Carlton Powell Starts Training Camp on P.U.P. List
The Denver Broncos on Friday declared rookie defensive tackle Carlton Powell active/physically unable to perform with an injury to his right Achilles tendon suffered during offseason workouts.
Powell was selected by Denver in the fifth round (148th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft from Virginia Tech University.
I am looking into this a bit deeper to see how serious the injury is. The Broncos can remove Powell from the P.U.P List at anytime before final roster cutdowns. After that point, Powell would be inactive until after Week 6.

Damn. It's gotta be bad if they put him on the PUP list.
Week 6? Are you serious?

Like I said...
Not yet. He can go on PUP now and be activated at anytime up to the final roster cut. In short, he could practice tomorrow. Get past the cut-down and we are looking at Week 6.

If he remains on the PUP
until week 6, is he allowed to practice with the team during that time?
If so, this could just buy him some time to learn the D and adjust to the speed of the NFL game. If not, it makes me a little nervous about our DT depth. If Robertson doesn’t work out we are left with Thomas/McKinley as our starting pair.
I posted below
the answer to your question, and it indicates that PUP is not a good way to buy a player time to learn with the team.
I will say that Thomas/McKinley starting doesn’t bother me at all, though they may prove to be disastrous in teh final analysis. Rather I am disturbed by the lack of depth in the rotation without DRob and Powell. Runstoppers appear in short supply around here….

Oops
Shoulda read through!
Thomas/McKinley as starters is not so bad, but it does leave basically nothing behind them. I like Thomas as a backup for another year to polish his game. McKinley I could see starting regardless, but I prefer him as a situational player.
I think Robertson has a bit of a chip on his shoulder after his Jets experience, and I fully expect him to play, and play well. He’d better—or it may be a long season on the D-Line.
not good
Man, I was really hoping to see him play. Maybe its nothing serious and he can start practicing in a few days.
This is a bummer
He needs reps. It doesn’t even help with the roster situation since he still counts against the 80 man limit in camp.
To review what being on PUP means: cannot practice with team, and must rehab privately, though he is allowed to go to all team meetings. Note that there are two different types of PUP. Players that land on reserve-PUP are ineligible to play or practice for the first six weeks of the regular season. Players on active-PUP can be taken off the list at any point during training camp. Powell sounds like an active-PUP (jack russel, perhaps?) Once a player is taken off active-PUP and returns to practice, he cannot be placed on reserve-PUP later. Please note that a player on PUP will count against the cap. I think but do not know for sure that players on active-PUP count against the 80-man roster limit and players on reserve-PUP do not.
The indication by this is that the injury is either not serious, or potentially season ending serious, as Powell no longer qualifies for the “middle of the road” seriousness of reserve-PUP and its evaluation period after six weeks. Lets hope it is the former.

Nice info Styg
Does anyone know the rule about the active-PUP and the 80-man roster?

The roster on db.com
looks to have been updated and we are currently at 81 players, but one of them is the International Practice Squad player from Mexico, who does not count against the roster limit.
So it appears that Powell still counts against the 80 man limit.

I am not ready to push the panic button.
We still have Harris and don’t forget that odd duck Mallard.

Why is Powell on the PUP list
and not the reserve-pup list and not count against our 80 man roster? There has to be someone we could bring in—- a UFA ? or another kicker ? Shanny knows he will be out for the season so we are just wasting a spot or so it seems with still so many positions unanswered
They are probably formalizing his move to IR right now
It will involve getting a 100% evaluation before making the decision. As to why he hasn’t been moved to the reserve-PUP, he is ineligible, because he was on the active-PUP first. Unless you were asking why he wasn’t just put on reserve-PUP in the first place, in which case I would guess they didn’t know the severity of the injury.
We should have another player in camp within the next day or so. I’m guessing not a kicker though. There are some veteran free agent DTs out there who could very well duplicate whatever we were expecting from Powell in limited play this year. Grady Jackson and Anthony Mcfarland come to mind, but it probably isn’t worth scanning the free agent lists over. Whoever is brought in will be an afterthought for our defense this year…

Thanks styg
This brings a little more serenity to the situation. I find it slightly odd that this severe injury happened several weeks ago and it is just now coming to light. I wonder why the journey to P.U.P instead of going straight to IR. Hmmm.

I can't figure this out, myself
It could be a technicality regarding a rule, along the lines of speeding up the process to get him to IR seeing as how the injury really didn’t happen during training camp.
It could also be an error based on a misinterpretation of the rule.
It is an odd situation, though. How many teams lost players during the OTA’s this year? Or ever??

My guess.
It buys time to make a decision. By making the decision much later after the injury, the team can see where it really stands with the injury.

That makes sense.
It really makes one wonder if we are snakebit. As styg says, how many teams loose important players during OTA.s? Achilles injuries? Sheesh! He should have been doing yoga instead of weights.

thanks styg
we do need another DT to look at for sure whether old or UFA
No a good start.
I know that he could be activated before the first week of the season or tomorrow. However this sucks because not only could he be out for some time he is also a rookie, so we really don’t know what he is capable of doing. Hopefully it turns out to be not that bad we won’t have to wait til week 6.
