Can Selvin Young have a 2,000 yard season?

Lets do the math. Of course we’ll have to base these numbers off of last year which has a whole slew of issues but it’s the best we can do for now. First of all the NFL currently has a 16 game season so for any back to have a 2,000 yard season he is going to have to average 125 yards per game. Math was never my strong suit so feel free to check it (2,000/16 = 125) Last year he averaged 5.2 yards per carry. So to keep the math easy for me lets say he only averages 5 yards per carry this year. That means he will have to have 25 carries per game. Let’s review the bidding. 25 carries a game, averaging 5 yards per carry for 16 games. Now let us take a look at who will be trying to stop Selvin from reaching that magic number. The first collum is the average rushing yards allowed per game for that teams defense. The second collum is our average stats against that team if we played them last year. If not than I used there last years average.

oakland           145.9 ypg               134 ypg

san diego         107 ypg                  82 ypg

new orleans     102.9 ypg             102.9 ypg

kansas city       130.6 ypg              178 ypg

tampa bay       107.9 ypg                107.9 ypg

jacksonville     100.3 ypg                  49ypg

new england     98.3 ypg                  98.3 ypg

miami               153.5 ypg                  153.5 ypg

cleveland          129.5 ypg                  129.5 ypg

atlanta                127.1 ypg                 127.1 ypg

oakland              145.9 ypg                 134 ypg

new york              97.7 ypg                  97.7 ypg

kansas city        130.6 ypg                  178 ypg

carolina             110.7 ypg                     82 ypg

buffalo                124.6 ypg                   171 ypg

san diego           107 ypg                        82 ypg

TOTAL: 1919.5 = average of 119.9 ypg    1906.9= average of 119.1

Last year Denver: 1956.8 = average 122.3 ypg

So can Selvin have a 2,000 yard season…

Too Many Carries!

25 carries over a 16 game season gives you a 400 carry total! I believe the threshold for serious longterm ramifications is far below that figure, but I’m not sure. Few elite backs have been able to tempt fate in such a manner and survive for much longer, but many great ones have fallen victims to such a ridiculous workload. If that’s the cost, I sincerely hope they don’t aim for it.

Agreed

Way too many carries. Virtually no RB can carry that many times (TD only carried it 392 times when he broke 2000), especially ones that aren’t known for power and toughness like Young. However, I think his per carry average can go up considerably. He is very talented, elusive, fast, and with a little more power, great at breaking tackles. If he wants to hit 2000 yards, he’s going to have to do it with something more like 6.1 Yards/carry, like Barry Sanders did. That is going to take substantially improved play not only on his part, but also on the part of the offensive line (in run and pass blocking) and the passing offense (so that teams have to honor the pass even more and play the run softer). Personally, I don’t think the run blocking will be good enough this year, but maybe a player like Peyton Hillis can push it over the top. I think Young is great runner and hope he can stay healthy and productive as a primary back, but 2000 yards just seems very unlikely at this point

Maybe not, but

We should have a better line this year and Selvin has increased his strength to benching 360#s. If he could stiff-arm his way to a 5.7 average he would need only 22 carries per game and this might be doable.

5.7

Only Jerious Norwood of the Falcons racked up a YPC that high last season (6.0) and he only had to worry about 103 carries…

Hey

I’m living in the la-la-land-of-pre-season-feel-goods. Don’t confuse me with facts. :-) The season will bring me back to reality quick eough.

I don't think he'll get 2000.

But I do think he will have a stellar season.

Also you have to take into consideration

that those numbers are based on the total team rushing yards, not just Selvin’s individual YPG against that team. The numbers you put up would also have to include Andre Hall, Michael Pittman, and Ryan Torain’s numbers, as well as some others. I do believe he will have a good season, though. Here are my projections for each RB for next year:

Young: 1286 yds, 9 TD’s, 4.8 ypc, 14 starts
Pittman: 479 yds, 3TD’s, 4.1 ypc, 2 starts
Hall: 378 yds, 1TD, 4.4 ypc
Torain: 465 yds, 5TD’s, 4.02586 ypc

That’s 2608 yds, which is a lot, but we’re the Broncos, come on. I see Torain getting more carries toward the end of the season, and I factored in a sprained ankle for Selvin. Not bad for your first year as a starter, and I have spent way too much time thinking about this.

Hmmm...

Only one team (Minny) had over 2,400 yards rushing last year and only one other (Jax) cracked 2,200, so this is extremely optimistic…

Ahh.. so you have done your reaserch!

Serves me right for not looking anything up. Truth be told, I pulled all the numbers for everyone but Selvin right out of my bum. Only reason I have his down like that is for my Fantasy Football reference sheet I am making.

However, I think we could conceivably get upwards of 2400 if the o-line holds up and everyone makes a good contribution. The backups probably won’t be nearly as productive as I have them down for; let’s say that those are their ceilings for the season. After looking at the numbers and trends a little bit more, I’ll bump my overall number down to 2189 yards. Much more realistic. As you can tell, I am mind-screwing this so hard right now my brain is throbbing.

I dont think he is duarable enough

To handle the load of 25 carries a game. Maybe I am wrong, but he hasnt played a full season since he was in HS. I would be happy if he got 1500 yards

by broncfanstuckinsd on Jun 29, 2008 4:42 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Strong from ten to ten

Look at what Shanny has done. He wants Selvin to be strong between our ten and their ten. If we have to he wants Pitman and Torain to punch it in. I’ll say it again, ‘benching 360 lbs. five times will make many many great stff-arms this year. Between the ten and the ten Selvin will have room to move. If he does not get a touchdown, and we are inside the ten, Shanny will let Pitman and Torain prove their toughness.

With Cuttler healthy I think teams will fear our passing game. This should open up things for Selvin. With Selvin running between their ten and our ten he would have to average 7yrds a carry, 18 carries, 16 games, to reach 2000. This is not a rediculous number.

Between the ten and the ten, if his average is six yards, he needs to carry the ball just over twenty times a game.

Selvin not only has a great attitude as a person…he is proving something to both us and himself. I like this.

7?!

7 yards a carry is a very ridiculous number. As I said above, only Norwood surpassed 5.6 and he did it in just over 100 carries. I’d be pleased if the Broncos, as a team, ran for 2,200 yards!

I should have replied here. As I said above...

I’m currently in the la-la-land-of pre-season-feel-goods. Right now what I wrote is possible, not probable, but during pre-season la-la-land and imagination is allowed.

Irrational Exuberance!

Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor combined for 2,185 yards in 395 carries AND Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew tallied 1,970 yards in just 390 rushes… is Selvin either of those pairs rolled into one guy? I just don’t think so.

Okay - I'll bite

No, Selvin will not run for 2000 yards.

His average, durability and long runs would have to go way up. He would need to flash Adrian Peterson level skills (and be repeatedly running off of Hutchinson’s enormous hip, ideally) to get there. No way does his average rise dramatically with more work… He is not the type to wear down a defense and exploit them for a big run late, although the whole stable may be capable of this. I couldn’t find stats for it, but I recall TD busting loose for a big run late in games fairly regularly – leading to his 2000 yards.

What I could see is 2000 yards from scrimmage for Selvin. He has shown some decent ability to catch out of the backfield, and if he turned out say 50 yards a game in the air, he would only need 75 on the ground to hit 1000. 50 is realistic – Brian Westbrook hangs right around that number each year, and consistently puts up 2000 yards from scrimmage (when healthy). OTOH, Reid gives him the ball close to the goal line, and throws to the RB far more than Shanny would like. I do think it is a great way to get the ball to an explosive playmaker in space, and limit the wear and tear.

Mike Clark’s point though, is the tough one – I think it is very true that Selvin will get the ball for 80 yards of the field, and not near the goal line. This suggests to me he will need to be hitting on a decently long run every game to even approach these numbers.

So I will say
- 2000 on the ground – no way, even LDT in his MVP season only ran for 1800+.
- 2000 total yards from scrimmage is doable, but takes Westbrook-like skills and a lot of HB screens and passes to happen.
- 1500 total yards is more likely, unless my man starts shaking people consistently for 50+ yard runs.

Plus look at what it would take carry-wise

400 carries is a pretty good amount of carries. Jamal Lewis hasnt been the same, LJ and Jamal Anderson had over 400 carries and have been hurt the following seasons. I dont want him to have to get 400 carries, where as 300-315 would do nicely w/ a 5 YPC thats 1500 yards. Plus I am not saying it will happen now, but dont be suprised if LT starts bearking down he usually is around 400 touches a year (rushing and receiving) that much punishment is gonna start to take a toll on the body.

by broncfanstuckinsd on Jun 30, 2008 2:37 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Thought about going into that

To get 2000 you need upwards of 400 touches. Historically that kind of action limits your career going forward…

I’d prefer him keeping the average up around 5 for 200-250 carries (getting 1000) and splitting the rest with the other backs. He goes for 1000 and he becomes either our #1 back who has not been abused and can keep on trucking for years to come.

LT is a beast, but yes he eventually will pay for all the work he has put in… Here’s hoping (as a Broncos fan) that it is sooner rather than later. As a football fan, I would love to see him run forever!

OK, I give

Why you guys want me to leave la-la-feel-good-land before the first pre-season game..I just don’t know. I’m sure you think its for my own good (probably is). I love this site! Except the occasional reallity check.

I’ll settle for 2000 yds from scrimmage.

The fun thing about the last several comments is evidence that Davis should be in the Hall.

Bingo bango

This is not a negative thing, this dose of reality. It is just there to highlight how absolutely unreal TD’s seasons were – and we haven’t even touched on the scoring, another feat of his. ;-)

Back in La-la-land, Selvin will definitely go for 2000 yards. Who could ever doubt him? (Does that make you feel better Mike :-) )

Darth Davis turned Walker to the dark side.

There is still hope for young Marshall. Brash he is. Mmmmm. Needs to be traind in the ways of the Shanny, he does.

Well

I think Walker was already close to the darki side already. Then darth Davis just gave him the little push he needed. But just as Vader before him Davis is finding his apprentice is hurt and not what he though when he went after him

Marshall vs. Walker

head to head in a light saber duel, I take Marshall.

Shanny might have some tricks but I’ll bet Emperor Davis can do that thing where he shoots lightning from his fingertips, which is totally unfair.

A great line from Shanahan-Ben-Kenobi

...to Al Davis shortly before Shanahan was fired at the Death Star in oakland:

“You don’t understand what you’re doing Darth Davis. Fire me now, and you’ll only make me more powerful than before”.

The paralelles are frightening. (I’m considering a multi-part series that combines Star Wars with Bronco’s history. No, really. Have been for a couple of months).

Awesome

And with all the parallels with Tibetan Buddhism, by extension
Broncos story = Star Wars = Tibetan Mythology
and so
Mile High = Nirvana?

I like the idea HT. I’d be happy to lend a hand. Mostly glad I am not the only geek around here, even if the biggest. ;-)

Ah! Very Nice.

Mile High equals Nirvana! Yes my friend, “Smells Like Team Spirit” indeed.

I am in awe

of your pun-tification. And a grunge reference all at once!

(Extra points for the Maugham mention – he is practically the patron saint of my home of San Francisco… on top of being a gifted writer.)

The image in my head of a saffron and maroon robed, head-shaven Shanahan sitting in a meditation hall is just tickling me silly. May be time for some photoshop….

Ack!

Sorry for mispelling Maugham’s name. Loved the book, and very much loved the movie (there were two. I prefer the Bill Murray version, which also has a lovely soundtrack).

Embarrassingly, I haven’t read the book, nor seen the movie. By comparison, a mistype is nothin’ to be ashamed of.

Yeah

I don’t think he is a bad guy, just misguided and making bad choices. But don’t we all sometimes?

One thing is for sure – he loves the game and I hope he can channel that into righting his ship.

If we can get a Clinton Portis-type of year from Selvin...

I’ll be happy. I think 1500 yards is about the most we could ask of Selvin. Not that 2,000 yards is impossibe, just highly improbable.

I also don’t think Selvin is going to have many touchdown runs under 6 yards, seeing as how my assumption is that Denver goes with more size inside the 5 yardline.

I’m sure all of our prognosticating will be WAY OFF come the 3rd play of the season, but I’m hoping Selvin can stay relatively healthy (nobody stays 100% healthy for 100% of the season) and become enough of a threat to pull a defensive safety towards the line of scrimmage.

Truly, that’s really what we’re really hoping for here: a more consistent running game that can dominiate in stretches and score with some level of regularity. If that happens, we’ll see more room in the passing lanes, and the offense will be one of the top 7 or 8 in the NFL.

Of course, we could use some good defense, which as we all know is one of the secrets behind a good offense.
