Montana Elway and Sammy (in la-la-land)
Sammy Winder
As I reminiscent the days of Elway and Montana, suddenly I have this, ’ come from somewhere', memory of a half-back named Sammy Winder. For some reason I love Sammy and hate the stories about Montana vs Elway. Those of us that saw Elway carry, team after team, of average tallent, know that no other QB could have done this. Elway is the best ever, and I thank him for staying in Denver his entire NFL life.
But what about Sammy! He started, “The Drive,” he helped the Elway legend.
Some have told me not to---but I just can’t help it.
I’m going back into the la-la-land-of-pre-season-feel-goods.
Ahhh! It is so nice to be back in la-la-land. In this land Cutler is only ‘just-as-good’ as Elway and its only his third year..
Selvin is faster and stronger than the Sammy of old, and as good as Davis at running away.
Sammy Winder is remembered by Bronco Fans because of his style and ‘The Drive’. There is a love of him because there is no illusion. “Get Ball Run Forward” From the Two he took the ball, ran forward, and started the drive.
Sammy and Selvin are, and were, in the same spot. Montana and Elway….there is no contest. Montana played with a team. Elway carried a team, a franchise, an entire city, and many of us fans on his shoulders. This is la-la land and comes at you like a dream.
In this dream Selvin doesn’t see Davis holding up a trophy. He sees Sammy, putting his head down, plowing forward, getting a first down. The drive begins!
Thankyou Mr. Winder
Us somewhat funny Bronco fans are funny….don’t you think?

There were so many no names from that era that
we Bronco fans remember with fondness. In a way we have all been spoiled with the mega super stars that surround our team each and every year. Remember back in the day when the Broncos were gong to Super Bowls with a bunch of nobody’s and John Elway.
Sure we had Dennis Smith, Karl Mecklenburg and other Pro Bowlers…but even they took back seats to the LT’s and Ronnie Lotts of the League.

I know
I wonder what Winder could do in Shanny’s one-cut-and go system.
I also wonder where Dennis and Karl would be if they had played in Dallas or New York. OH WAIT!! I Know!! They would be in the Hall! So would many others. Now I’m sad and need to return to la-la-land.
In la-la-land we have many players in the Hall.

I tought Karl
was good, but not hall worthy. Plus it does not matter he is a Bronco so that will never ever ever be discussed. Smith, I am on the fence on.
never have been sold on Winder. Neither was Dan Reeves. Thats why he was always drafting rb’s. Sewell, Lang, Humphries. Sure he had a nice 3 yard run to move the ball to the 5 and then a catch for 7 to get to the 12 in the Drive. But never averaged more than 3.9 YPC. Thats HORRIBLE. I think he was a good role guy. But to compare him and Selvin to a Montana/Elway is a STRETCH! But you said you are in LA-LA land so I will say OK.

Not really what I meant
In no way was I comparing Sammy with Selvin on a skill basis. Winder was never more than an average back, but its amazing how many times he came through at the very-very-crunch-time.
I was thinking more of ‘The Drive,’ how he started it off, and this years team. Sammy helped the team any way he could, Selvin wants to help the team any way he can. Sammy might have been a very good back in Shanny’s zone-blocking-one-cut-and-go scheme, Selvin, after a year seeing the scheme thinks he can get 2000 yrds. Something I think is possible (don’t throw me another reality check—I’m in la-la-land).
I was thinking of Sammy’s start to that drive, the drive Selvin seems to have, and the drive this team will need to make all my la-la-land wishes come true.

Sometimes being good enough
is good enough. That’s what Sammy was, and he did it with great fervor.

Mississippi Mud Dance
Sammy was definitely good at getting into the end zone (saw that dance many times).

About Sammy
It was a Sunday ritual when 23 was in the line up…...........
Sammy get the ball
Sammy run forward
Sammy fall down…..................over and over and over
Don’t get me wrong, I liked Sammy. Everybody did, but he was not a very good back, yet he was the feature back through all those Super Bowl years in the 80’s. His longest run from scrimage his entire career (9 years) was 52 yds, the 2nd? only 42 yds, and he only twice broke a 30 yarder after that. Otherwise, sammy was srticktly a short yardage guy, nothing more. He rushed 1,495 times, and only 4 carries went further than 30 yards. I don’t blame Sammy, he was what he was. I blame Reeves.
Sammy played nine years in Denver and nowhere else. I believe it’s beacuse Reeves was committed to him He would not have made it on most teams. Unfortunately, Winder and Willhite were what we got. Reevs likes those small running backs. I think he always dreamed of finding another Dorset. Winder wasn’t the answer.
In Sammy Winders 9 years he averaged just 603 yards per season. He only broke 1000 yds once. It’s true that he was intrumental in winning those years and yes he was a key in “the drive”, but so were a lot of guys during those years. Sewell, Willhite, Lang, Humphreys. Remember Mobley and Clarence Kay?
Denver had a host of good football players and one GREAT player wearing #7. Nobody in the league did so much with so little. I have never seen with my own eyes, just one player on a team make so much of a difference in winning and losing as I did Elway. Like it or not, he was better than Montana, and I no longer consider that an opinion. I state it as fact. Just look at the rushing numbers back then. How much proof do you need?
There is no doubt that Shanahan is a much better HC than Dan Reeves ever was. Everything Reeves did was in the mold of Tom Landry…Everything! Remember in 92 when Reeves had Maddox and Moore switching off as QB on every down? That was the same stupid thing that Landry did with Staubaugh and Morton. I think that sometimes Reeves was hell-bent to still try and impress Landry long after he was gone. If you watched and remembered those games, you know what I’m talking about.
Like I said, I liked Sammy, I did, but Denver needed a blue chip running back during those years. If we had that, there would probably be a few more Lombari’s out at Dove Valley. (Disclaimer: Denver would have needed to play without Tony Lilly as well as a Blue Chip RB to win those Superbowls)

Have to agree about Lilly
He thought that since he followed Steve Foley, that he was just as good as Foley.
Don’t think so…

Funny you Denver Diehard
This post was not about Sammy Winder, and this is my fault. I made a comment to a post comparing Montana to Elway. In that comment I simply pointed out that Montana had this funny new thing called, ‘The West Coast Offense’, and Elway was stuck with this years old moldy Cowboy offense that teams had studied for years. Somewhere during typing the comment I had this flashback of Cleveland/Denver years gone by. You cannot deny that Sammy started ‘The Drive’.
I was trying to use that start to ‘The Drive’ and compare it to the drive that Selvin seems to have. The drive that this team will need to become great again.
I apologize for coming across wrong.

No appology needed
If anything I suddenly got on my high horse and had to rant about Sammy. Couldn’t help it. It’s true that he caught the first pass beginning the drive. And you’re right about the Cowboys offense. Thats all that Reeves was about.

Elway>Montana
DenverDiehard, I agree with you. I think that Elway was better. Montana was good, but people get too much credit, especially QB’s, when you win that many SB’s. I was on YouTube, and someone said that Elway didn’t have the mental makeup that Montana had. And I said, if he didn’t, how did he direct a team 98 yards in Cleveland to a tying TD and then to the win in OT? Elway, in my opinion, gets too much flak from a lot of other fans who look at the 3 SB losses and his stats in the 80’s too much. They used to judge the whole Denver team on those things as well. That is why they were 14 point underdogs to Green Bay. People thought that it was still the same type of Denver team from the 80’s playing the Pack. I think the Broncos have been the most misunderstood franchise in the NFL.
As for Winder, I don’t think he was too bad, and he was a half-decent steal(they got him in the 5th round in 82 out of So.Miss), but Willhite was overrated and shouldn’t have been a first rounder that year. Denver could have had G Roy Foster(the guy who had a soundbyte on the NFL films about salt in the poundcake and the raisins in the cookies when he was with San Fran) in the first round that year. He was a pretty good player for about 11-12 years with the Dolphins and Niners.

This goes to show how GREAT #7 is/was
He took 3 teams basically on his back offensively to the Super Bowl. The 1989 defense was the best the Broncos had in the 80’s and allowed the fewest points in the NFL that year and still gave up 55 to SF. Its not Elways fault they lost those games. He did everything possible. I mean in #22 up 10-0 after the first qtr, and Mark Haynes doesnt jam Sanders coming off the line and Williams throws a 80 yd TD pass., and the rest is history. Look at Elways WR’s, the 3 amigos, Clarence Kay, Orson Mobely, Mike Young. The only WR to make it the Pro Bowl for Elway in 80;s was Steve Watson and he was great. To me Elway is the best . He has 148 victories and a .630 winning %. Thats the best for over 150 career starts (so far I think Manning might eventually break that). To me the bottom line what can you do with the talent around you. All Elway did was win

Whatever happened to Orson?
I used to love watching him blow defenders up after catching the ball. He was a beast!
