Zappa's Fantasy Dark Horse's

I know most everyone who reads MHR is more than a little qualified to do their own fantasy drafting, but I wanted to offer my own opinion on the subject.  We all know and see the "expert" rankings for the draft, but the one thing I have noticed is the lack of respect to our Bronco stars.

So I have several dark horse candidate's from our own team, as well as a few surprising busts.

Star-divide

My first dark horse is Jay Cutler.  Most "expert" rankings have him far down the line in the third, fourth, or fifth rounds.  Behind players like Big Ben and Derek Anderson.  I'm sorry, but I am not sold on Anderson yet.  He had one good year, show me he can have two.  I'd take Anderson no earlier than the middle rounds.  He won't last that long, so some other schmuck will take him.  I also saw one "expert" rank Aaron Rodgers ahead of Cutler.  Talk about flying under the radar.

You will get a steal drafting Cutler in the late second or early third.  If you know that there are no Bronco fans in your league, then you might be able to sit on him until the fourth round.  Jay Cutler will have a monster year this year.  We loaded up on proven veteran wider receivers, we have two solid tight ends, several check down options in our running backs, and one mega stud in BMarsh.  The "experts" made a mistake ranking Cutler so far down the list and we Bronco fans stand to profit greatly from their mistake.

My second dark horse is Selvin Young.  This guy is ranked so far down the list that many second string and even a third string running back ranks ahead of him.  What are the "experts" thinking?!?  A starting Bronco running back that far down the line?  Come on!

In any case, running backs are always a hot commodity and even non-Bronco fans generally ignore this ranking.  So be sure to pick Young up in the second round, for he surely won't last long into the third.  Whether or not Young makes his 2000 yard prediction doesn't matter.  What matters is that he is fully intending to run his ass off all season long, because no man likes to be made a fool.  The closer he makes it to that 2000 yard mark, the less he will be made a fool.

Now for a little curve ball.  I have a major first round bust to call that I am sure everyone will disagree with.  My first round bust of the year is Tom Brady.  I selected Brady in the first round in all my leagues last year, under much ridicule.  He was a godsend to my teams last year, however, I believe that the pressure and humiliation of losing in the Super Bowl and ruining a perfect record will cause a monumental collapse in this Patriot team.  I expect them to miss the playoffs and for Tom Brady to have his worse season as a professional.  They are still a great football team,  but even great teams can falter for a season.

On to my third dark horse.  Daniel Graham will be a huge steal in the later rounds.  He will most likely still be available for your second tight end pick.  It'll be worth nabbing him as a backup in case he has a breakout year.  We know Shanny will use him in passing situations and the word is, he's improved his route running and hands over the offseason.  If you can't get one of the top 5 tight ends, then try to pick up Scheffler as a lower end starter.  He would have great value as well.

My fourth and final dark horse is one that will no doubt make you shake your head in disbelief.  The Denver Broncos defense is ranked so far towards the bottom that you could either wait until the last pick of the draft or pick them up off the waivers once the season begins.  I truly think that last year was an aberration and that the 2008 defensive squad will come out with a vengence.   They are going to bust people in the mouth and I expect nearly double digits interceptions from both Bly and Bailey.  To top it off, we picked up Eddie Royal and I have a feeling he will break a few returns for the distance.  So this pick may be a quality pick up if you feel weak in the defensive/ST area.

There you have it.  You might notice that Brandon Marshall is not on that list and for good reason.  He is rated right where he should be, maybe even a little high because there is so much risk involved with his hand injury.   As for the rest, the "experts" got it all wrong with them and we Bronco fans have a chance in our non-Bronco fan leagues to pick these guys up with great value.  We won't have to sacrifice other quality players in order to pick them up either.

Good luck in all your fantasy leagues, unless you're in one with me, then I say I build beaver dams(inside joke).  Below is a video of a guy I think is the funniest dude on Earth.  Have a great rest of the weekend!!

Beaver this, Beaver that, blah, blah, blah

I hate it when the “mainstream media” gets into their “beaver-bias” mode.

Look here son, wishing for Tom Brady to have a bad season just ain’t gonna make it so, and what are you talking about with waiting to get Cutler as a steal? I seem to remember the Sacless Beavers taking him#7 overall!!

Get used to Tom Brady dominating the Beavers.

They don’t call him Tom “Beaver-spray” Brady for nothing.

Er, which means, you know… like “bug-spray”only… erm… like for Beavers….

Oh, shoot… Not again.

I said Non-Bronco leagues. dang...

I picked Brady in all my leagues last year…I am just saying, I called it last year and I am calling it this year. Brady is still worthy of being picked first or second among all quarterbacks. But there is no way in hell I pick him in the top 5 again this year. I guess I should have been more specific.

I picked Cutler #7 because I was up against a bunch of Bronco fans and Brady and Manning were off the board by then. If I had waited, I would have gotten Phllys friggin Rivers! :P You’re just mad cause you drafted Tom Brady. He’ll do okay for you, but I doubt his stats will be in the top 3-4 QBs this season alone. That’s all I am sayin’. :) At least you got McNabb as a backup…

Selvin Young

I’m not a fantasy expert, and have never played at fantasy sports. My comment may be very ignorant, but I’ll give it a shot.

If I understand how fantasy football works, the knock on Young isn’t that Young isn’t any good, but because Denver is so likely to either use him in committee or to allow a “darkhorse” replacement as the season goes on (Torain perhaps).

Would that be what the “experts” are thinking?

The outsiders looking in can actually be pretty funny

For example it is considered Gospel that Shanny will start one rookie RB every year, and this year the “experts” say you should stash torain on your roster if you have room.

You are correct about “RB by committee”, in that Denver RBs are always considered second-tier type players because they will be splitting points (yards and TDs) amongst them.

AP is ranked #2 tho...last I checked, Chester Taylor is no slouch either.

Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor…Reggie Bush and Deuce. Each of the primary backs in those duos was ranked far ahead of Selvin… Which is why Selvin is such a steal in later rounds. I think I picked him up in the 4th or even early 5th rounds…I got his arse tho. ;)

There were a couple of "committee backs" way ahead of Young.

On NFL.com’s rankings, Selvin is ranked 32-34 among all RB. AP is 2nd for example….so how does that logic work? Even Forte is ranked ahead of Selvin and he hasn’t even played an NFL snap. But apparently, the Bears OL is much more likely to produce numbers for Forte than the Broncos OL for Young.

“Experts” are not very expert…they take last years stats and apply them to this years fantasy players. Worked well for those of us who picked Alexander #1 overall a few years ago, then LJ, ect ect. This years dunce will be Brady. ;)

Patriots?

It will be interesting to see how the Patriots react to the SB loss. When the Broncos were at 13-0 in 98, then lost game 14 in New York in the last minute (on a long TD pass to Amani Toomer) it was a bit of a heartbreak. Lots of pundits thought, especially after the Broncos lost the next week at Miami, that the Broncos were done. The moral of the story may end up being that it’s a heck of a lot better to lose # 14 than # 19. Remember, the Patriots were actually 18 and 58/60ths wins to no losses last year. Had to be a heartbreaker for them to lose the way they did. If you want to see the play that did it, check the following link.

As I recall, it was 3rd and long when this play happened. It wasn’t the touchdown, but it broke the back.
