Jeremy Green of ESPN.com.... nuff said

ESPN.com is at it again.  Their Scouts, Inc group has been chronically underrating our guys of late, and here is a real gem.

Star-divide

Lee(Phoenix, AZ): Yes or no. The Broncos will have a winning season this year.

SportsNation Jeremy Green: Oh, no. They've done horrible drafting. Brandon Marshall, even though I think can develop into a No. 1, is the most immature player on their roster. They cut their RB. I think the Broncos are not even better than the Raiders. They are closer to being a bad team than to being a playoff team right now.

Above is a quote from Jeremy "I talk furiously with my hands and look like a total clown on TV" Green.  It was in an Insider chat he did on ESPN.com today, so I pasted the text.  This is the link if you are a subscriber, and can access it.

They've done horrible drafting?  How does this clown have a job at the Worldwide Leader?  Did he miss 2006?  Cutting Travis Henry was a bad move?  Brandon Marshall isn't already a legit Number 1 receiver?  This is such a bunch of nonsense.    Did you all know we project to have the worst running game in the NFL?  Scouts, Inc says so, so it must be true.  (Also, we project to have the worst D-Line in the NFL, according to them.

Really I would say our team done very well the past three drafts.  I think this guy has no credibility, as a failed former scout.  If he was really any good, he'd be employed somewhere by now, 3 years after getting whacked by the Browns.  His only thing to cling to is being Dennis Green's son.  We'll have to remind him of these words after the season I guess.  That would be some mea culpa if Zappa is right and our guys go 13-3.  Even going 9-7, we can feel free to remind the world that this guy is a joke.  Viva ESPN!

Green is at the top of my list

He’s Scouts Inc’s AFC West rep, but he absolutely hates the Broncos.

What do you expect from ESPN?

They did hire Bill Williamson after all.

What a hack

Another in a long line of BSPN “analysts” who talk just to hear themselves speak.

WOW

they arent even giving us a chance to prove them wrong(which we will)”I think the Broncos are not even better than the raiders.”thats hilarious how much are they paying this guy?

by broncofan91 on Jul 19, 2008 12:31 AM MDT   0 recs

I call it the "sports-talkification" of everything...

why? because a real “scout” or “expert” would offer real football analysis. BMarsh is immature. Okay, so are about 25% of the league. Can he play? Didn’t he pretty much ascend to our #1 wideout slot with nary a fight last year. He’s one of THE best YAC receivers in the game.

We cut our RB! Egads, get out. Did you know that? Seriously, said “RB” was oft-injured, troubled with drug issues and demonstrated that he wasn’t with the program this off-season. Again, when have we ever had serious problems running the ball?

Ugh..ESPN should only let Jaws and Steve Young provide analysis.

I wish Woody Paige was our coach!

Elitism in "sports-talk"

Good points BC, and it reminds me of a dynamic that you see rampant in the humanities and how they are taught at the higher levels.

Philosophy is a great example, and Immanuel Kant is the ultimate archetype of this phenomenon. He wrote a book called “Critique of Pure Reason” that redefined philosophy from the ground up, and created a whole new facet of modern culture that exists to this day, and he did it by a process of obfuscation that seems very similar (though radically more complex) to what sports “analysts” of today engage in. In philosophy, Kant discussed ideas in a way that made them inaccessible to a rational, logical individual, and when the individual says “that doesn’t make sense” Kant’s answer was, “Well, that is part of your problem, you want things that make sense.” By foisting the burden of proof onto those trying to understand him, he turned philosophy on its head, and it hasn’t recovered (in higher learning institutions, at any rate). “Analysts” of Kant’s work tend to know very little about human nature and human cognition, and contradict the facts in those areas with their attempts to teach and explain Kant’s ideas. They are taking a short-cut to esteem among their peers, and the respect of their students by creating an abyss between what people know and what they “should know” and positing themselves as the only ones who “get it”.

Sports “analysts” seem to be doing the same thing. These are guys that don’t really know very much about what they are talking about, but they have mastered the art of talking about it. They speak in ways that make it inaccessible to rational people and focus on “talk-show” elements like personal attacks, and sensationalism. Their goal seems to be fooling their peers into respecting them (ironic, because most of their peers are doing the same thing), since it is obvious none of them care what fans know or think. (This actually makes sense, since to have a job it is not you or I that they have to fool into thinking they know what they are doing, but their peers. It is a secondhanded mode of survival for them.)

Sadly, guys like Jaws, TJ and Young get pulled down in that undertow, and even torn down in some instances, since actual knowledge is a direct threat to the throne of cards that guys like Greene are building for themselves. All with the blessing of the network clowns. Something tells me that guys like Young and Jaws take their scotch neat…out of necessity.

Amen, Styg-

and nice refference to Kant. I completely agree with your analysis but wonder when the divide between the talking heads and their listening audience will become great enough to create either indifference or rejection on the part of the audience. It really is a shame to see good talent brought down to that level. At least TJ, Jaws, Young, and Collingsworth(my addition) haven’t reached Emmit Smith like levels yet.

Agreed 100%

I think we see it in philosophy, but sadly, I ran into it in the “hard” sciences as well. It’s a sad time in higher education in many fields, where fields have been made political (both left and right) and ideas have become “immune” to rational challenges by students or aspiring teachers. It happens in fields as diverse as physics, social work, economics, philosophy, and psychology.

Part of the problem is a culture in education that is, for lack of a better word, “lazy”. We have a high number of doctorates today, and the degree once meant meant something that was rare. They are a dime a dozen today.

Another is the protection that we afford to profs who aren’t qualified to teach (not because of crazy ideas, which I’m ok with, but because of little or no qualifications).

Yet another is institutionalism, in which like minded profs select more like minded profs to enter the field or to receive tenure.

It seems to me that universities once taught people “how” to think, not “what” to think. Degrees are becoming more related to entering a field, rather than introducing someone to reasoning and research skills. In other words, a factory of propaganda for young minds instead of true guidance towards an introduction to logic and the classics.

Ok, you got me fired up, and I forgot that this is a football site for a moment. I’ll just say that I’ll take the MHR University staff (the several dozen greats we have here) over the Bristol staff at ESPN any day. (I’ll also take the the faculty at Styg’s possible prep school over thousands of diploma mills any day as well!)

I know this is a football site,

but I’ve also noticed that our members have a lot of other interests and talents and bring them to the table. It makes for a rich feast and if any particular item does not fit the reader’s tastes, he/she is always free to move on to the next tasty morsel with no offense offered and none taken.

SO BE WARNED. I’m going to add my two cents about higher education as well, even though I have come to this discussion very late a realize it will probably not be read by most, if any of you.

A couple of years ago I went to a symposium on education hosted by a huge mid-western university. All the big names in education were there. The key note speaker was The Diva in her field. By diva I mean she was a super star. I was in the hall way as she entered the auditorium. I knew right away she was a super star because so many of the other “experts” in the field buzzed around her trying desperately to kiss her ring or get a pat on the head or a chance to touch the hem of her fashionably tailored slacks.

During her presentation before upwards of 2,000 of the nation’s leading experts in education, she showed a clip of a high school teacher who filled a balloon with hydrogen and then exploded it. The class was electrified and then engaged in a lively, spontaneous discussion about why and how it exploded. The teacher used that excitement to make several valuable points about chemestry. It was clear the students loved the teacher and he cared for them deeply. I thought it was a brilliant piece of teaching.

When the clip was done The Diva launched into an attack against the techniques and spent most of the rest of her lecture railing about why this was bad teaching. I was floored. The rest of the crowd drank in every word like they were dying of thirst, scribbling furiously on their pastel colored legal tablets, and giving her a standing ovation, twice. When the conference was over, the faithful scattered to every part of our nation, to spread the Gospel. I’m reasonably certain The Diva went back to her throne to be fawned over by her court of servile supplicants. I came back to Colorado fairly certain I had wasted the tax payer’s good money.

My biggest regret is that I didn’t stand up in front of the faithful and tell The Diva she was full of… well you know. I think I told myself at the time I was just a teacher from a rural community college. How could I know more about teaching than The Diva. Alas, I am morally weak. But at least I recognized there is something seriously wrong with all this higher education crap if it produces a scene like the one I described and I continue to practice the equivalent of exploding balloons in all my classes.

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

good for you

I too have problems with the teachings anymore. I dont like the fact not only are teachers not teaching they are trying to inject their own personal, social and political ideals on to these students. If I wanted that to be down I will do it to my own kids, and then give them the opposite view. Then let them make a decision on having 2 sides to a story. I applaud you for sticking to your guns on the exploding balloon

She sounds like an "expert" to the ivory tower educational elites...

..but I doubt she knows a darned thing about teaching. Good comment Jack.

Yeah,

It seems like the fewer facts you have, the more opinion you have to have to balance it all out.

But maybe I’m being unfair to her…

Nope, don’t think so.

You Go Jack!!

My father is a brilliant man, a member of Mensa for at least 50 years, self educated till he was around 58 or so. He went to ASU (Az State) & received his Doctorate in Psycology when he was 67 & from then on he’s gone with the “University” line of thinking rather than using his “noggin & Common Sense!” I sure do miss that “Smart” man from B4 he got all that “Schooling”!!!! Though I will say that he is still working in his chosen field (Drug Abuse) at 85 years young!

Good for him!

I love guys like that, stiil going strong at 85. Fantastic. No sense in stopping until you’ve got no choice.

Well...

The Raiders seem to be this year’s popular sleeper pick, but that didn’t work out so well for the Cards and Niners before them. Personally, I think our floor is 8-8 and our ceiling 12-4 (or so, I’d have to look at the schedule again) so I think it’s unreal that he’d think that we’re terrible, but whatever. ESPN doesn’t have a vendetta against the Broncos, they just don’t cover us well enough. The problem is that emotion sells for analysts nowadays, so they have to be over the top. He knows AFC West fans will jump all over a quote like the one above and he’ll make more fans than detractors because every team has more rivals than fans. It’s nothing personal, just business.

Well what do you expect

When his daddy got him his job. I am a better scout than him. I curse him, and I would really love to run into him on the street. ESPN has no credibilty to me. Besides being in the tank for NE, Dallas and the east coast. I cant wait for the Broncos to kick some serious booty. And shut those @#$%% up!

I’d pay to see that!

Uh, excuse me.

I’m sure you’d be gentlemanly and diplomatic as you pointed out to him, using notes and references, where he had erred in his conclusions.

(But just in case, take a roll of nickles.) lol!

This is exactly why I quit the 'Main-line'....

and now spend most my ‘football’ time at places like MHR. Nobody knows a team more than people that love that team. This is the ‘real-time’ news, the accurate news. We may on occasion let high hopes (such as my visits to la-la-land) blur our vision as to what is about to happen, but we don’t let the facts escape us. Here’s an example:

I love this site and know that Selvin will rush for 2000 yrds this year. Right now both statements are true-if later one of these statements is not true-I’ll accept it.

by Mike Clark on Jul 19, 2008 8:41 PM MDT   0 recs

Man, I knew I loved something about this board......

I was so fed up with the uneducated crap at ESPN from guys like KC Joyner, ol’ Billy Boy Williams and my most hated anal…yst Jeremy Green that I cancelled my subscription to ESPN insider.
These guys are uneducated, blow hard buffoons who know only how to tell us the Pats and Belichick are a wonderful example for sports….right with the Cowboys, and we all suck.
Getting upset by an IDIOT like Green is like riding an exercise bike…gives you something to do but does not get you anywhere.
I ahve a theory…..the world needs to remain in balance between the smart and the stupid…..Jeremy Green is doing his part by doing the job of 10 men in the stupid department.
I ahve boycotted ESPN and will for the rest of my life.especially with regards to NFL.
Peace.

If people actually thought the talking heads on ESPN/FOX/NFL Network...

...were worth listening to, there wouldn’t be thousands of Blogsites throughout the web.

MHR.com is where people who really care (not juts about the Broncos, but the AFC West) come to share info and insight.

Guys like Jeremy Green are the JV squad for the B-Lister sports talk guys. They are one stet up up from radio personalities, but if they have a nice voice, a decent sense of humor, and are fairly presentable, they don’t have to know their subject matter inside and out.

The class of ESPN are guys like Peter Gammons, John Clayton, and Chris Mortenson, but they aren’t great TV personalities compared to the others.

I listened to a podcast from the weekend before the Super Bowl and Jeremy Green was talking about how he was running in some super cool, elite crew at all these Super Bowl parties and how he was getting props and how popular he was. I thought it was pathetic. These B-List personalities and writers for ESPN/FOX etc must get sooo tired of trying to posture so constantly against each other. These guys are literally fighting for scraps from readers and viewers. Green is obviously a guy who thinks enough of himself to give the most bland and overdone commentary on something that he’s paid to know far more about. Wow, the Broncos MIGHT not win 9 games…Oakland MIGHT have a better record by the end of the year…Denver had a few rough years in the draft? What? Where have I been!!??

It just goes to show that there is such a desire for pointed sports-related news that guys like him have a desk at “The Worldwide Leader in Sports”.

by super7 on Jul 21, 2008 10:06 AM MDT   0 recs

I cant stand Mort

He is wrong more than he is right. But, honestly, how can a guy who was working with Parcells get scooped by Jay Glazer on a competing network? I will never ever figure that one out

by broncfanstuckinsd on Jul 21, 2008 11:23 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I like what Mort brings to the table on gameday..

He can usually pull off talking to a coach about injuries and whether or not a guy will be playing or not, which is typically critical for my awful and often unhealthy fantasy teams.

It’s too bad John Clayton looks like Chicken Little too, because if he were pleasing to the eye, he’d be on every NFL show.

27th in the Power Rankings

As a follow-up, Jeremy voted us 27th in the new ESPN power rankings (as did John Clayton.) Our highest vote was 18th by Matt Williamson, of Scouts, Inc. We finished 22nd! Hooray for ESPN.

Already missed 1 prediction

Jeremy Shockey was traded to the Saints today, I don’t know how anyone could say you need Shockey when Boss had such an impressive second half of the season. It would be interesting to see how many of his predictions actually come true.
