Monday AM practice
I caught practice this morning and thought I'd post a brief overview.
First, it was not a particularly good day for the offense. Several dropped passes and missed throws from all three QBs. They just didn't look in sync. That said, BMarsh made some huge plays and I am now convinced the arm is just fine (now it's his brain we need to work on). Scheff also made several nice plays. He has a talent for getting lost in the coverage...and Cutler has a talent for finding him. Aldridge looked good...as did Torain. I overheard some guys that go to most of the practices say that Pittman has been extremely impressive. Unfortunately, Hillis was out with a hamstring (severity unknown).
The defense looked decent. Although the offense was stopping themselvers more than the D was stopping them. Crowder blew up several plays and looked impressive. Foxworth also made some great plays...including an INT for a touchdown. Several people also mentioned that Nate Webster has looked significantly better that Koutavides at MLB so far.
Prater looked okay on field goals. He was hitting pretty consistently from 45 out. However, he did not look good on kickoffs...most of which barely made it into the endzone if at all.
Overall, the team looks as if they are still a bit rusty. I guess that's to be expected not even a week into camp.

Montrae Holland?
Holland was nowhere to be found…and nobody seemed to know why he wasn’t practicing.

he is too fat to participate!

Apparently he was practicing yesterday...
...which is what people were confused about. Maybe his weight went back up? Also, several people said that you could see him away from the team working with the strength and conditioning coach at previous practices; which was not the case today. It’s possible he was just in the weight room or something.

My question
was he participating in the OTA’s? If so how could he not know he was too fat?

That’s why this whole issue is such an enigma. Who knows??

Mdierk, Mike and Sandy interviewed Rick Tuten today on Holland, I summed it up for everyone over on my fanpost in response to HT.

It worries me that Webster might be our starter....
sigh.
I just cant get over his missed gap assignments last year. I just cant.

at least he will have less gaps to miss!

yeah...but...
gap assignments should be much simpler this year….so that should be less of a probleim (I hope)!

Two points
1) We are not going to employ a run-contain defense as our primary or base defense.
2) Webster will be able to react and tackle, thus utilizing his natural aggressive nature.
I am not so worried. If he beats out K2, we still end up with an ace ST player.

100% agreement
I’m ok with Webster, in his more natural MLB spot, and with K2 leading the ST charge.
I'm ok with webster at MLB as well
the more I think about it, the more I see interchangability at MIKE, between the two. Webster was certainly a guy who was accepted by his teammates last year though. Remember that little arms crossed thing they were always trying to do? Too bad they weren’t better. They could have done it more often….

In pre-season-feel-goods you can think what you want.
In ‘questions’ you can get an ulcer and still know nothing. I like this team. In fact i like this team more than my brain really wants to. Just a good feeling that I can’t seem to shake, “The push-forward-I-don’t-care-what-it-takes” attitude of this team.
I like this team…..I wish I could write more….But that is enough….13-3.
Foxworth!
I really thought that Paymah would develop into a better player, but so far Foxy has shown me that I’m wrong. I think we’re going to let Paymah walk next year, retain Foxy and continue to develop Jack Williams.
Looks like our big concern right now is the OL, we have guys playing out of position thanks to Holland’s “glandular” eating problem. Though Clady is already looking like our best lineman which is great news!

Clady
Did I miss something? I haven’t heard how he is doing. I sure hope better than what we heard from the first day.

I didn't watch him like I should of...
Although I read afterward that he did well.
Shanahan is also very high on Harris.
Moss not so much. Apparently CCHS grad Tyler Polumbus worked him.

This concerns me a bit:
Not to be a nebbish, but can this be right?
“While they clash with defensive linemen, Holland often can be seen on the adjoining artificial turf field, pushing a heavy sled back and forth with Tuten barking instructions. On Sunday, with the turf field at about 125 degrees, the workout went a solid hour and 40 minutes without a water break.“We’re doing this for his own good,” Tuten said. “
I know that Holland is responsible for his conditioning and has no one else to blame. My concern is that we had two players drop with hamstring injuries yesterday, and Improper hydration and improper stretching are two of the most common reasons for that injury (along with musculo-skeletal imbalance). If the listed temp is accurate and this informationis true, Tuten is playing with fire. Dropping lots of fluid weight doesn’t change the level of fat in the body – that does ‘burn’, being consumed as the body needs it via the workout. Not hydrating in temps over 100 f while training for over an hour and a half is a good way to get injured.
Think where man's glory most begins and ends,
And let me say my glory was I had such friends
-Yeats-
I can believe the temp...
It gets HOT….and it’s been roasting the past couple of weeks in Denver.
We’re about to set a record for consecutive 90+ degree days. That’s the only negative about attending camp…the heat and lack of shade.

it's a nice 76 degrees here in OC.

yeah
iT LASTED ABOUT 30 SECONDS AND SEEMED TO GET STRANGER AS IT WENT ON.
You?
It was really nothing compared to the Northridge quake (1994). That was frickin gnarly.

I felt it here
In National city. I rememeber the Joshua Tree earthquake in 92, but I didnt feel the Northridge quake. It was wierd it shook for about 10 seconds maybe a bit longer. It was weird. In 92 that one gave me a friggin headache.

1992
I was in Escondido and it was the only earthquake I’ve been through (so far) that I actually contemplated getting out of the house. We had a pool and the aftershocks got some pretty good waves going in it.
1994 I was in Penasquitos and it jolted my girlfriend (now wife) and I awake, but we went back to sleep. Later at work I found out about all the problems up in Northridge.

I got hitched
Up there in Penasquitos. Actually got married a month after the quake. So you could say that was forboding the destruction about to happen to me. =)
My wife at the time was shaking for the rest of the day.

Havent been there
Since 1995 when I was with NCIS and had to go to Weps Station out there to get paperwork on a USN guy. My friend from my USN days has a dad who works (or worked ) on the base

I'm hoping that if the story is accurate,
...Holland was hydrated before the practice. I agree with you Bear. You can’t mess with heat stroke. I have to believe that the trainers are up on that, up on liability risks, and that the story is a little embellished. I hope.

Or a heatstroke incident
to bring yet more negative press to camp…
I do, however, appreciate someone kicking Holland’s butt into gear. “This is your job, fatty!”
I am going to trust the training staff that they are on top of it, and that the media report is exaggerated.
Holland's Hydration Pack...
From what I hear… Holland is packing all of his own liquids. Like a camel in his beer gut.
I hope to see him return soon to the field. Hope he looks like a raisin. (less the water weight).

That is
one giant raisin.
He will have to start singing “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and move to Cali. ;-)
