Five Chargers you may hear about in 2008
Given the comments on the depth or lack thereof on the Chargers, I thought I would give my take on the backups that may make the break through over the next few years.
Legedu Naanee - He went to Boise State to try and become a QB. He lost the battle as the starter there and was converted to TE. He is reputed to be amazingly versatile, and he has very soft hands. This year may see him used as TE, FB or WR but this off season he has mostly worked as a receiver and will battle Buster Davis for the number three position. He 'played' the part of Titans QB Vince Young in preparation for the playoffs. The coaches were amazed at his ability, both in running and passing. You may see some trick plays where he throws the ball. Also just in terms of pure athletic talent people have placed him up with Cromartie and Merriman. It may be two years before you see him bust out.
Anthony Waters - He was a projected number one but tore his ACL in his senior year; not unlike A. Cromartie. The Chargers picked him up in the third round as a linebacker. Last year he was laid up, but this year should see him start to play on defense. He is unlikely to make the breakthrough this year, but the Chargers are likely going to lose either Shaun Phillips or Shawn Merriman in the near future, Waters will be seasoned and ready to go by then. He may challenge for Cooper's LB position for the first four games if he has an amazing pre-season.
Brandon Siler - I'm still not sure why he slipped as low as he did (7th Round). Yet another linebacker who looked great on special teams (21 tackles). That earned him several publications 'All Rookie' honors. He was with the Gators from Florida and was reputed to be a leader on the defense. He left college early, maybe that was why he slipped into the seventh round, it will be interesting to see how much play time he will get. Even with the great LBs, it's good to see some young turks backing them up.
Paul Oliver- Drafted as a corner, he may be a bit slow and get shifted to backup Safety or play in some nickel and dime formations. Formerly expected to be a first round pick, he became disqualified academically; the Chargers picked him up for a fourth round pick in the supplementary draft. Even though disqualified academically he scored well on the Wonderlic; but you have to wonder about his motivation. The coaches do report a good work ethic. He spent last year learning the defense and reports say he looks very good. He would play the top corner on the 'scout' team for the Bolts.
Buster Davis - As the Chargers number one pick last year, Broncos fans might most likely have heard of him. He played next to D. Bowe and had injury issues last year. Many criticized AJ for reaching, but near the end of the year you could see flashes of his potential. Very quick and with good hands, he looks to be ready to fight it out with Naanee to be the Chargers number three receiver. The Chargers are so deep at WR this year, they are actually going to either trade or release Eric Parker who had been our number one over the prior five years (out with an injury last year). He is likely to return punts along with D. Sproles. Many of us would like to see Cromartie who has blazing speed, but it looks unlikely unless one of them goes down.

I like your posts. I was in the SanDiego area for a few years during the Fouts era. I caught a lot of flack for being a Broncofan back then, but made many Charger-Fan-Friends at the same time. I will hope the best for Legedu Naanee. Broncs/Oks Fiesta Bowl….most fun game ever. Ever!

Fouts Era
was great. I remember even when they weren’t making the playoffs, they were just pure fun to watch. I remember with John Jefferson playing Wide receiver and Ozzie Smith playing shortstop, the sports highlights were always incredible.

I think a major blunder
was by both SD and JJ. He was fast and awesome. I do like the basically got Wes Chandler to replace him, not in the JJ trade. But he could stretch the D. One of my best memories of the great Broncos defenses of the late 70’s is when Air Coryell cam into denver in 1979 and the Broncos shut them out 7-0. It came down to the old adage a great defense can beat a good offense

The JJ trade
was stupid, as was letting go of Louie Kelcher and Gary ‘Big Hands’ Johnson. The 49ers just crushed people with all the players San Diego wouldn’t pay. Chandler was great, but for just pure fun, nothing beat watching Jefferson making a reception. I remember one pass Fouts was just throwing away and Jefferson just leapt as high as he could, speared it with one hand and brought it down.

It amazes me
they never got to a super bowl. That 1980 AFC title game was a shock to me that SD lost

I Remember...
The Chargers losing to Houston in a playoff game when most the World thought SD would win the SuperBowl. I wasn’t devistated, I’m a Bronco fan, But I remember being sad.
I still root for the Chargers except against us. ..... or if things are close and we are in a race.

I remember that game
I was rooting for Houston. Cuz I didnt like SD and wanted the Oilers to win the Super Bowl becuz they beat the Broncos in the Wild Card game. But whats amazing about that game was Houston did not have Dan Pastorini or Earl Campbell they both got hurt the week before against Denver. Plue Vernon Wells was Dan Fouts favorite receiver that day.

That game...
just about killed me. The Oilers had Campbell, Pastorini and Burreau out, thanks to Denver I think. I was sure they were going to win, it was a killer when Houston pulled off the upset. I remember reading later that they had pretty much figured out the offensive signals and had their dbs lying in wait. As a fan I never took another game as a sure win.

that 1979
Charger team was awesome. I remember during that season gthey played Pitt, who was the defending champs and SD killed them 35-7. I was sure SD was gonna win. PLus I also remember that the last game of 1979 was Denver v. SD for the AFC West title on MNF. After a nice start for Denver and a 7-0 lead. Too much Fouts. Still they only won 17-7. The game was not as close as the score. Denver’s d kept the game close, but the offense was awful

1979
was the best Charger team ever I think. It was after that Monday night Steeler game I really thought they had it wired; they could play with the big dogs. As much as I enjoy watching the current team, that was the most fun I ever had watching football.

'79 was a great team
As I said before I was living in San Diego that year, the wrong AFC team definitley went to the Super Bowl that year. I was a little upset when SD beat Denver for the AFC West—but I really expected it. When they lost to Houston….....
DaBolts, you were not the only San Diegan crushed that moment. I was really sad—but not devistated. Many of my friends, however, walked around like dumb-struck zombies and wouldn’t talk football for over a week.

Dumb-struck zombies..
what a great name for a band. Ha, I absolutely fell into that category after that Houston loss.

I can relate
to a devastating loss in the playoffs. Jax in 1996 was that for me. Well outside of the Super Bowls losses

I had that moment
After Elways first SB with the Giants. We outplayed them for three quarters and got crushed. I couldn’t listen to or read about football news for at least two months. Funny us football fans.

I was born in 78 and was a budding Charger fan
early in life. I even have a few pictures of me sporting Charger gear when I was 2-4 years old. That all changed when we moved to Colorado in 83…I was turned into a Broncomaniac for all time.

He has much faith
Zappa sees the good in Denver. However, I wouldn’t say SD is quite the “Dark Side,” I mean, Oakland looks and acts more like your stereotypical dark side expectations. Of all non-Bronco teams in the AFC West, SD is definitely the least of all evils (IMO, anyway).

Naanee
I often trade Naanee in Madden when I do franchises with teams other than Denver, I keep him at #2TE but also have him play slot, which works well with his speed. I haven’t seen him play in real life, but I’m a little frightened by the Chargers’s depth at WR. With Chambers, V. Jax, Parker (for now), Davis, and Naanee, I think I have good reason. (Not to mention Gates at TE who can split out if needed.)

I'm hoping
he has a breakout year. He was starting to see more action last year, but ran the wrong route at a very inopportune time and got in the doghouse. Hopefully with a year of practice under his belt he is going to live up to his reputation. Norv likes to go down field more than Marty ever did and everyone has a year of his scheme under their belt now, they should be more productive next year; but ya never know. I think that was also one of the reasons the Bolts got rid of LoNeal, a great blocker but not a threat receiving. The Broncos and Chargers should both be great at WR next year; it should make for great watching.

I see now
Why you have been so excited about the Bolts’ receiving corps. Legedu Naanee sounds like and interesting prospect. I’ll be keeping an eye on him this season. It’s always good to learn more about our rivals. It sounds like the Chargers have been stockpiling injured top talent and letting them heal/develop. Seems like a sound strategy for maintaining a dominant level of talent. Kinda similar to what the Patriots do, trading away their picks every year for two the next year. If they keep it up, they are going to end up with every pick in the 2012 draft, lol.
Thanks for a great post!

This year
we had a pretty thin draft; fortunately we didn’t need too much. Next year we should get an extra third and fourth for Florence and Turner. AJ does like projects that take a while to develop, Cromartie (even though he was a first rounder) was one. It’s nice to be able to take chances on talent and let them develop before throwing them in the cauldron. I’m hoping AJ can keep it up, the Colts and the Patriots both do a great job at keeping their essential personnel while drafting the best talent.

That is sad. I was hoping somebody would take a chance on him. They had an article in the Union on him; but he made so many poor decisions I could understand why he wasn’t getting picked up. You hate to see somebody with potential throw it away.

i heard this morning
I was shocked
also do ya think Foley deserves to get the 10 mill in the settlement? I dont
by broncfanstuckinsd on Jul 5, 2008 4:08 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Really not sure
It seems like both acted stupidly. 10 million is a lot of money, I hadn’t heard that amount before. I don’t know enough of the facts to have a firm opinion, but something seems out of whack when off duty police shoot unarmed folks, even stupid ones. The one juror I saw interviewed seemed to think Foley had a good claim based on what he saw, so maybe the city was smart to settle.

i agree
but his whole case for suing was lost wages. I dont think Foley was gonna stick around long enuff in the NFL to earn 10mill. He was on a 1 yr deal for $750k when he got shot. I dunno he plead to his DUI. Sure the police officer was probably wrong and Foley was, but 10 mill that the tax payers has to end up paying. I just dont like the amount of loot he gets
by broncfanstuckinsd on Jul 5, 2008 8:24 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
True
That is a lot of money for somebody who was drunk and stupid. He would probably be good for maybe five years at around 750, call it 3.25 million. But then jurors tend to award pain & suffering, medical expenses, and sometimes punitive awards just to try and keep other cities from hiring careless cops. If somebody can get millions for a cup of coffee spilled on them, a couple bullets and the end of an NFL career might have been huge. The legal system does seem out of whack and it makes folks all to ready to sue, I do think some kind of reform is in order.

I agree
Plus I did enjoy this post of yours. I think if Jackson starts slow, like he has evry season Davis could get a golden opportunity. Oliver could be a nice player. But I am not a proponent of taking players in the supplemental. We will see what happens with him. The only problem I see with Nanee is who is in front of him on the depth chart. Not really saying anyhting about the kid. Its just being behind arguably the best TE in NFL hurts him for mory playing time. That is unless Gates toe is not 100%

Nice List.
As a Gator and fan of the SEC, I watched several of the guys you mentioned above. In fact, I thought of almost all of them as viable prospects for my Broncos in their respective drafts. I think the Chargers do a great job building depth by taking chances on talent (drafting injured players or those with academic/personal difficulties) looking to wait for them or helpnig them develope into stars. On paper, you’re the best team in the West and perhaps in the entire AFC, but that’s been true for some time, I think.

Craig Davis' real nickname.....
Is “bust”. Nobody was going to even think about drafting that guy until the 3rd or 4th round. Nobody escapes the long reach of AJ Smith.

They were saying he was a bust
last year too. No wait, he wasn’t playing yet, who was it they saying that about? Oh yes, Antonio Cromartie who didn’t play at all his rookie year and was very uneven in his second year. ;-)
It seems like a lot of the draft sites had Buster going around the 40th pick, I don’t remember anyone putting him in the fourth round, but AJ isn’t afraid to buck the crowds. He wasn’t the impact player they hoped for in his rookie year, but I’m not going to call him a bust till at least the end of the 2009 season. He showed some real flair near the end of last season.
