Rod Smith To Retire Tomorrow

A Denver Broncos legend for over a decade will officially end his career tomorrow when Rod Smith officially retires from Professional Football at a press conference tomorrow at 2:00PM est.

Smith owns virtually every receiving record for the Broncos, including records for career receptions (849), receiving yards (11,389), touchdown catches (68), touchdowns (71) and 100-yard games (31). The Missouri Southern product leads all undrafted players in every major receiving category and was a crucial part of 2 Super Bowl Championship teams.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection (2000-01, '05), Smith currently stands 12th in NFL history in career receptions, 19th in career receiving yards and tied for 31st in career receiving touchdowns. Smith, whose nine-year streak of recording at least 70 receptions from 1997-2005 ties for the second longest in league history, also set team records for 1,000-yard receiving seasons (8) and 100-catch seasons (2).

After spending his rookie season on the Broncos' practice squad in 1994, Smith helped Denver to seven postseason berths (1996-98, 2000, 2003-05), three AFC West titles (1996, '98, 2005) and two Super Bowl victories (XXXII in 1997 and XXXIII in `98). The Broncos compiled a 126-70 (.643) record in the 196 overall games (183 regular season, 13 playoff) in which Smith played for his career.

Smith set Broncos career playoff records for receptions (49), receiving yards (860) and receiving touchdowns (6) in 13 postseason appearances (12 starts). His 152 receiving yards in Super Bowl XXXIII against Atlanta (1/31/99) tie for the fifth-highest total by a player in Super Bowl history.

The wide receiver holds five of the top-10 single-season reception totals in Broncos history, including his club-record 113 catches in 2001 that made him one of seven players in league history to post consecutive 100-reception seasons. He also owns four of the top-10 single-season receiving yardage totals in franchise annals, including a club-record 1,602 yards in 2000.

Let the debate begin on Rod's Hall of Fame worthiness.  I've attached a poll to get your opinion.  For me, all that talk can wait for another day.  For the next 48 hours let's remember Smith as a player, what he meant to the Broncos on and off the field, and how big of a loss this will be.

One of the best ever!!!

Rod Smith epitomized excellence and profesionalism in the NFL.

He is what every player should strive for.

My favorite Bronco of all time!

Yes, that includes Elway and Floyd Little! Best Wishes Rod!

He was a nobody . . .

Rod Smith was an Undrafted Free Agent. That mean at least 224 players were selected, and his name appeared nowhere among them. He only went on to START on two Super Bowl teams and be counted among the Pro Bowlers.

What Rod Smith achieved was illogical and seemingly impossible. I have one more opportunity to say he is my favorite active player.

Should Rod be nominated to the Hall of Fame? Well, I’m a Broncos fan, of course. But who else has done more to get to the top than he has?

I can think

of no classier player in the NFL than Rod Smith.

Will Rod be a first-ballot HOF? No, but he’ll have his day in Canton eventually. For a guy basically coming out of nowhere, he’s done more than anyone could have expected.

Are you kidding me?

If there is any player who exemplifies the h.o.f. (de-emphasis added), Rod Smith is that man.

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

Who in the world voted NO?

This is a no brainer and he should be in the HOF without a doubt. Not only was he the best undrafted WR in the NFL, he is also a class act and as UnarmingMermaid stated…...epitomized excellence and professionalism in the NFL.

Of course he's HOF worthy, but.................

I would prefer to see about 10 other Broncos enshrined before Rod Smith.

Why do we even ask these questions. The Hall of Fame voters is a collection of Sports Jouranists. Listened to the media the last 20 years? They are a collection of biased individuals. Yes, the political bias even runs rampant in the Sports media.

Look at Denvers Representative – Jeff Legwold, a transplant from Nashville in recent years. He still doesn’t know what year Elway was drafted. This guy spouts his game predictions and personal ctitcism about a team that he knows nothing about, and he’s Denvers representative on the Hall of Fame? What a farce.

And yes, I like Rod Smith, but before Little? Taylor? They are more deserving.

And comming off the bench

is Denver Diehard to hit one over the fence. Well stated my friend!

I agree with firstfan.

Rod Smith must be there but there’s a very respectable waiting list.

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

You will be missed Rod.

Man itll be a sad day. He was a great player and a great guy. I was hoping the whole year that he would be able to come back and play again but I would rather him retire and not destroy his body. He better go to the HOF.

First Ballot

Rod Smith should be a first ballot HOFer in my mind. I agree there are Broncos who should be there as well but Rod has done so much for the team that i dont see how he can be denied.

Go Broncos!

I hope

He will be inducted one day. But I look forward to seeing him on the ring of fame.

The best undrafted player ever!! I will never forget his first TD pass.
Plus one of a few players to have 100 receptions against 3 teams. The AFC West is happy that he retired. But he has passed the torch to Marshall as a threat at WR everytime he plays

And I only hope......

that Marshall follows in Rod Smith’s footsteps. You can’t have a better WR to follow/look up to.

how about a hall of fame...

...voted on by players and coaches. the nhl has awards voted on in this way, but not for career achievement. who knows better about a player than someone who lined up against him, game-planned for him, etc. i think rod would get in easily in this format, as he is well-respected by his peers and coaches league-wide. i agree the people voting on the hall are not the most qualified, but it is also a difficult task to determine “the man” in the ultimate team sport. does montana get in without walsh? rice? hard to determine, there’s simply too many factors for a sports writer to consider. let the players/coaches decide, they know better

"BE READY ROD... ROD SMITH"

I love that part of the NFL Films videos where Elway calls Rod’s number for that 50 yd hail mary TD vs the Redskins.

In my top 5 favorite Broncos of all time, he exemplifies the words: team, class, professional, humble, work-ethic, leader… should we keep going here?

And I definitely think HoF material, without a doubt. Perhaps 2nd ballot at worst!!! His numbers match up with several HoFers already, but I would almost say that his non-statistical-based attributes should impress even more. His zero-missed off-season sessions, his blocking ability, his leadership on and off the field, his tutelage of younger players, his rise from humble roots (see Denver Post story on his knee injury in college… didn’t know that before), etc etc etc.

Sure it took Monk a long time to get in and we don’t have some very deserving Broncos there too… but 2 wrongs don’t make a right! Rod needs to be in there…

As I have said a few times before on this site… I will wear my #80 jersey with pride even though he is no longer playing the game.

In Rod we trust…

Thanks Rod.

A hero of play and character. You will be remembered.

Peter King

I bet that, on SI.com, Peter King might say something about Smith’s HOF unworthiness. But I get the impression that King and Paul Zimmerman are biased against Denver.
