Learning About Rivals

Right off the bat, I don't have any new information or opinions here. This is an information gathering post.

I for one am very interested in what our rivals are doing. That means the Chargers, Chiefs, and Raiders. Maybe even the Colts, since we most likely will have to beat them if we ever want to get to the Super Bowl again. Recently, they really have had our number.

I know this is a Broncos community, and I am a Bronco fan through and through, but I am also a fan of football. I also think that I can be a better bronco fan if I understand more about their situation. No team exists in a vacuum. What I am proposing is to have some fan posts about our rivals (by me, or hopefully by other people more knowledgeable than me). The information, while not directly about the Broncos, should be relevant. It should also help fill the void between now and when training camp starts with some fresh information.

To that end, I would like to start gathering some information about our rivals. Things like their personnel and schemes, what direction they are headed, etc. Not just surface level fluff either like "the faders suxxorz," but something which gets at exactly what parts of them suck and where they are strong. What reasons they have for hope and why they are likely to disappoint their fans.

Star-divide

Anybody that would like to help me in this quest for knowledge, please post comments or fanposts with anything you know about our rivals. If you know of good sources for information on the Chiefs, Raiders, and Chargers, mention those too.

Thanks in advance to anybody who helps, and thanks to DaBolts for already sharing his knowledge.

I have really enjoyed and found educational

the conversations that we have had around here with opposing teams’ fans. For the most part, the ones who come by are knowledgeable and respectful. I think the fans themselves are often the best way to learn… Denver fans all know how bad local media reporting can be (cough cough denverpost) and MHR proves how much more comprehensive a group of fan’s knowledge can be.

I wish there was a way Guru could team with a rival team’s SBNation blog and cross post – I think these Chargers threads would have been even better if they were open to posters from both DaBolts’ home site as well as MHR… If not “official” maybe we could recruit people like DaBolts to do some post sharing (i.e. I will post about the Broncos on your site if you do the same for your team here).

I was thinking the same thing

If you could let me know some of your thoughts on cross posting, I would like to work on our part from Silver and Black Pride.

We do alot of this, especially...

during the season. I also have these guys on the podcast once we get closer to Training Camp. I’ll get Chris(AP) and Saint(SABP) on the show when I get back from vacation.

Can SBNation's platform

support actual cross-posts with shared comments? That’s be my ideal… Looks like a Raiders post from SABP and a Broncos post from MHR.

If I understand it correctly,

the Chargers are one of the few teams who don’t have an SBNation site. On the other hand, one of these bright young men, I think it might have been Guru himself, said there are a couple of good independant sites out there. I hate to tease, but I don’t know them. Perhaps someone else who reads this can help.

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

The Chargers are

The only NFL team lacking an SBNation page. One site with similar content is the “DaBolts” site mentioned in Jonah’s post.
And it was either Guru or HT who mentioned that there are two sites with solid Chargers content, but neither want to join the SBNation network.

Correct...

There are 2 solid independent Chargers sites out there—www.BoltTalk.com and www.BoltHype.com. I do alot of stuff with BoltHype, and whenever I need to get a Chargers Blogger for an opinion Rob is who I contact.

During the regular season...

...I’ll be suspending the typical posts you see at MHR University and doing a week by week game prep on our opponents. I try to place an emphasis on how the systems match-up, and do a little bit of Xs and Os comparisons. A few of these got linked in ‘07 by Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

With a year under my belt writing for MHR, I hope the product is even better this year. I’ve been forced to look more closely at teams than I was when I first showed up at MHR, and I have a better grasp for some of the teams I wasn’t as up on. While I try to be objective about what I report on other teams, I’m obviously a Broncos fan. My hope is that when people read my stuff, they can tell I’m a Denver fan but find the stories to be a fair and accurate assesment of each team and their chances.

Also keep in mind that we have several readers and contributers who will be putting up posts as well, giving their thoughts on match-ups. Between all of us, I expect an awesome critique of other teams that will even surpass last year. That may not help right now, but it is something to look forward to when the season kicks off.

If there is anything I can do to help any member fill in the holes on schemes or systems, please let me know.

As if I needed more reasons to anticipate the start of the regular season.

no kidding

I’m dieing for football season, or at least training camp. One of the ways I’m itching that scratch is by learning more about our rivals. So far, I’ve learned that the Raider fans are mostly just ignorant. They don’t know anything about the Broncos and make outrageous statements to that end. A lot of Chiefs fans are delusional, thinking they are going to the playoffs and maybe the Superbowl this year. It has helped to put some of my own dreams for the Broncos in perspective. With change comes uncertainty, and it can be easy to fall into the trap of assuming that the change will be for the better. I’m still optimistic that we will make the playoffs and be a force this season, but I’m learning to be more reasonable about the fact that there have been a TON of changes to the Broncos this season, and it’s unlikely that they will all work out.
