Madden 09

With the impending release of Madden '09, I wanted to get an idea of how many of the MHR faithful are Madden players.

Madden 09 has the ability to play league and group play and I thought it'd be fun to set up an MHR tournament or room if there are enough folks that are interested.

We could also invite some friends from Silver and Black and Arrowhead Pride for a little friendly rivalry tournament.

This is the twentieth version of Madden and claims to be the biggest improvent in a single year yet...I'm looking forward to it.

I love the EA football games

I like the dynasty modes. But I have never played online. Is it ok? do ya play whoever is there or do ya have like leagues?

by broncfanstuckinsd on Jul 22, 2008 3:58 PM MDT reply actions

Either way!!!

You can do a ‘quick match’ which randomly selects an opponent for you. Or you can go into one of the ‘rooms’ and select a opponent based on record, team preference, reputation, etc..

Madden 09 will be the first version to have league/tournament options.

I think Madden '08 is the only one I did not buy

Partially because I was pissed that Madden 07 for PS3 could not handle more than two players. (I do miss the massive 8 way games we played when my friends and I all lived in NYC) But I am over it and ready to jump back in for ‘09.

I love all the cool features and realism, but I know that I am getting old when I start to complain about having to use too many different buttons. Adding the L1 and R1 buttons to the PS2 controllers was my limit. I want to go back to Sega’s A, B and C buttons.

Sorry...I forgot Wii

I’m not going to mess with the poll again after the previous debacle.

I’ve heard some less than positive things about Madden on the Wii…what’s your take.

by UnarmingMermaid on Jul 22, 2008 5:25 PM MDT up reply actions

eh.

It’s not too bad, the main problem is that they try to make it “family style,” which means half the disk’s memory is wasted for people who play lazy Madden.

the 07 & 08 suck

but the kid i just reserved my new copy from tells me that this will be the first year they have a dev team just for wii, i guess the others have been ports from ps2. A ton of the wii games are simple ps2 ports, but with the way wii’s are selling, that shouldn’t last long.

ps i am typing this on my wii, cause i’m a nerd.

Wheeeeeeeeeeee!!

Sorry, I have to do that every time I hear Wii. I played Madden up until about 2006. That, if you remember, was around the time they acquired the NFL liscense and they made the jump to HD gaming with Madden 06 on the 360. Now, I consider myself no gaming authoritah, but I have done fair amounts of both gameplaying and game research, and I believe that that year was the fall from grace of our beloved Madden. The NFL liscense created a monopoly in the football videogame platform, and virtually ensured that Madden would have no competition. That, combined with the fact that the average American will buy something based on name recognition alone, has led to the franchise being very, very lazy the past few years. Each new game has seen the implementation of a couple of new animations and a few tweaks to Franchise and Superstar modes, but that’s about it. Unless they can buck old trends, 09 will be another run-of-the-mill sports game that everyone, and I mean everyone, will buy.

No, the football videogame that I am most interested in is an independent project by NaturalMotion called Backbreaker. This game, while lacking the afforementioned NFL liscense, will capitalize on the implementation of an engine known as Euphoria. Anyone who has played the greatest game ever made, Grand Theft Auto IV, will know about this engine, and how it fully integrates the virtual body’s muscular and bone structures, as well as the central nervous system, into movement. This makes virtual people react to things as actual human bodies would, and would add unprecedented realism to the acts of tackling, catching, running, etc. While the game could play a significant standalone role by itself, its greatest achievement will probably be bringing Euphoria to Madden. IMO, that would refresh the franchise and make it worthy of my $60 again.

man thats sooo intricate

I just like playing football and dont care how sophisticated it gets. As long as its fun (to me) its all I want. Maybe I am too typical. But I did enjoy the info, though

by broncfanstuckinsd on Jul 22, 2008 7:07 PM MDT up reply actions

I used to play

Joe Montana football for hours with a friend of mine. Who knew it wasn’t realistic enough? Still, I like hearing about the advancements in core technology.

Off topic: $60 doesn’t seem that bad for a video game. I remember the first video game I ever bought (TMNT for the ol’ Famicon) was about $56 straight out of Sears and Roebuck. I was saving my deneros for a while to get that one. When you factor in inflation and the mind-boggling technological advances, $60 seems like a steal….

This article from ESPN seems relevant

Sports Video Game Blues Some of the comments from game developers are pretty illuminating. This one relates to what papigrade said above:

Turns out developers can make on-screen athletes who sprint like their real-world counterparts. We just wouldn’t enjoy playing with them because the smoother the running animation, the less responsive the user control. “There are athletes who are really quick and can turn on a dime, but they still have to go through the same basic body movements as everyone else,” says a football game developer. “Lean, turn into the movement, take a first step. Do you really want that to animate every time you press left on the stick? Or do you just want to go left? Getting players to feel responsive, but not look robotic and twitchy—technology these days has a hard time getting that done.”

And then there are issues of making the game believable. As one developer mentioned, people want to use Peyton Manning and have him feel and play like Peyton. But they also want to be able to use Trent Dilfer, so he has to play at least competently. So the great players have to be held back a bit so they don’t dominate even if the human using them sucks. And the poorer players have to be inflated a bit to allow users to have a chance to succeed with them.

The article also talks about things like extra points and how there is one side that believes the occasional miss would liven up the game while the other side thinks that if the user performs the correct actions with the controller, the player should follow suit. I fall on both sides of that debate. In general, if I do something simple correctly I want to see it succeed in the game. At the same time, that does remove the randomness that does pop up during a full season of real football. I kinda think a randomly fumbled snap or the holder muffing the ball on a FG/XP would add to the game. It would be incredibly frustrating when it happens against you in the 4th quarter of an important game, but teams have been eliminated from the playoffs due to a botched hold (see Tony Romo)

The article is not all football related and is worth a read, but maybe not at 1:45 am.

I just wanted to comment

on the small tidbit about GTA IV being the greatest game ever. I can’t believe I’m the first to dispute this, but I am. It is NOT the greatest game ever, nor did it deserve the 10 rating it got from IGN, the first since Ocarina of Time. There’s not a chance that GTA IV is in the same class as OoT, or some of the other high tier games. Is it a very good, enjoyable game? Absolutely. But greatest game ever? Only if you haven’t been gaming for very long.

Ahh! Flashbacks!

Why can’t I beat you Mr. Sandman!? WHY?

Why do I live in Kansas City?

by papigrande on Jul 23, 2008 4:06 PM MDT up reply actions

Sandman 3tko first round

Three things to remember when you fight sandman:
1: Your dodge left is faster than your dodge right. (always dodge to your left)
2: Your left hand is stronger than your right hand (always punch with your left)
Throughout the game certain combos earn you stars, which brings us to point 3:
3: Sandman MUST be worn down with body punches. Forget combos and just use your left. Once you get the pattern down, it is possible to execute PERFECTLY and accumulate 3 KOs in the first round. Try it as follows:

Every boxer started out with a sort of “signature” intro. Sandman’s was to wale on you for 50 seconds. Do as follows: dodge jab->uppercut->dodgejab—>uppercut. DO NOT get hit! You need all your hearts and all your time.

Eventually he switches to a routine uppercut, dodge the first one, and get ready. After every uppercut, dodge and give him three body shots. He blocks the fourth, but give it to him anyway, because if you are fast you can uppercut him. Then keep doing that: uppercut dodge->body shots->blocked bodyblow—>uppercut. He should go down somewhere before the 2 minute mark.

Now the 2nd knockdown is a quickie. When he gets up give him a body shot straightaway and repeat the uppercut dodge sequence from above. ONLY DO IT 3 TIMES! Now get ready for his Super Sandman! Lots of dodging, but as soon as he is spent unload on his midsection. He should go down and you should still have about :50 seconds left.

As soon as he gets up, body shot and repeat the uppercut dodge sequence from above, and don’t worry, no more Super Sandmans in the 1st round. You should be able to get the TKO with a second or two to spare!

That was way, way, way, WAY more than you wanted to know, I’m sure….

I’d be happy to head up the Xbox scheduling, set up, etc…

I’ll post updates to keep you all in the loop.
