Virtual Broncos: Selvin ready to shine?

Welcome back for another edition of Virtual Broncos. This time the ball carriers of the league stand front and center. Sportsgamer recently released the running back ratings for the 2009 edition of Madden. Guess what? The Denver Broncos recently released Travis Henry!
While Henry is currently on the list under the Bronco name, that will all change come release day. This list does not leave Bronco fans depressed, however, as the back-ups do make an appearance. Madden fans can get their first look at Selvin Young as the starter before...well, before he's even the starter.

Selvin Young has recently made a lot of fuss about being 'the guy' in Denver. He must've known something Denver fans didn't, as his team cut ties with Travis Henry two days after a confident Young spoke to the Post's Jim Armstrong.
"I feel totally different," Young said. "I feel like more of a, if I can use the word, beast. I feel I can do a lot more than last year. Now I know I can do it. It's not, 'Wow, I really did it.' I knew I could do it before. Now I expect to do it."
The undrafted running back out of Texas presently competes in a division of "beasts." While he may seem confident, and coach Shanahan may feel confident, Young still has something to prove. After amassing 729 rushing yards in his first season, Young faces added competition each day: competition from a rookie rated two overall points ahead of him in madden.
That's right, Run DMC has entered the picture and now adds to a division already including LaDainian Tomlinson and Larry Johnson. Ouch. Broncos owners in online leagues have already gotten familiar with the latter two, but now wince at the latest addition to the running machine. Can Selvin, a player whose contract signing went virtually unnoticed by the rest of the world, stack up against the latest and established threats of the AFC West?
He'll have to make an impression during the season to increase his ratings and prestige in the national spotlight, because right now, Selvin's living life down below.
Woah. That's a lot of running backs! However, the ones that matter are the ones the Broncos are going to play the most, and the ones madden owners are going to face the most in franchise mode.

To tell you the truth, neither Travis Henry enticed me: the one in real life OR the one in the virtual world. One had too many troubles with injuries and the other wasn't fast enough to break a touchdown run after splitting the seams and entering the open field. Henry's 87 overall rating, now simply a figment of our imagination in a Bronco uniform, would have ranked third of AFC West running backs. Darn. It looked like he was getting some speed this year.
Now to the opponents. First of all, I have no problem with LT's high marks. The guy's electric. His lowest rating is an eighty-seven! Some backs can barely say that for their highest mark! Try picturing a player with 99 speed and a 92 truck rating. Oh wait, that's LT. In a world of constantly improving rushers, LaDainian Tomlinson is a nightmare. Just as I must attempt the feat each year in Madden, the Broncos must stop LT in order to win this season, or at least contain the San Diego speedster.
Another back who is almost unfair is Larry Johnson, with his combination of size and speed. Unless you’re Champ Bailey, once this guy trucks a defender in the open field, you’re not catching up to him. However, injuries are catching up to the pounding back from Penn State. Nevertheless, the 97 rated truck move and the 90 plus speed that sometimes follows is only eclipsed by LT in the West. If he's able to beat out injuries again, I see LJ as my Steve McNair of running backs.
Non-Raider fans won't be happy with the high props given to D-Mac. One other person who won't be all too happy with the ratings either, if he plays Madden, is Justin Fargas. Those rookies seem to be getting the benefit of the doubt everywhere they go. Such is life in overrated, top draft pick running back land. Don't get me wrong, Run DMC may terrorize opposing defenses next season, but to provide him with that much weaponry from the get go? Scary thoughts involving facing the virtual Raiders' rush attack have crept into my head.
It seems that McFadden has problems with his vision and with catching the football. Now go run that one by the Broncos' defensive staff before they get a better look at Oakland's latest addition. From his 99 rated acceleration onward, the kid's golden. Peterson may have deserved the high marks he got last season, but Darren McFadden received even higher specific ratings from the madden team. Here's a comparison between Peterson's ORIGINAL ratings pre-2007 season and Run DMC's marks. You'll notice Peterson and McFadden share the same rating overall, but the further breakdown of the ratings is listed with the ones in bold superior:

* - Madden 2008 Original Rookie Rating (obtained from sportsgamer)
Well folks, we've reached the bottom of the barrel. That's right, Selvin Young ranks last among the featured backs in the West (and no I did not count Kolby Smith and Darren Sproles silly).
How does Selvin Young stack up? Surely, he’s better than a rookie. While some may have a problem with his rating, others feel he’s right where he belongs: last. Young was never considered an every-down back in the NFL, and McFadden is a highly touted rookie. Those in the "show me" camp in terms of Selvin Young starting are glad Young has to prove himself. However, Young has tacked on a few pounds and wants to compete with and measure up against the rest of the backs in his division. Then again, it’s only the off-season.
The defensive minded among us will point out the number of talented running backs in the 2008 version of the AFC West division and the need for defensive help against the run. However, the Broncos want to have the same rushing success those teams will have against opponents. Selvin Young could very well be that first step.
It looks like Young's weaknesses lie in the vision, stiff arm, and catching areas. Agree? Disagree? Whatever the case, it looks like the man's got some work to do this off-season. Whoever starts at tailback next season, Selvin included, should make it their personal mission to beat out opposing backs in the West after a few roster updates.
One thing's for sure, with an average rated speed of 94.4, the AFC West is going to be one lightning bolt of a division.
More Notes:
After Tomlinson, Steven Jackson and Brian Westbrook have number two ranked, 97 ratings. Then comes Adrian Peterson at 95, followed by Fred Taylor and Larry Johnson with 94 ratings. I’m glad Westbrook continues to get some well-deserved respect. The AFC West also boasts two backs in the top five.
Our old friend Tatum Bell, who I vividly remember speeding down the field with in years past, apparently hasn’t been able to keep his fumblitis much of a secret. Bell’s carrying stands at seventy-five.
While Cedric Benson was off boating and speeding, the Bears picked up a rookie competitor in the draft. Say hello to Matt Forte and his 80 overall rating Cedric. Some guys here at MHR liked Forte coming out of college, but you’re not going to like his better speed ratings.
I will leave you with the rookies and "all-timers":

Lawrence Taylor.
Can we please, for the love of the game and its history, refrain from calling LaDanian Tomlinson “LT”?! I don’t care if Lawrence Taylor gave him his blessing or if he went back in time and killed the original LT before he became a superstar only to have the nickname all to himself. Personally, I call him LDT. I actually like it better. Give it a try; maybe you’ll like it, too.
That said, he’s the most complete RB I’ve ever seen play the game. His career WORSTS look like this: 313 carries, 1236 yards, 10 TD and 5 fumbles (4 lost), plus 51 receptions, 367 yards, 0 TD and 3 fumbles (1 lost). That’s his absolute FLOOR! And now for the fun part… check out his BESTS: 372 carries, 1815 yards, 28 TD and 0 fumbles, plus 100 receptions, 725 yards, 4 TD and 0 fumbles. His ceiling is surreal. Truth is, if the system’s ratings top out at 99, no one else should be within 5 points of the guy.
As for the rest of the AFC West, I think Run DMc is better than Selvin Young right now (if you had to pick either for the 2008 season right now, who would you choose?) and the ratings should reflect his superior tools as outweighing his lack of experience. Fargas, however, should be worse than both and I don’t think it should be all that close. Finally, our dear friend Travis Henry should probably rate better than either youngster, though the contrast in styles makes the comparison difficult.
P.S.: Westbrook is my #2 RB in the league.

Great stuff EJ
I might have to try the new nickname for the dude out of TCU after all. Also glad you like the versatility of Westbrook.
You are correct in the point you’re making about Run DMC and he’s obviously going to be rated higher in Madden because of his physical tools. Can Selvin match-up with these guys? Also, maybe Adrian Peterson got a gift with that offense line in Minni, but for some reason I don’t know if McFadden is going to have the AP type year. Maybe I’m wrong, or maybe it’s the fact that McFadden plays in the West now and Peterson is in the opposite conference. Either way it’s going to be one heck of a season defensively against the run.
I don’t expect Selvin to be there now, but I’d like to see someone step up and make headway in this “battle” of backs. While the Broncos don’t have the best of the West by far, they’re going to have to do it with a committee this season. I just hope it stacks up well, and how well it stacks up will come in part to the success of that young line.

A few thoughts
While not a Madden guy myself, I suspect that I agree a lot with Ejru on most all of his points in his third paragraph.
I also want to express how much I enjoy reading the Madden posts by Phantom! I find myself really excited to see how our defensive guys stack up in this game!
Good job on a fun take for how good our guys are (“virtualy” of course). Does this mean we can get Neo or Morpheus to play for us? (I may be old, but I know a thing or two about what you youngsters are up on)
: )

The Matrix was some time ago :P
Oh, but we do have Niko ALREADY playing for us (If you’ve heard anything about the GTA game). I plan on eventually getting into other facets of the post besides the position ratings, but I think these will suffice for now as will the great discussions ensuing from you guys at MHR. Thanks again for the kind words.

is a 75 overall for those that were wondering. It’ll be interesting to see how Pittman eventually weighs in.

It has been a long time
since I played Madden (how long ago was Jamal Lewis on the cover? Probably not as long ago as it seems).
I am enjoying these looks at the virtual broncos. It gains interest when it becomes understood that EA has TREMENDOUS resources, and also a vested interest in “getting it right”. These ratings will be a lot closer than even most proffessional pundits can forecast, based on the objectivity that EA can exercise.
That being said, I think that they let popular opinion sway them sometimes…

I will also mention
that I once saw a special on G4 about the Madden franchise (a show called “Icons” I think) and I thought it was pretty interesting to see the development of the franchise, including the early input from Madden, like when they brought him a beta to look at.
The beta featured 7 on 7 due to technological limitations of the hardware. Madden took one look and was like “What the F-- is this? It is supposed to be 11 on 11!!!” (He wasn’t nearly as …. refined back then.) They tried to explain that the hardware was limited, and wanted to know if he liked the colors and what not, and he basically told them to F—off until they brought him a game with 11 on 11.
They ended up breaking new ground because of his demands.

Great Post!
Phantom,
I love this angle. I hope you keep up this series.
Any word on wether you will be able to create your own player this year on Madden?
I like the additon of Jim Thorpe to the all time greats. What no O.J. :)
So will they put Pittman as a FB or a RB?
by ThorpeBroncosfan on Jun 5, 2008 1:21 AM MDT 0 recs
I'm sure you'll be able to create players
As you have been for a while now in the Madden series…don’t see why they would take that out…I have some ideas on that front.
Also, who knows where Pittman will go? I think with Henry gone and two fullbacks already on the roster, they would probably put him at the running back position (barring, of course, another possible RB signing…I don’t know if I see it right now). It’ll be interesting to see what the rosters look like on release date.

On the Pittman front
he is an 86 at RB in 08 but when switched to full back he jumps to a 93. On the opposite side Cecil Sapp is an 87 who drops to an 84 when switched to RB. If you play it by the madden numbers it would make more sense to have a 90’s FB and a stable of 80’s RB’s! As to Create-A-Players, yes DWill will be in MY edition of Madden 2009 I have crunched the numbers and will make him a 91 (based on what I think they are giving Foxy).

I'm going to have to do some number crunching myself
maybe I’ll get your help on it in the future. Anyway, that rating boost also works when you switch some TEs to fullback. I don’t know if you’ve tried that yet.

I would be happy to assist in any way
I have some Scouting stuff to finish up but if you need my help you have my email dude! Also side not on the madden front, Free Agents who were on a team last game, usually take a 3-5 point hit from their first rating in madden of the next year ie Al Wilson went from a 92 to an 88. So its safe to assume Travis Henry will look to be a bout an 82 or 83 in the release if he is still an FA (which if Alexander is there is no doubt Henry will be).

Hard Work
When you gage our running backs you have to look back at Davis. TD had a special gift. He knew where he was, where he wanted to be, and what it took to get there. He didn’t think about it…it just happened.
Selvin has had injuries that would have sent most players to the turf crying, “No More!”
This year he says, “I know where I am, where I want to be, and have done what it takes to be there.”
Go Selvin! You made me a fan!
