is that awfully high for a team, that can’t stop the run?

I certainly can't argue against their linebackers...
They may be Raiders but Morrison and Howard are good players.
There's absolutely
no way that can be possible! On the latests internet roster update, Sands had an 85 and Kelly an 82. Kelly was out for the end of the season with some kind of leg injury, too. How do you jump 11points without playing??

Well...
We couldn’t stop the pass, but I’m sure Champ, Dre and Lynch all get awesome ratings, too…
Please check out my blog at http://thefulldeck.blogspot.com/ , now redesigned and recommited!
What are you talking about? We were like 7th or 8th in the league against the pass last year.
Michael Fabiano really knows nothing about football outside of regression analysis and stat extrapolation. If it doesn’t have to do with fantasy football, his opinion is worthless.
There's a difference
between not being able to pass and not having to. Ejruiz is right. We didn’t give up very many passing yards because teams didn’t throw against us very much. They were too busy running it down our throats. When they did pass we didn’t stop them very well. Yards per attempt gives a better measure of how well teams moved the ball when they passed. At 6.3 YPA we were in a three-way tie for 19th. When you figure in scoring it’s worse. A major theme of the 2007 Broncos is that we ranked significantly lower in points for and points against than we did in yardage for and yardage against. And pass defense followed that pattern. When you divide the number of passes thrown against us by the number of passing TDs we gave up, it comes out to 18.3 passes per TD. We ranked 29th on that stat. We gave up a lot of TDs for the number of passes thrown against us. So yes, we were 7th in terms of yardage given up. Only six teams gave up fewer passing yards. But only two teams had fewer passes thrown at them.

But the raiders were worse than us against the pass
It’s not like Nnamdi suffered from that!

It depends on the stat
If you consider how many yards they gave up per pass, they were significantly worse. If you consider how often those passes went for TDs, they were significantly better. It was easier to gain yardage against them but but not as easy to score. I really don’t know what the Madden game takes into account. Some of their rankings make no sense to me.

I don't really know what this means but
I have heard that Champ is a perenial 99. It looks to me like he was listed as a 97?
So I guess everybody thinks last year was a sign that Champ is starting to decline? I got news for them, 2008 is going to be a totally different story from our corners….

I may be wrong on this.
One of my neighbor kids tells me that Champ isn’t a 99, but is still the highest ranked CB in the game at 97. Can anyone confirm that?

Sadly, yes.
Everything I’ve heard had Champ as a 97, but still the game’s best.

What does "Importance" mean?
and why would Jay Cutler only be a 72? If we lose him 8-8 would be a miracle.

I've been doing a little research.
One of my neighbor’s kids has been my source for Madden. He tells me that “importance” is some kind of combination of the player’s rating, his position on the team, and how that is relevant to other players on the team. If I’m understanding correctly, a low importance score could mean he’s not a good player, but it can also mean that there are quite a few key players on the team.
Put Cutler on a team where the QB position is a desperate need, and his importance score changes. In other words, importance isn’t an “individual score”, it’s based on the team the guy is playing for (as well as the position and the rating).
I’ve been getting real tempted to try the game out. I’ve been to my friend’s place a few times, and his son has tried to teach me the game. We play on “coach” mode, where I can run a team without running individual players. In this manner, I don’t have to compete with fast hands and fingers tht the young folks are going to have. There are a lot of shortfalls (such as not being able to “train” a team in between scheduled opponents, and not being able to assign specific gap coverages for the line such as 1 and 2 gap), but overall it’s not bad.
I’m hoping to get a newer and better computer this summer (I use my wife’s laptop right now) so that I can do more with MHR. A side benefit might be gettting into some of the games I hear folks talking about!

Beware Madden...
Especially the fantasy draft mode…
What are the requirements for a computer for this game?
Or is it better to play on a Xbox?
by Arctic Bronco on Jun 22, 2008 11:18 AM MDT up reply actions
Good news!
They don’t plan on releasing a PC version this year (first time they won’t I believe), so your free time is still yours!
And I don’t know if I should maybe introduce this in another thread, but has anybody ever heard of the cpu sim game called Front Office Football? I think a lot of guys here would enjoy it, as it isn’t focused on the arcade style like Madden is, and it is nowhere near the learning curve and tech specifications of EAs Head Coach game. EA actually used to have the license for FOF, but they dropped it in 2001 and it has been indie developed sice then by Solescimic Software. They no longer have permission to use NFL team names (think: Denver Mustangs) and logos, but they do use actual players names (but not actual coaches or scouts or front office personnel. I think I had some guy named Dirk Diggler coaching the Broncos, but by golly I had Cutler). They use actual cap numbers, so in theory it could be used as an interface to keep track of the cap for the broncos. You also manage your stadium (you can even move your team or build a new stadium). It has in depth free agency, draft (and another game for college football that allows you to import your draft class if you want), as well as trades, multiplayer, design your own plays and playbook, timing of team activities, etc. When you have all your ducks in a row you can simulate each weeks games, and participate at several levels, from establishing the game plan you want your assistants to execute (you can cut in any time you want if they aren’t getting it done), to individually calling every play. What you can’t do is control the players.
The game isn’t very expensive ($29 I think) and they have a free demo that lets you do everything except draft and simulate a season.
And for anyone turned off by the fact that it doesn’t have actual teams, no worries, because there are huge FOF communitites that have files you can download that update the game to have all the teams and their logos, as well as allowing you to pick up current rosters for hte teams as well as draft classes.

Dirk Diggler!!!???
Is that for real, Styg, or have you been seeing too much Mark Wahlberg? [snort] (Truth is, I think he’s a very good actor.)

That sounds awesome
I hardly ever play the normal “action” mode. I usually just play endless hours of franchise mode never really playing a game unless I get to the playoffs. I’ve always felt that signing free agents and drafting rookies and stuff was the best part. So if you could give me a link that would be great.
here is the quick link
And here is the demo.
I plan on doing a post on this later in the week.

I takes me one season
to improve my ratings, So I dont worry so much what a fomer fader coach gives the Bronco players. Plus, just using JC as a model. On a QB I want his power and accuracy up there. Plus when I am controlling him nothing else will matter cuz its me actually with the real awareness.

Hehe...
I have Super Duper Pinball installed on my computer. Lots of fun…
...What?
You mean like a real pinball machine, that you have to stand up to play and that can’t be paused???
I saw one once, in a deserted bowling alley in Burns, Oregon….

I know, I know...
Actually there is an art to playing real pinball. But it’s nothing compared to today’s games. That’s why you saw the machine in a deserted bowling alley. Both games are rapidly becoming curiosities, museum pieces.

You mean bowling is actually based on a physical activity???
I thought it was just a video video game where a cartoonish bear sits on an intertube and flys down an icy straight-away to knock down ten penguin pins.

Yeah it was actually a physical sport.
Everybody knows about the rolling the ball down the lane and hitting the pins part. What they might not know about is the carving your own pins and bowling balls out of rocks part. Boy, that was hard. = )

Franchise Mode
Im kinda a self-proclaimed Madden maniac. I’ve played franchise mode through about 10 seasons and the highest Jay Cutler reached was 89. He was superbowl MVP and league MVP one year and he still only went up 2 points overall. Haters….
Whenever I play franchise mode, Cutler shoots up to 99 within a few years...as
does everyone else. It’s actually quite annoying. Am I doing something different that causes all my players to skyrocket in ratings or am I just “that good” in training camps?

The only ones for me...
that increase are Doom, Marshall, and Scheff. Marshall and Doom reached 95s and Scheff was like 5th in afc mvp voting. I like TEs….
I always
use my TE. He usually leads in receptions for me. You a go to guy on a medium range 3rd downs. Or I like having him do a skinny post and hit my slot wr underneath him

I am obsessive with stats...
so I always make sure BMarsh, Eddie Royal, and Scheff have over 100 yards receiving. Cutler usually has 400 yards passing. Selvin has about 200 yards rushing…
Obviously, I only play 2-3 games in a season as I also don’t like un realistic stats like how Mike Vick always rushes for 2400+ yards and is the NFL MVP…it’s just absurd.

Naturally,
I create myself as the SS…it must be a Bronco fan thing, cause I have noticed many other Broncomaniacs love the S position like I do.

one of my favorite
positions is safety, along with TE. A guy like the late Sean Taylor with speed, strength, and ball-hawking ability just amazes me.

I also love safeties
Of course give me a pair of Ed Reed type safeties any day… I always try to grab him and Troy Polamalu…
I usually make a stud
DT. Nothing improves the secondary than a run stuffing/pass rushing DT, then I will get around to a pass rushing DE. Then by my 3rd season I make a CB.

I've never actually played with the real teams.
I usually create 32 teams and input them into Franchise mode, because the real NFL ratings are so terribly schewed that they don’t reflect realistically at all. For instance, when I try to play Franchise mode with my made up team from Los Angeles against the NFL teams, Reggie Bush almost always runs for 2400 yards, with LDT not far behind at 2200.
On another note, I agree with Madden on the all-time rostars. I would much rather have Bob Waterfield or Charley Trippi as my QB than a hack like John Elway. \sarcasm
Why do I live in Kansas City?
I have some complaints
but aside from small things in the system (like cutler shoudl be an 89 in my book) it doesnt look to bad for a first run of the madden ratings. these get updated quite a bit and in the end they get most of em right. tommy kelly a 91? hmm questionable and kwame harris would be lucky to be a 78 if he was on another team he woudl probably end up a 72 if he were say a viking or a steeler!
