Okay I know this is a Broncos Website....
.....and I bleed orange and blue allday everyday....I cant get enough when it comes to talking about our Broncos....but I just had to stray off topic for a brief second to say that.....
BARRY SANDERS was SSSIIIIICCCKKKKK!!!!!!
I was just watching NFL films today and thought i would share that with the rest of the community. He was ridiculous...everyday was halloween for him cuz he was a MONSTER...
what I love best are all the comments and quotes his opponents would have during games about him. Will there ever be another Barry Sanders? I think we came close with Quinten Griffin (in size def not in moves or overall ability) but I would love to see another Barry Sanders in the NFL....
I will always remember the day when our own John Lynch (with the Bucs at the time) was standing in the running lane on the LOS with nothing but him there and Barry right in front of him and he missed him COMPLETELY...didnt even graze him...ridiculous.
They showed a clip of Barry popping Rod Woodsons ACL without Rod even touching him...ridiculous moves...
Sorry about taking up this time with randomness.....now I digress :)

I just watched that show too
It made me realize again just how good the guy was. Too bad he gave it up so early. It’s also too bad that the Lions never had enough to go to the playoffs more than they did with Barry.

Barry Sanders was a special talent, but even he couldn't
lift the Lions from its doormat status. 2000 Yards got them a first round exit from the playoffs didn’t it?
TD was different, but more dominant in my opinion. Not only cut he not be stopped, but the Broncos won championships with him. I suppose I just put titles above personal achievments. It’s all for not if you don’t get the trophy at the end of the year.
Or maybe I am just still angry at him for quitting before his time. ;)

barry sanders was the best hands down.
If he was on dallas or denver during the 90’s he would have been running for 2000 yards every year. You gotta remember, he played in the run and shoot offense the incorporated NO FULLBACK OR TIGHT END. He ran his whole career without either. The real LT was quoted as saying ” if they give him a fullback and tight end he will be unstoppable, literally.”

Not the best
Jim Brown is the best!

The best I have ever seen with my own two eyes was
Barry Sanders. Although, Jim Brown was the best of his era no doubt.
I just find it hard to compare running backs from different eras. Maybe we can do a best of each decade? ;)

i forgot to add
that when i hear that jim brown is the best of all time i laugh myself silly. Sanders would have ran for 4000 yards a year if he played in the 60’s. In todays game, jim brown would be a nobody. I would take selvin over him, no joke.

I doubt it...
Don’t get wrong here, Sanders was legit (he got robbed by sharing the MVP with the league’s favorite man-crush, Brett Favre) but he also benefited from running on astro-turf at least nine games of the season. In the sixties teams would have saturated the field the night before and not cut the grass that week and Barry would have had zero footing to make those cuts. Butkus would have tore his head off. Small backs had a hard time making a living in the NFL back then and they had to have the ability to lay some wood on a linebacker and run through tackles (like Floyd Little for example). I think Barry could have played because he was just too talented but I doubt 2000 yards a season would be realistic and I think his career would have been shorter. But as Zappa said, comparing players from different decades is pretty tough to do and reserved for Madden NFL games.
Elway is in, Zimm is in but don't forget: Floyd Little, Randy Gradishar, Steve Atwater & Terrel Davis

Forgot to add
Didn’t Soldier Field have astro-turf for most of Sanders’ career as well? So that would make at least ten games running on carpet.

I agree with you 100% Idaho.
Jim Brown was a man among boys. He made the best in the business, big, strong, fast, tough men, look like amateurs. Speed, Power, Elusiveness. He was the complete package.
Sanders was great, a special talent. I think he would have done well back in Browns era, but he was a bit small and the game was really, I mean really tough. He would have taken a pounding. Who knows, his career might have been shorter.

Thats just plain ignorant.
You have no idea what you are talking about. The NFL was a run driven league in the 60’s. CB’s could kill WR’s and defenses were designed to stop the run. PLUS there were no domes and fake ass grass. Go love Barry all you what I dont care, but to say He would have rushed for 4000 in season is dumb and ignorant and proves some people have no idea what they are talking about

Remember clothesline tackles.
It was legal to tackle an RB by chopping him across the adams apple with your forearm as he ran by you at full speed. I had that happen to me a couple of times (obviously not at that level). Your head comes to a sudden stop. Your throat feels like it got crushed. Your feet fly out in front of you. You flop hard on your back and maybe get the air knocked out of you to boot. You feel like something is stuck half way down your throat for weeks.
It was a really tough game.
If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

Heck ya
I liked this fact that Brown ran for less 1000 yards twice, once in his rookie season he 942 yards in 12 games then again in 1962 he had 996 yards. His worst YPC ever at 4.3. Thats amazing. Tough strong, and left the NFL as the all time leading rusher in 1965 that stood until 10/7/1984. almost a FULL 20 season. Now thats amazing

Happened to me in rugby all of the time.
I’m not joking here; I honestly feared I was going to die a few times. It’s amazing that more clothesline tackles don’t result in death.

your a bafoon.
players in the 60’s were slow and drank beer all offseason. Players were running 5.8 forty yard dashes literally. There wouldnt be a player in the league that could even lay a finger on him in the open field. He would dance circles around Butkis. Get a clue

THE BEST, hands down in my humble opinion...
Bo Jackson. No RB scared me more. I’ll go even further and say he was THE BEST athlete of the century and the best RB to ever carry the rock. I know his PT role hurts him in these types of discussions/debates, but when I tell my kids about the best, he’s the one.
I wish Woody Paige was our coach!

Everyone remembers
Him running over an overrated Bosworth and the 91 yards TD run. BFD!!! He was a good athlete but not even close to the best. I am with Diehard on this

he is def the best athlete of all time.
And he didnt even train for football. He was a baseball player playing football. In october when baseball was over, he would literally throw on pads and play football.

If you can read, I would suggest doing a little research
Instead of baseing a statement on only what you have seen, I would suggest you do some research on a guy named Jim Thorpe. Sounds like you probably have never heard of him.
After Thorpe their are dozens more that did way more than Bo. The truth is – that Bo really didn’t know. Sorry to burst the bubble.

Walter Peyton
Soldier Field had grass and Sweetness believed that it was cowardly to run out of bounds. I also loved Sanders, but it was also true that the ‘turf helped him and that the evolution of the game changed defenses in a big way.
Butkus was unbelieveably quick, sideline to sideline. I’ll never forget the Saturday night he was on two canes, barely able to walk, but achieved 21 unassisted tackles the next day. He was something to see.

You're comparing apples with oranges
and being unfair to boot in denigrating the stars of yesteryear compared to today’s players. The only reasonable comparison is how dominant a player is in his own time. A lineman of the fifties or sixties would be fifty or sixty pounds lighter than today’s linemen and slower to boot, but if you transplanted past stars to the present they’d be faster and bigger. They’d have access to the same training methods and nutritional conditions as today’s players, and would still have the intense drive that made them the best of their time. You can’t just say “if he were playing today” about a player and not assume that he’d have all the advantages today’s players have. You can’t have it both ways. Conversely, an ordinary 320 pound lineman would also be ordinary if he played in the sixties. He wouldn’t necessarily be way bigger and faster than the players of that era, because he wouldn’t be able to take modern training methods, huge staffs, special diets, etc. back in time with him.
