The Best QB's in the NFL, well Fox Sports forgot one

I was perusing Fox Sports. I usually dont but it is Friday and I enjoy Jason Witlocks column. Well there was a poll on the best QB's in the NFL. Well they listed Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger,Tony Romo, and David Garrard. It may be that I am a huge homer when it comes to my team and the players on it. But is there any doubt that Cutler is better than Garrard? Plus I honestly have to say I dont think Romo is one of the best either. Am I wrong in thinking that Cutler should be considered one of the best? I mean the kid is losing weight and doesnt know why and still puts up great numbers. John Elway did not have those kind of numbers in his 2nd season as a starter. (I know Elway played under a different type of system). I think he is but, I also think it goes to the larger bias against the Broncos

I'm not surprised

Michael Fabiano really knows nothing about football outside of regression analysis and stat extrapolation. If it doesn’t have to do with fantasy football, his opinion is worthless.

Well...

David Garrard had almost the same amount of Touchdowns and like 15 less Interceptions not to mention a higher QB rating. He is still young and has not completely proved himself yet. So I agree for now but by next year, he should be up there.

I can buy Garrard there

over Cutler, he had a really good year last season. Threw only 3 picks (18 TDs). And led his team to the playoffs (beat Pittsburgh). His season QB rating was 102.2. He might be a one-year wonder, but that was a heck of a year.

All those QBs have led their teams to the playoffs. Romo is the only one without a victory and 3/5 have won Superbowls.

You're right

Those guys all belong there, except maybe Romo. They are pert of an upper echelon of QB’s that win games and go to the playoffs. This first tier also includes, IMO, Jeff Garcia, Matt Hasselback, and Donovan McNabb. They have all proven themselves in big games with good clutch performances. Jay has not done any of this, and therefore does not belong in the first tier. This time next in a year or two, however, people will be talking, and Jay will find his place among the game’s greats.

He had a good rating

But he only thre the ball 325 times. that was 22nd in the NFL. His team is built on the run and stopping the run. I just dont think he is a tpo 10 QB, yet. Jville is a team that was built to get a lead and hold onto the lead. They are not good at coming from behind. case in point the Indy games and the playoff loss to NE.

You're right

he does not play in a system that caters to putting up big numbers in the passing game. In Jacksonville’s offense, the only things the QB is asked to do are convert third downs and not turn the ball over. Garrard is adept at both of those, but not reat at anything else. In other words, he is a perfect fit right where he is, but he would struggle anywhere else. I do not think that playing in a system that caters to one’s strengths takes away from his status as a great football player. Is he as good as Brady or Manning? No, but he is the best at what he does, and he wins games, and for that I believe he belongs in the top QB’s in the league.

You did have a great point about his lack of attempts, though, and the fact that he is average when his team is behind. I think the former perfectly suits his style of play, and the latter is something that will improve over time, as will his effectiveness in big games.

Happy that Cutler is not the list!

There’s somthing kinda fun happening here. We have a QB that played last season with his strength decreasing each and every game. We have a QB that for ‘then-unknown-reasons’ had trouble catching his breath after scrambles. He still finished as a top tier QB.

This season, more and more, is looking like, “The Perfect Under the Radar Season!”

Let’s love the lack of respect. Let’s love the mainline media’s love of every other team but us.

May I quote Zappa…one of the greats of this site, “13-3 baby!”

I do agree

But what I want to see happen is what I think we all saw in the Titan game last year. Or even in the Viking game. His best 2 stat games of the year. No picks multiple TD’s. Against Minnesota he was 26/37. I know this is sacreligous here but if he keeps improving at the rate I think he is, I believe he will own all of Elways passing stas when he is done. Most yards and TD passes, ect

I agree, Let's both be sacrilegeous.

Had Elway had Shanny, from the beginning, his stats might have been ‘out-of-reach’ forever, but he did not, and Cutler does.

Shanahan obviously sees this with the WR’s he’s looking at. He plainly wants to exploit Cutler and I bet Cutler is also hoping this is true.

Cutler is the MAN!

It is really exciting to have Jay as our quarterback, give him a little more time and set back and watch-it will be fun. imo he has only started 1 season and 5 games the year before , so this is his 2nd year as our main man. He has so much potential and he has shown alot of guts and heart on and off the field. There was a post comparing Matt Leinart and Jay—-THERE IS NO COMPARISON , I found that post to be alot of cards wishful dreaming. A lack of respect for our team is nothing new but soon my friends they will have to show the Broncos and Jay some love. GO BRONCOS.

This league is about "Ws"

If you have a losing season and you are in your second year you won’t get any respect. I think as the Ws pile up this year he start to get a lot more respect.

Once again

you have hit the target in the bulls eye! And those Ws will pile up!

Program wasn't future tense

No doubt the program was about who are the best QBs, not who will be the best QBs and, yes, Gerrard was better than Cutler last year.
His TD to INT ratio and QB rating says so! But I expect the future to arrive this year.

One thing in common

All of those QB’s were on playoff teams and three of the five are already sportin’ hardware.

Cutler is good and will be for a long time, but like Thorpe said above… it’s about the W’s.

Fox and Romo

Fox has a rooting interest in Romo being high on the list. The marquee team in their NFC package is Dallas, and they almost always have them as the main national game, with Troy Aikman and Joe Buck (who, for being such a good baseball broadcaster, is terrible with football.) To me, there is something cockamamie about Romo, and all the talent around him makes him look better than he really is.

As for Jay, this is the year. He is about to lead our team to serious contention, and most people will be surprised by it (because they’re stupid, and too lazy to think things may be different one year to the next.) Once the wins come, the recognition will come too.

Good point

I hadn’t even connected the dots between Fox, NFC Package, Dallas and Romo. You are right on!
