Broncos Release Mike Bell and Garrett Hartley

The Denver Broncos on Monday waived running back Mike Bell and kicker Garrett Hartley, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.

Bell, a third-year player, rushed for 680 yards on 163 carries (4.2 avg.) with eight touchdowns in 20 games (3 starts) as a Bronco. He entered the NFL with Denver on May 8, 2006, as a college free agent from the University of Arizona.

Hartley, a rookie, entered the NFL with the Broncos on April 28, 2008, as a college free agent from the University of Oklahoma.

Most of the "originals" know my feelings on Bell, or any undrafted FA in a big time role so I won't get into it.  Well, maybe I will on MHR Radio Wednesday.  Let's face it, when a player can't even get to camp without getting cut it really isn't that big of a loss.

I wish both men the best.

How do you figure? Hartley didn't even make it to camp! lol

I too am terrified about our kicking situation. Elam never looked so sexy to me right now! But I must trust Shanny and his judgement in these matters. Oh God…Oh God…

when kickers go to crap, teams tend to bring in...

6 or 7 people to compete. If Prater fails and blows games, then Hartley will be brought back to compete for a job.

So long Mike...

He’s a good guy.

I am truly scared about our kicking situation.

Go Matt Prater!!!

Isn’t Mike Vanderjagt still unsigned? Sure, he missed one hugely important field goal in the playoffs by about, you know, 40 yards wide, but the guy did have 37/37 (pretty sure about those totals, but I know he was 100%) field goals in one year and is a proven vet.So why not jump on that and pick up a guy to help out the kicking situation for a year or two, and then draft a decorated college guy with talent to come in and replace him?

Why do I live in Kansas City?

by papigrande on Jul 21, 2008 4:40 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree...

I’m not sure if Vanderjagt is available. If he is….Why haven’t we gotten him?

Are there concerns that he is a head case? Too much money? What’s keeping us from going after him?

All good kickers miss occasionaly…don’t forget the the Giant’s kicker needed three attempts to win the NFC championship game last year. Also, people readily forget that the only reason Elam had an opportunity to kick some of the walk off field goals last year was becuase he’d missed importand kicks earlier in the game.

Get Vanderjagt in here to at least compete for the spot!

They brought Vanderjagt in already

and worked him out. They obviously didn’t see what they were looking for, so I seriously doubt they would bring him in again.

I don't know

if you missed him on the Cowboys a few seasons back… but wow. That one missed FG must have KILLED his confidence. And by killed, I mean devoured, spat up, kicked around a few times, and dumped into a lake somewhere. He was poor enough for the ‘Boys to sign Martin Gramatica (Or, as the local folk call him, Dramatica, due to poor clutch kicking in TB.)

However, I would like to see he and Olindo Mare (once the ‘Hawks release him) in Blue&Orange to compete for our kicking job.

P.S.: Vanderjagt refuses to be a kick-off specialist.. So we’d have to either get our punter to kick off or sign a third guy just to be KOS.

dont forget

that liquored up kicker is missing FG’s in the CFL right now. Who wants him, not I . Why get the second coming of Karlis (with a shoe) or Zappa’s favorite kicker Treadwell

sorry I forgot

I was trying to make a point.

In one sense I am glad Denver lost, I was still reeling from Super 24. I dont think the city could have handled losing to the Skins again that year. But you cant win if you dont play

Bell

I’ll take a little different tack concerning Bell. Releasing him at this point is better than waiting until the end of camp. He has a better chance of catching on with another team. I was enthusiastic about Bell two years ago. He certainly looked good running the ball. Keeping him last year showed that the Broncos hadn’t given up on him yet, especially since they cut Johnson, but he was never really a FB and he apparently didn’t do particularly well at the other areas of the job.

It’s easy to get enticed by a prospect’s running ability but I’ve come appreciate those other responsibilities, i.e., blocking, receiving, etc., as I’ve learned more about the game. There was no question in my mind that Bell was going to be cut, although I searched for a way that they could keep him on. The position switch to FB was his final chance, and his numbers there speak for themselves. Looking at it with the advantage of hindsight, I’m not sure that the position switch ever made that much sense. And I also wonder about Sapp’s chances, although journalists have been cutting him for years only to find that the staff had other ideas. The only possible surprise this year may be if they find some excuse to keep Alridge as a sixth back—which is unlikely. However, he’s a shoo-in for the practice squad and I foresee them bringing him back on the regular squad if there’s any attrition at RB. Also, Hall is still the #4 RB, so Alridge will have to show in the pre-season that he’s got something else (think SPEED) that he can bring to the team before he can leapfrog Hall.

Completely Agree

Give Shanny a pat on the back for this move. Bell was either going to spend the season buried on special teams or get a chance to carry the ball as a 2nd or 3rd string back somewhere else.

This is why Free Agents think Denver is a good organization. Beyond the lack of recent playoff success, Denver is STILL a class organization.

Interesting but not surprising

I kinda expected a DL would be one of the cuts to make room for the rookies, but it is not shocking that Denver would want to give the DL an extended look in camp. The only thing a bit surprising is that Denver will go to camp with only one kicker on the roster. Even if they are absolutely convinced Prater is the guy, I would have thought they would have a second leg in camp anyway (even to have someone around to kickoff while Prater is focusing on FGs).

And I have to throw my two cents in about Vanderjagt. I still like him as a backup plan for Prater. He has the leg to hit from 50 yds and once he got a proper practice field his accuracy has been pretty solid in the CFL.

Re: Interesting but not surprising

Perhaps it was an indication of how clear-cut the decision was. I don’t think that many of the DL prospects have a better claim to a roster spot, but it may be more difficult to separate the #5 DT from the #6DT, so they made a decision that everyone could agree on. I also think they’re going time mulling over the DL situation, and seeing them in action is going to be part of that decision making process. They also need to see them in the new defense, since their performance last year is not comparable.

Saints and Seahawks

We will have to see who wins those camp battles with New Orleans(Taylor Mehlhaff and Martin Gramatica) and in Seattle(Brandon Coutu and Olindo Mare). Personally, I hope the vets win at least one of those battles. We then could bring in the losing rookie if Prater fails.

PA - Your post brings comfort.

Nice to know their are still some really good options out there. Any of those 4 would be welcomed in Orange.

Keep in mind

that training camp rosters are restricted to just 80 players now, so more players on the “bubble” are getting cut before camp than has happened in the past. I’ve always thought, since the draft, that Bell was a gonner, but it’s unfortunate that he wont have a chance to redeem himself- in the Bronco’s camp anyway. And since the same roster restrictions are in place across the league, it’ll be that much harder for him to get on with another team.

The kicking game scares the crap out of me, but I keep reminding myself that I must trust Shanny and his staff to make the best decisions for the team, both short and long term. I just hope they’re right about this.

I don't even want to post this

because I am afraid that it might jinx us but my guess is that we lose a minimum of 2 games this year because of a gimme field goal. Let’s face it, with the parity in the league today every single point matters. It can’t go unrecognized that Elam had one of the greatest extra point % in league history. I still remember Champ Bailey expressing his displeasure for letting Elam go and I whole heartedly agree. I am just praying that one of those missed kicks don’t turn out to be a season ender!

I look at the kicking game a bit differently

To me, the teams that are beatable on our schedule should be VERY beatable by the Broncos if we limit turnovers. The teams that are tough would be tough whether we had an ace FG kicker or not (and Elam was anything but automatic).

I just don’t see FG % being a major corollation to whether or not we will be successful in 08, so it becomes the perfect time to take our lumps and start developing a young guy. Its just the way it is. You have to be lucky to get a young kicker who doesn’t make mistakes. I will also add that I think the Broncos have the right organizational mindset for developing a young kicker: they have ideal practice conditions, a great STs coach (or so I’ve heard), a consistent training environment overseen by Shanahan, and great fans. :)

I share your concern, but.....

the parity you refer to applies to kickers as well. I honestly don’t know how much difference there is between Elam and Prater. If Prater saves us a roster slot to be used for a ST blocker or tackler it might make up for a missed kick. I do see your point though.

It just broke my heart . . .

I have been a big fan of Mike Bell’s, having watched him for four years here at the U of A, then seeing that he grew up a Broncos fan. Really, how many players came to the Broncos, already bleeding blue & orange?

Watching Selvin Young last year, then seeing Torain and Hillis join the squad, I knew down deep that Mike’s number was up.

Best of luck, Mike. You’re a class guy. I know . . . I’ve seen it for six years now.

The kicking game will be fine!

Hey Guys,
Enough of the “Chicken Little the sky is falling down” stuff. Go back and check Elam’s stats from the first years….they were not very good at all.
Understand Prater will miss some kicks…..Clady will miss some blocks, Royal will mess up on the KR, Hillis will miss a block etc.
The key to our woes is field position, not a kicker. If the special teams step up and Eddie Royal gives us good field position than those field goals become TD’s. the 13-12 game against Buffalo becomes a blow out.
I have faith that our offense will be explosive this year, and we will get in the end zone more. Even Elam himself has had some great things to say about Prater. He has a MONSTER leg and has kicked VERY well in camp.
I say stick with the young guy (unless he is really hopeless) and we mau have ourselves another kicker for the years to come.

I am with you

If the Broncos are gonna depend on a FG kicker to win games then they are in some serious trouble. Look when the Pats went from Vianteri to that Gradkowski I heard the same things. The point is good teams dont ever rely on winning games with kickers. They rely winning games by scoring TD’s and not allowing other teams to score. If anything on the ST’s that concern me its coverage not kicking. When the Broncos have been great under Shanny they have had very few games decided by FG’s. When 8-8 or 9-7 they have need a FG kicker. Plus Elam would go from 75-85% FG accuracy year to year. So to keep painting him as Mr. Automatic is wrong. Yes he was good, but far from the best. Plus his range is decreasing. It happens with age.
