2008 Denver Broncos - Breaking Down The Roster -- Defensive Tackle

D-Rob will still have a chance to get to Brady

Last season the Broncos entered Training Camp with the beef necessary to make an impact in the AFC West.  Or so we thought.  Sam Adams, Jimmy Kennedy, Gerard Warren and others were going to stop the run, create havoc in the back field and make life miserable for opposing quarterbacks.  Too bad Defensive Coordinator Jim Bates never got the message.  Before the season started, Warren was so expendable the Broncos traded him to the Raiders and Kennedy was simply thrown on the trash heap for the like of Antwon Burton.  It didn't take long to show those moves, and the entire defensive interior, were a complete train wreck.

Even now the stats are hard to look at.  Only two teams  - Oakland and Miami - gave up more yards on the ground than the Broncos in 2007.  The 2282 yards allowed on the ground were nearly twice the amount given up by the Minnesota Vikings, who led the NFL in Rush defense(1185).  While the defensive tackles can't take all the blame, there was certainly enough to go around, it is safe to say the group was a major disappointment.

If the Broncos are going to improve in 2008 it has to start at DT.  It is a young group, with only two players with more than 2 years experience, but it is a group filled with talent as well.  In my mind this group comes into Training Camp with the biggest question mark attached to their back.  No one really knows what we are going to get.  Every team has those question marks somewhere, that's were a little luck comes in.  The Broncos need a few breaks to fall in their favor.  A group of defensive tackles that exceed expectations is one of them.  Let's break 'em down --

Star-divide

Drobertson_medium

DEWAYNE ROBERTSON (6-1, 308 / 6th Year)

Why waste time or mince words.  If the Broncos interior defense is going to even think about being respectable it has to start with the most talented player getting the job done.  Dewayne Robertson is that guy.  The Broncos acquired Robertson for a bag of shoulder pads and end zone markers but the expectation are for the former Top 4 pick to make a big-time contribution to the Broncos run defense.

Questions abound about Robertson and his health, yet the man with the chronic knee problems has missed only three games during his first 5 years in the league.  Last season, playing for a bad team, in a defensive scheme that apparently didn't fit his skills all that well, Robertson played over 75% of the Jets defensive snaps and arguably had the best statistical season of his career.

I will say I believe the concerns about Robertson's health are real and certainly valid.  I expect the Broncos to tread very carefully with there new toy and even in the middle of the season expect Robertson to see somewhere between 55-60% of the defensive snaps.  Keeping Robertson fresh and on the field for 17 weeks is going to be a huge priority and if the Broncos run defense shows improvement I guarantee that Dewayne Robertson is right in the middle of it.

2007 Season Notes:  Robertson played all 16 games (15 starts) for the fourth time in his career, posting career highs in tackles (74) and sacks (4) for the Jets... Ranked fifth on the team (second among defensive linemen) in tackles and second on the club in sacks... Saw time on 75.4 percent of New York’s defensive snaps... Added one fumble recovery for the year... Registered a season-high eight tackles (2 solo) vs. Buf. (10/28) before matching that total a week later vs. Was. (11/4)... Had a personal-best 2.5 sacks vs. Pit. (11/18) for the second multiple-sack game of his career... Recorded his fourth sack of the season, setting a personal best, at Dal. (11/22)... Notched eight stops (3 solo) at N.E. (12/16)... Recovered a fumble at Ten. (12/23) and had four tackles against the Titans.

Mthomasphoto_medium
MARCUS THOMAS (6-3, 305 / 2nd Year)

Perhaps the one player that will benefit the most from a presence like Dewayne Robertson is Thomas who has similar talent but needs to keep his head on straight.  The Broncos took a chance on Thomas, trading away their 3rd round pick in the 2008 draft to move up in the 4th round in '07.  We all know the story - lots of talent, couldn't stay off the hippie lettuce, kicked off the Florida Gators, etc - a story that added a new chapter this off-season with a recently dropped drug charge.  Thomas has used the latest case of bad judgement as a wake up call and has avoided the spotlight, and his hometown of Jacksonville, FL, during the summer.

On the field Thomas showed glimpses during his rookie campaign of why the Broncos, and many draftniks, were so high on him.  Defensive tackle is usually a position that takes young players a little time to make an impact, and it was no different for Thomas, but it was easy to see the talent was there.  Of course, there's that back flip Thomas pulled off during training camp last season as well

I am looking for Thomas to make a jump in his 2nd season and to team up with Robertson to create a formidable 1-2 punch in the middle for the Broncos.  The only thing that will keep Thomas from becoming a solid Pro is Thomas himself.  A couple near-misses and second chances seem to have Thomas on that road.  That can only be good news for the Broncos.

2007 Season Notes:  Selected by the Broncos in the fourth round (121st overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft, Thomas played all 16 games (5 starts) as a rookie, totaling 30 tackles (17 solo), one interception (-2 yds.), one pass breakup and one fumble recovery... Started each of Denver’s final four games... Joined Atlanta defensive tackle Trey Lewis as one of two rookie defensive linemen in the NFL to record an interception... Was one of four Broncos to record at least one interception and one fumble recovery... Made his NFL debut at Buf. (9/9) and had two tackles (1 solo) on defense while also seeing action on special teams... Posted the first interception of his NFL career vs. Oak. (9/16) when he caught a Josh McCown pass that bounced off John Lynch’s shoulder pads... Also had one tackle against the Raiders... Shared the lead among the defensive linemen with four tackles at Ind. (9/30)... Assisted on two tackles in his first pro start—replacing Amon Gordon—on Sunday Night Football vs. Pit. (10/21)... Recorded three tackles (2 solo) at K.C. (11/11) to help limit the Chiefs to 67 yards on 22 carries (3.0 avg.)... Contributed three tackles (2 solo) on Monday Night Football vs. Ten. (11/19)... Registered four tackles (3 solo) and one fumble recovery on Monday Night Football at S.D. (12/24).

Amckinleyphoto_medium
ALVIN MCKINLEY (6-3, 294 / 9th Year)

By far the most "seasoned" veteran of the group, McKinley may not possess impressive numbers but McKinley's value goes alot further than tackles and sacks.  Like many of the Broncos D-linemen McKinley is a 'tweener, playing both inside and outside depending on the situation.  It is a valuable asset to have unless you find yourself with a team of them.  With Robertson and Thomas the real deal at tackle, guys like McKinley, Josh Mallard and Tim Crowder will have the ability to move around depending on the situation.

Depending on how things shake down during training camp and the pre-season, McKinley could be the odd man out.  The Broncos always has a surprise or two on the final cut list and McKinley fits the bill.  An aging vet that most fans think will add valuable experience to a young group gets picked over for even younger players.  That has been the M.O. in the past.  If McKinley does make the cut he will play a critical roll.  When I break down the D-End group I will give my thoughts on the entire D-Line.  For now, we'll assume McKinley has a place on roster.  If that happens, the Broncos know they'll get 110% each and every play.  McKinley plays alot bigger than his size and always finds a way to the ball.  Solild in the locker room, you can never have too many Alvin McKinley's to go around.

2007 Season Notes:  McKinley played 15 games (10 starts) in his first year with Denver, recording 28 tackles (16 solo) and 2.5 sacks (12.5 yds.)... Registered three tackles (2 solo), including a 4-yard sack, vs. Jac. (9/23)... Recorded four solo tackles and one sack on Sunday Night Football vs. Pit. (10/21)... Tied for the lead among defensive linemen with three tackles (2 solo) at Det. (11/4)... Posted three tackles (1 solo), including half a sack (4.5 yds.), vs. Min. (12/30)... Teamed with Jamie Winborn to drop Tarvaris Jackson for a 9-yard sack in overtime.

Sharrisphoto_medium
STEVEN HARRIS (6-5, 305 / 2nd Year)

Steven Harris is the most intriguing figure on the D-Line.  At 6-5/305, Harris possesses excellent size.  As a teammate of Marcus Thomas at Florida, it was Harris that won the Outstanding Lineman Award as a senior.

Coming in as an undrafted free agent, Harris was able to see action in 4 games and showed some potential.  The critical thing for Harris will be if he can make positive strides from year 1 to year 2.  If he can, and shows the Broncos that he has longterm growth potential, it could come at the expense of an aging player like McKinley.  There is just something about Harris I really like and will have my eye on him in Training Camp.

2007 Season Notes:  Harris saw time in the Broncos' final four games of the year as a rookie, totaling six tackles (2 solo) and one fumble recovery... Began the year on the Broncos’ practice squad before he joined their active roster on Dec. 5... Made his professional debut vs. K.C. (12/9), assisting on a tackle and recovering a fumble... Ended the Chiefs’ final drive of the game when he recovered quarterback Brodie Croyle’s fumble forced by Josh Mallard... Added three tackles (2 solo) at Hou. (12/13) before assisting on tackles in each of the season’s final two games at S.D. (12/24) and vs. Min. (12/30).

Jmallardphoto_medium
JOSH MALLARD (6-2, 265 / 4th Year)

Mallard joined the Broncos during the roster purge of 2007.  It seemed like every week the Broncos were cutting guys and bringing new players in, especially on defense.  Mallard was impressive in the limited action he received, showing a good motor and playing hard while not having a ton of time to prepare.

I'll leave Mallard's future with the Broncos up to your discussion.  To be honest, if Mallard is one of the 53 best players on the Broncos roster, we may have some problems.  Search out your feelings, you know this to be true!

2007 Season Notes:  Mallard joined the Broncos as a free agent on Nov. 6 after playing in three games with Atlanta (did not record any statistics)... Played 11 games for the year, including his eight contests with Denver, and registered 20 tackles (15 solo), 3.5 sacks (7.5 yds.), one pass breakup and one forced fumble... Ranked third on Denver with 3.5 sacks... Made his Broncos debut at K.C. (11/11) and had two tackles in that contest... Contributed two solo tackles, one sack (first as a Bronco), one pass breakup and one forced fumble vs. K.C. (12/9)... Added three tackles, including one sack (3 yds.), on Monday Night Football at S.D. (12/24)... Posted a careerhigh 1.5 sacks in a four-tackle effort vs. Min. (12/30).

Cpowellphoto_medium
CARLTON POWELL (6-3, 300 / Rookie)

Cpowellstats_medium

The big want among Broncos fans the entire off-season leading up to the draft was a Defensive Tackle.  Several names were tossed around only to have each one plucked away on draft day.  The Broncos finally got their man in the 5th Round, taking Carlton Powell from Va. Tech.  While Powell may not have been a household name, everything I have seen and heard from and about this kid is positive.

While not spectacular at any one thing, Powell is solid in all areas and should provide solid depth.  While I won't go as far as to expect big things from Powell something tells me not to be surprised if he comes right in and makes a big impact.  Solid guys usually find a way.

2007 Season Notes:  Powell played 14 games (13 starts) as a senior for Virginia Tech, helping the Hokies post top-5 national rankings in scoring defense (3rd - 16.1 ppg.), total defense (4th - 296.9 ypg.) and rushing defense (5th - 86.6 ypg.) while earning a berth in the Orange Bowl... Totaled career highs in tackles (39 / 11 solo) and sacks (3.5-22 yds.)... Credited with making seven tackles in the red zone and had at least four stops in four games.

Now it's your turn.  What do you think about the Broncos' D-Tackle situation??

I will go back and read the rest, but I just had to comment on something real quick...

I love this double pun by Guru about Marcus Thomas.

On the field Thomas showed glimpses during his rookie campaign of why the Broncos, and many draftniks, were so high on him.

Is that great or what?!? I am still rolling!!! LOL

Guru

I would like to, at this time, thankyou for this special site. For years I have sought for what is happening with the Broncos…and here it is!! When the net became a fact.-all but a few in the mainline papers, except Kliss (for the last few years), seemed negative. Looking for something wrong is what the mainline media knows. The mainline media feeds on it-bad things—they know nothing of love.

Guru, What you have done is so special. Even Idiots like myself can have fun and sometimes make a post.

Guru, HT, styg, mdierk, thankyou!

Zappa 13-3 baby lets hope for it.

Heck ya! 13-3 baby!!!

I think Guru and the rest of us all realize that we can be positive, but not delusionally so. We still analyze our teams weaknesses and shortcomings, but we are careful not to dwell on the obvious all the time like the MSM does. We talked about Cutler’s diabeties for about week after the story broke, but after that it was time to move on…yet the MSM is still talking about!!! lol That’s the thing about MHR and a few other quality fan blogs out there, we focus on the here and now. Whether it be negative or positive…

And your no idiot, you are a respected contributer and I am sure most everyone here would agree with me. :)

DTs

I recently did a writeup on another forum in which I put Robertson, Thomas, Powell and McKinley as our DTs for this season, but after considering the fact that we kept 5 last season I’m leaning towards including one more. And I’m open to persuasion regarding McKinley, and I think you might be right about him not making the roster, SportsGuru.

I had originally added Mallard, who, despite his lack of bulk, which would have disqualified him at the beginning of last year, still makes a surprising number of big plays. The other member, who I’ve just finally begun to recognize as a worthy roster addition, is Harris. Harris always struck me as a throw-in CFA, and I never gave him the recognition he deserved. His production last year marks him as one of the best DTs.

So there we have it, and your comments have moved me to replace McKinley with Harris.
1.) Robertson
2.) Thomas
3.) Mallard
4.) Harris
5.) Powell

It’s a young group of DTs, and I wouldn’t give them much more than a C+, but they’ve got a lot of growth potential. One thing that does help is not having the Bates size criterion for DTs. I admit to endorsing the Bates scheme enthusiastically at the beginning of the season, but I’m very happy to see them go back to something more like what they had been doing.

I'm on board.

I don’t have a well thought out opinion on this, but your list is the one I like too. I think Robertson and Thomas are the obvious top 2 at this point. Beyond that, we have to assume we keep Powell as he seemed to be brought in to help stop the run and we have to start keeping and developing our rookies. I like Mallard. He is definitely undersized compared to his teammates, but he statistically has good production. If we can get some pressure and sacks from the DT position, coupled with what should be an excellent edge pass rush with DOOM and Williams, I’ll feel much better about matching up against the likes of NE and Indy. Let’s toss Harris in there because he was on the same team as Jarvis Moss and Marcus Thomas. How cool is it to have 3 guys who played together on the same line in college, went into the draft the same year, all play together on the same line in the pros?

More on DTs

I’m still thinking about the DTs, and I was another one of the people who thought it would be nice to take a DT fairly high in the draft, preferably around the 3rd (although we had no 3rd) or 4th round.

I take SG’s comment under Mallard’s profile seriously:

”-..I’ll leave Mallard’s future with the Broncos up to your discussion. To be honest, if Mallard is one of the 53 best players on the Broncos roster, we may have some problems.” – TheSportsGuru

Yes, indeed we do. And even my C+ rating for the group may be a little high (blame grade inflation). I may not rate Mallard as low as SG appears to do, but I doubt we’re far apart, and it does say something about our DT situation. Mallard is the kinda guy you’d like to have on your roster, but only when you’ve got star DTs in front of him. The problem isn’t Mallard, so to speak, it’s the entire depth chart at DT. Because of this, I don’t know if we can view the DTs as a complete group yet.

I don’t want to see the weekly changes that occurred during the season last year, but I do think the staff is going to be paying special attention to who’s cut at the end of pre-season. Other than Thomas, Robertson & Powell, none of the DTs is assured of permanent position unless they distinguish themselves on-the-field. It’s not so much a knock against Mallard, Harris, et al, who may be performing above their heads at the time, but a recognition that the Broncos need to get better at that position.

The Broncos should get better in part because of their dropping of the Bates scheme, and I’m not down on that scheme but the results speak for themselves. If the Broncos had the personnel for the Bates scheme then it would be a different story—but they don’t. Some of the DTs may stick around based on their potential, such as Harris, but I expect the staff will continue to look for answers at DT until they get the production they’re looking for. And the top 4 or 5 DTs on the depth chart on opening day may not tell us much about who will be at that position down the road.

Because of the uncertainty at DT there may be some novel solutions employed. Last year’s scheme called for a lot of substitution, and I expect that pattern will continue. Having new DTs in the game helps keep them fresh but it doesn’t make them better than they’re capable of. One of the solutions that we’ve seen in this year’s mini-camp is to move Ekuban inside on passing downs. I like that idea. Another player who has the potential to help is Peterson, since he’s listed as a DL and can play both the DT and DE positions. I also expect that there will be a considerable amount of scheming to help shore up the production deficits at DT.

Whatever the Broncos do, I expect that the story at DT is far from over.

I saw that backflip in person last year...

It was ridiculous…

I really hope some of our DTs have had the time they need to develop. If so we could be looking at something really special over the next couple of years.

Moving Josh Mallard to Middle Linebacker

I had just a thought….maybe more so for conversation. After watching Mallard play at DT last season, based on his hustle and perseverance, would Mallard perhaps be better suited to play middle linebacker?

At 6’2-265, he’s too small to be a DT (IMHO), but has the size and strength to shed blockers as a linebacker! I think he’s been playing out of position his entire NFL career.

Mallard may not have the speed and agility to be an every down Middle Linebacker…....however, I believe he could provide much needed size/weight at the MLB spot.

I second that "no".

Actually, I wouldn't be against a try . . .

Mallard is very fast for a DL and decent for a MLB with a 4.69 40 time, according to CoachScout (http://www.couchscout.com/dnvr.htm). If the guy could read offenses and fill holes, his size would be devastating there.

IMHO.

Down Year

The Broncos will end up in 3rd place in the west this year, behind the raiders and chargers. No matter what the D-Line does, this team and their fans are in for a long season! There are many more holes on this team than just the D-Line. Safety, a real #2 receiver, O-Line, RB (although they will probably be ok) LB’s, and a field goal kicker are all concerns. On top of all that you have a coach who hasn’t been an aggressive play caller in about 5 years! Everything is pointing to a down season for the broncos and the broncos faithful.

this coming from a fan

whose team has won 19 games in 5 years. Who DLine is probably the worst in the nfl

D-Line is all you can argue?

D-Line for the raiders was TERRIBLE!!!! TERRIBLE I repeat. The entire defense for the raiders was terrible! If you look at it the raiders gave up 5.6 more yards per game on defense and they even let up more points per game! Oh no wait, they didn’t my mistake. Yes the raiders D-Line was very bad because they were on the field so much! This year since we actually have weapons on offense we SHOULD be able to sustain some longer drives and that should help the defense stay off the field. Hopefully D-Mac will be the best player the raiders could’ve gotten for the defense. He should be able to pick up some first downs that they couldn’t get last year. So we’ve talked about the D-Line, what can you say about O-Line, LB’s, K, S??? The Raiders have holes, EVERYONE knows that but if you look at schedule, and the talent on the offensive and now defensive side of the ball, the raiders just stand a better chance to finish above the broncos this year. Now about the 19 wins in the last 5 years, you can’t be anymore true than that. They’ve never ever been this bad, its got to stop some time. That some time should be this year.

by RaiderTEE on Jul 12, 2008 11:56 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I think the raiders have the players to show improvement.

I also think that they have paid too much in terms of value and return. Either way, it is much harder to improve from four wins, and particularly several seasons of such. Denver’s 7 wins is one of the worst years in the last 30 years, but still not bad in terms of how much we need to improve (relative to the raiders).

I see improvement for both oak and Den, and possibly KC (depending on what their QB does this year). SD should keep up the high level of play for at least another 1 or 2 years. I expect Denver to catch and/or pass SD in the West in ‘09.

SURE they do

Have an inexperienced QB, and weak WR corp. The best you can say is they have talent on the offensive side of the Ball. Beside McFadden who has never carried the ball in the NFL, I would say the best offensive threat is Vargas. But do not take my word for it. Use Sapp who called Oakland the worst run organization in sports (I am paraphrasing). The real HC is in a press box calling down every 15 minutes. Until there is one true HC this team will fail. Denver has almost the same schedule as Oakland and a better team not to mention a better HC. So keep dreaming that Oakland will somehow win 7 games this year. It isnt going to happen. But be grateful that KC doesnt have a Qb on their roster. That give the faders an inside shot at 3rd place

Another awesome post from the great Guru Roster Breakdown series.

Whenever I have a question about a position in the preseason, I defer to the great one. I’ve been waiting for the DT post, and it clears up a lot of questions I’ve had about the roster direction.

Now if only we can get Mustard (at TE) to heal quick enough to change Guru’s mind!

(The McKinley reasoning took me by surprise, but it makes total sense. I hope he can manage a spot somehow).

And ditto. Blockers never get the respect they deserve. I guess everybody’s watching the ball and just forgets about them.

by Colinski on Jul 12, 2008 5:09 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Remember...

Yeah they have talent on offense, they have a returning 1000 yard rusher (denver doesn’t) they have the most explosive player from this year’s draft (denver doesn’t) they have a TE that caught more passes than ALL of your WR’s (other than Marshall). Their receivers consist of Walker (he’s a train wreck) Curry (who is solid, he too caught more balls than ALL of your WR’s with the exception of Marshall) and Drew Carter (caught 2 less balls than Stokley). Remember that we didn’t have a “stable” QB either, and we caught all those balls with 64 less attempts. So yes I would say they have talent, will they put it all together, I’m not sure. Now with your comment on who on the raiders has carried the ball in the NFL? Fargas has more attempts running the ball in his career than all of your current RB’s put together besides Michael Pittman. With the HC being in the pressbox I’m thinking the last 10 years hasn’t been too terrible, I mean the raiders do have more than one playoff win and have actually been to the super bowl. Although they did play more like the 4 bronco teams who’ve lost in the big game rather than the 3 raider teams that have won the big one but oh well. Enough about the past, if you look at the schedules they are pretty similar but the raiders don’t have to play JAX or CLEV or go on the road to the Jets. Those 3 games right there will be pretty tough. Like it really matters but the raiders play N.E. at home whereas the broncos have to travel across the country to play them, but like I said I’m pretty sure that doesn’t matter. Now about what Sapp said, most players that retire with a bad team will trash the team. Sapp also said that right after he won the super bowl with Gruden, it was Gruden who actually put them over the top and without him they wouldn’t have won. Then when he left Tampa he said that Gruden didn’t do anything for that team, that Dungy put it all together and Gruden just rode the wave. I take everything Sapp says with a grain of salt. Its been good talking some football with you, but you still haven’t answered my questions, what are the broncos going to do at S, #2WR, O-Line, K, LB’s???

You use the word 'besides' a lot

Nice to have you on the site, though. Use stats and reasoning and stick around.

OK, for every QB you have a learning curve. That’s going to happen to yours. He’s big, strong, and after that, we’ll see – no one, on either side of the coin, can know. Cutler is more seasoned and very talented, currently healthy. Point Broncs

Oline – Well, barring unknown injuries, Denver’s is better. Similar scheme, Nalen, Clady, etc. More experience, more talent, better stats. Point Broncs

WR – You keep saying other than Marshall, but when one guy pulls in over 100 passes, those stats are easy to fake if you drop him. The Broncs use a blocking tight end approach most of the time. Javon has one good, then an awful year (before bolting ffor a new team). He might do well this year, but he’s a terrible head case. Stokley is the best slot reciever in the game. I like Curry, but if he does too well, Javon pouts. Call it even. Most Broncs guys don’t agree – heck, I don’t – but for the sake of letting you have a desperately needed tie…

Running – IF you drop Henry’s stats for the first four games…oh, but you can’t. Young did fine as a slasher caught being a power runner, but he’s stronger, has a year behind him. It’s easy to say ‘the most explosive player from this year’s draft’ (oh, yawn). A lot of experts equate him to Bush of New Orleans, too, and time will tell. I like Fargas, but don’t get ahead of yourself. Sorry, son, but even at best. Watch out for ‘Train

LB – DJ Williams is one of the finest LB in the game and has just gotten to his natural position. Boss Bailey needs to prove durability and that the scheme suits him. Niko is a Qmark, but a danged interesting one. Winborn? Read the post. Point Broncos

And, you need a bone. Point Raiders on Safeties.

HC? Do the math, don’t make us laugh….And don’t discount the issues of Kiffen’s axe hanging over him during the 2nd half of the season, nor the effect that can have on a team. And hey, if you are happy with your last 10 years and you’re drug free, I admire you. Point Broncs on HC, another on quality of organization. Game, set, match.

Keep posting – glad to have you aboard

There’s only two games between us a year, and we might split them, but look at the Broncos schedule in the 2nd half of the season.

Good points but...

These two teams played two times last year against each other right? Combined score was 54-43. Point raiders.
Key loses for the broncos
-Lepsis O-Line
-Elam (the team MVP from last season) K
-Myers O-Line
-Henry RB
Those are going to be two guys on the o-line you’re really going to miss, if you don’t think so ask Cutler when he’s being picked up from the ground by Old Man Winter himself Tom Nalen or his just as old teammate Casey Wigmann. You know if one or both of those guys go down the season will end right then and there! Elam, what can I say? He won how many games for you last year? Including one against the raiders! I’ll tell you what, I was the happiest guy in the world to see him go! So point for the raiders in kicking and I’ll say you still win on O-Line, although we turned out a 1000 yard rusher that only started 7 games last year.
D-Line is a push, we both have one guy that can rush the QB and nobody that can stop the run. If your rookies play well and if our free agents play well I still see it being pretty even. Williams at LB is awesome (not so much last year but he’s where he belongs this year). That is only 1/3 though. The 2 others are huge question marks! The raiders on the other hand have awesome young LB’s that actually make plays! Thomas Howard himself had 6 INTS and 2 TD’s. Kirk Morrison added 4 more INTS and 95 tackles. Our third LB is ok but the 2 I mentioned before gives us the point for sure! So point raiders. I gotta run right now but I’ll be on later to see what you have to say. Talk to you guys later…

Lepsis and such

Nice points as well, whether I disagree or not.

Lepsis had a truly terrible year last year. When he retired he said that he was appalled at how he played, so I can’t give you the point on him. Clady seems to be a huge (pun intended) improvement. He’ll make his rookie mistakes, but still – an upgrade.

I agree with you on Myers. Sad to see him go, but the team did feel that they had better options, and that interests me. Nalen – shucks, what do you say about Nails? Yes, if he and Wiegmann go down, we’ll lose ground. Still – Myers took over, and pretty well, and they still let him go. We have pretty high hopes on ‘Steiger. Looks a like a young beast. Short arms, nasty streak. Hmm – sounds familiar.

LB – You know, Bailey has played well. Lousy situation in Detroit, he got moved too much, and I like him more than some folks although he certainly has sumething to prove. So does Niko, granted, but while I like Morrison and Howard, our level of depth as well as skill is higher, overall. So, which is better, two players but not much else, or DJ, 2 Q’s and a high level of depth? We’ll see as the season goes on. Fun discussion, though.

You always miss guys like Elam, and I hated to see him go. There’s a point to be made, though – he was losing his accuracy on mid to long kicks. He later won us a game or two that his misses left us behind from. Age comes to us all, even kickers. Will the new guy do as well? Don’t know that either.

That’s a fun thing on the Broncs and the Raiders – so many unaswered questions. Your squad has a lot farther to go in making it to .500 though. It would be tough, even with a favorable schedule. But if you didn’t believe, you wouldn’t be a fan, right?

Last thing – I don’t think that we’ll miss Henry. Between injury and his suspension problems, the guy who was leading the league for 4 games turned into a huge liability, and that had become his MO.
...”we turned out a 1000 yard rusher that only started 7 games last year” No question. Shaky O line personnel, still did OK. I said it before – I like Fargas. Your ground game will be OK. Run DMZ has a lot to prove.

Thanks for the chat – welcome to MHR!

definitely, the big Q

how many do we keep? i’d really like to keep mckinley for veteran, stability, injury concerns. i’m not comfortable with powell or harris starting in such an event. mallard, i thought, was pretty impressive in his 1/2 a season here. do we have the luxury of keeping a prs, though? harris i know little about, so if he earns a spot and can contribute this year, so be it. if not, practice squad. keeping my fingers crossed with d-rob and thomas, and still waiting for a capable veteran when the cuts begin. wow, lots of questions, big decisions needed to be made here. the preseason should iron most of this out

Good writeup, Guru . . .

But what happened to Peterson? Did you forget him?

He may have a chance to be a decent backup . . .

Conclusion...

We’ve reached a stalemate! Its going to have to be shown on the field. The two teams on paper seem to be fairly even. Its going to come down to how they all play together during the games. Look at the Rockies, good looking team on paper but just can’t put it all together on the field all the time. I’ll be checking back from time to time to stir the pot a bit. Thanks for the intelligent conversation and not being an ignorant fan with no sense of what you’re saying. It shows there are still some smart bronco fans still out there. For a second I thought you guys were extinct. Have a good one…

Roll on September!

I guess week one will clear up that stalemate! We’ll certainly see who is in better shape when it comes down to sixty minutes of action.

I'm definitely still worried at DT..

but we’ll see. I think we’ll be ok there, prob finishing at #15 against the run. Play the run OK, get after the passer and get some picks and we’ll be fine.
