The Greatest Broncos of All Time....By The Numbers - #0

Mhrgoat_-_0_medium

He we go.  This series, starting with #0, will take us all the way until the Broncos and Raiders get ready to open the 2008 season.  It is my hope that it will inform, entertain, and create some debate among Broncos fans about different guys that have worn different numbers.  In some cases, there will be no debate because a number was only worn by one person.  That is the case with #0, who saw just one season of activity in a Broncos uniform.

The Greatest Bronco To Ever Wear #0 - John Olszewski, FB -- 1962

Johnny 'O' Olszewski was an All-American Running Back at CAL from 1949-1952 before being drafted with the 4th Overall pick in the 1953 NFL Draft by the Chicago Cardinals.  Johnny O played for the Cardinals from 1953 – 1957 earning Pro Bowl honors in both 1953 and 1955 and Western Conference first team honors in 1956.

Olszewskiasredskin200_medium

After being dealt to the Washington Redskins in 1958 Johnny O became the ‘Skins primary back for three seasons and was first and only player in Redskin history to wear the number "0".  In 1961 Olszewski played for the Detroit Lions before finishing his career with the Broncos in 1962, helping the Broncos to a 7-7 record, easily their best season in the 60's.

For his ten year pro career, Johnny gained 3,320 yards averaging almost 4 yards per carry and hauled in 104 receptions for 988 yards. He was inducted into the Cal Hall of Fame in 1993 and was named to the Sigma Nu’s All-Century Professional Football team.

Johnny 'O's Broncos Stats --

Rushing    - 33 Car. 144 yards
Receiving - 13 Rec. 150 yards, 1 TD

UPDATE -- Honorable Mention Goes To  - MILES!!!

Officially, only players are eligable, but I'd be remiss if I didn't at least mention the Broncos favorite furry friend.  Hat Tip to loyal MHR reader PSHIN8670 for bringing the oversight to my attention!!

Gotta love a guy who wears a number like that. People dont expect much out of you that way!

Until Terrell Davis makes it into the Hall of Fame, I refuse to acknowledge the existence of such a place other than the Ring of Fame at Mile High!

too bad

the NFL doesn’t allow players to wear ‘0’ or ‘00’ anymore.

He wore "0" because people called him "Johnny O"

You peaked my interest SG, and I discovered that Johnny’s younger sister Tina married UCLA great Manu Tuiasosopo, making Johnny the uncle of current Raider QB Marques Tuiasosopo.

This is an excellent feature, gentlemen

You’ve got some tough decisions to make on a few of these.

Yes it is true

True, Morton led the team to it’s first SB, but we are talking about #7 here. We have a full week before we get to #7, so I’ll wait for next Wednesday.

I’m jazzed up about the great comments that this feature will invoke. Not just talking about a position or who was better at the slot, but something more important. Justifying a Center being greater than a QB, or a Kicker as to who was the Greatest to wear that number? This will be a favorite on a daily basis, and will be at it’s best when we get to certain numbers that a lot of favorites wore. WoW!

The M&M connection was a thing of beauty.

And if it didnt conceive Broncomania, it certainly gave birth to it.

HAHA I love it!

Miles rocks. Sure beats the heck out of KC Wolf and Boltman (who just looks like a HR Pufnstuf reject).

Good call =)
