The Importance of this Weekend
Okay...so it's clear at this point that nobody at MHR wants to talk about it! I understand, all of the hope and optimism of the offseason could come crashing down and reality will be forced upon us in a three hour period. It may be only preseason, but this weekends game against Dallas is extremely important.
At this time last year, there was a major buzz surrounding the Broncos. We had made some huge (pun only partially intended) offseason acquisitions; and, at the time, it was popular opinion that those additions very well could be the final pieces of the championship puzzle.
Then came the preseason game against Dallas. I don't need to relate what happened in that game...I know we all remember it. In short, we were dominated! Physically, mentally, athletically, strategically...we were dominated on every level. "This isn't indicative of the quality of our team", we told ourselves. The coaches and players argued that Dallas had unfairly game planned that game. Jim Bates said that the defense looked nothing like the defense we would see in the regular season. The Broncos were demoralized and panicking (and complaining incessantly)!!!
As we all now know, that game turned out to be extremely indicative of the season that followed it. Our defense was horrendous. We were out played on every level and it followed us into the season. The Broncos know the impact that game had on the team last year...and they will be looking to ensure a different result. This will be an early test of just how good this team really is. Yes, I know several of our starters won't be playing. However, this game will tell us if we have the attitude and the will necessary to be a legitimate contender. It doesn't matter if we win or lose...but it does matter how we play the game.
We need to look good this weekend...No more excuses!!!

I agree somewhat...
but you do have to remember Dallas was the number 1 team in the NFC last season, and should be darn good again this year. I think with the number of injuries, a weak regular season schedule and the ongoing process of building some continuity even if they perform poorly it doesn’t end all hope.

With last weekend's performance...
...not looking particularly good. I think we need to bounce back and make a strong showing (especially with our 1st and 2nd teams). If we don’t…it may be time to start preparing for a long season. We need to show that we have the tenacity and attitude, if not the talent, to pop Dallas in the mouth and play some good ol’ fasion hard-nose football. We need to show we are not a china doll of a team (pretty and fragile) but we can exchange some punches…and just as importantly, ENJOY IT!!!!

Remember, though, that the first and last games of the preseason are the least indicative of how the season will play out.
This is a very important game for us. We have a lot of young players that need to come together, most of whom are still working out the kinks of a new defensive system. A win, or at least a positive showing against the frontrunner to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl would do wonders for their confidence.
Who knows, if we win this game, count me in to enter the La-La-Land-of-the-Preseason-Feel-Goods.

Forgot to mention
That while the 1st and last are not important, the 2nd and especially the 3rd are very indicative of a team’s potential.

Regardless of win...
If the defense looks tough and gritty, stops the run, and can keep Dallas’ passing game in check and the offense can move the ball efficiently…I may take a little vacation in lala land myself.

I'll make you a reservation.
Michael Fabiano really knows nothing about football outside of regression analysis and stat extrapolation. If it doesn’t have to do with fantasy football, his opinion is worthless.

I voted Somewhat, because . . .
it is game 2 and not game 3 of the pre-season. So our starters will only play a half, instead of 3 quarters. And, I also voted somewhat because we might still be missing some important starters – Nalen, D-Rob, Champ, Hamza, Boss.
Either way, I will guarantee fans that we will play better than we did last year, for the following reasons. Number one, they are on our turf, in our stadium dealing with our environment (altitude). Number two, we will be prepared for the blitzes this year, and JC will not be stopped. Number three, Slowik will stop the run more than last year simply by virtue of the commitment of more men in the box.
However, I expect them to be able to pass on us cause we will not have Champ, Hamza, and Boss. And I do not expect us to run real well on them either, as our run game is still developing. Our strength is passing, and most of camp is geared more to the passing game. I mean you gotta go full pads to really work on the run game. And thanks to a lousy back up QB, we will probably lose the game.
But as long as JC and our starting offense passes and scores, and as long our defense stops their run, then I believe that is a victory and a sign things are hopeful for the season.

Agreed.
However, I vote that is was very important for this very reason. I could really care less about 3rd string giving up touchdowns to a 3rd string Dallas offense. However, First Team O and D play I think is very important.

If this were next week....
I’d agree a bit more. I will say that every game should be important. Not for wins and losses, but for creating an attitude, creating a culture of positivity. The Broncos need to take advantage of every opportunity to get on the field and build that confidence.
That said, I am still in “just keep everyone healthy” mode. Next week against Green Bay, when the 1st Team plays 3 quarters or so, is the one I am looking forward to. I will be looking for the Broncos to play harder against the Cowboys than they did last year. No let ups. Finish every tackle. If they do that, I’ll be satisfied.

Nobody wants injuries...
I just fear that the “just keep everyone health” approach is the same one that got us injured and demoralized in the preseason last year. I think you can go too soft. This is a football team after all. I fear that no full pads and hitting in camp creates the “china doll” team mentioned above. I want to see the Broncos play angry. I want to see a team that looks pissed off!!! I want to see a team that can create fear in their opponent. Teams don’t just turn that on when the season starts…either you have it or you don’t.

I agree with you there...
And said as much. I have written and talked on the podcast about the Broncos getting their mean-streak on right from the beginning.
I didn’t think last weeks game was that bad. There were some mental mistakes by young O-linemen, that is going to happen. The 1st Team offense, after a bad first possession, took the ball right down the field and the defense did a solid job, for the most part, in the first half.
I have talked many times about playing mad and hoped that would be the case. I just don’t put too much weight in the final score. Now that your position is clarified I agree.

I think this game will be an important benchmark when we compare it to our
performance last season. Although next week is the most important week, no doubt this weekend will rank second on importance out of the four preseason games we play.

It's important
It doesn’t matter if we win or lose…but it does matter how we play the game.
That’s the thing, we needn’t win, but we darn well better show up. I want to see how our 1st & 2nd teams do.
Also, even if it’s the preseason, we should be looking for a little payback. Punch them in the mouth, let them know we aren’t going to be pushed around. Show some attitude/heart. Let me know that this team cares. They humiliated us last year, I want to see some Broncos Pride out there.

the Dallas game
will be more evaluations and maybe the 1st team plays more than 2 series but not much. The true test IMO will be game #3. Thats when the starters will play 3 qtrs or there about. That is what I look to. Last year I was optomistic about the defense until the Browns and Quinn ran all thru the d. Plus that game also showcased SY in case Henry got hurt. Which he did. I just want to see improvement and no injuries

To add a little fuel to the fire...
CBS4 is reporting that when asked Pacman Jones how BMarsh compared to Terrell (he’s my quarterback) Owens, Pacman responded,
“He’s nowhere near T.O.,” Jones said of Marshall. “He’s a good athlete, but he ain’t on T.O.’s level. T.O. is 10 times faster and 10 times bigger. I wouldn’t say he’s nowhere near T.O.”
I know that Jones isn’t an itelligent individual…but 10 times bigger? C’mon? That seems like an exaggeration!!! 10 times bigger? THAT’S HUGE!!!!
In reality…we need to put a hurtin’ on these guys.

"I wouldn't say he's nowhere near T.O"?
So…he is near T.O.?
I’m confused…I thought you said he was nowhere near T.O.?
What are you saying? Also, I checked the Cowboys website and he is not 10 time bigger the BMarsh.
Have you been drug tested lately?

104.3 the fan
I’ve been listening to Irv and Joe on 104.3 this afternoon and, as usual, they seem to be oblivious that their audience is Broncos fans. Three statements in particular stand out. First, they said watching the Broncos scrimmage against the Cowboys is like watching a Varsity team play against a JV team. Second, they said that for the Cowboys this year it’s SB or bust…and the Broncos will not make the playoffs. Third, they said we don’t have a single starter, maybe Champ Bailey, who could start for the Cowboys.
At want point did the local media get a green light to bash the Broncos at every opportunity? These guys report that the Broncos won’t make the playoffs like it’s an empirical fact (I guys spouting their stupid opinion is their definition of being “objective”. They can’t shut up about the how good the Cowboys look. I think they are in love with the Cowboys. I am sick of the local media, in particular 104.3 and Bernie Lincicome, bashing the Broncos at every chance they get. When the Broncos do well these guys will be saying they saw it coming all along. What a bunch *(#&$ idiots!!!

Man
Thats the same crap I hear about the Broncos here in San Diego. See I expect that here in this pos of a town, but not at home. I feel for ya! I was reading where even the Dallas papers were saying how #15 was abusing Jones, and how D-rob was doing good. Plus there was praise for Royal, where he could not get jammed at the line, and where Bly (i am shocked) was doing a good job jamming guys. Also that JC is gonna be the real deal. One more thing that Colbert was beating Pac Man. Gotta love it

I haven't heard...
an optimistic perspective on 104.3 all preseason except for Scott Hastings and Big Al Williams those guys are awesome…if you get a chance check em out 1-3 I don’t think they get many listeners because they are constantly talking about how they don’t get any interviews or support from the station.

days if he wants to get depressed he will listen to 104.3. He wont listen to that station at all, He says he listens to ESPN radio. He goes he knows what to expect from the natl media.

104.3 and Local Media
The Broncos are the easiest target for these guys. Nobody will ready anything about the Rockies, Nuggets, or Avs, even during their seasons. The Broncos are as scrutinized as they are because they are the #1 topic of conversation 365 days a year and they can’t talk about Cutler being the “real deal” or Brandon Marshall’s legal trouble anymore because they’ve beat any logical topic to a pulp already.
These guys are people who have the job they have because they draw you into a false sense of loyalty to the hometown team and then slander the same team for each and every move they make. It’s their job to question everything and that’s what keeps their call lines lit up.
You have to take local media with a grain of salt. Denver is a small town media market compared to the big media hubs and that’s why all of the personalities have to be so strong and abrasive.
Although Denver is desperately in need of some new on air sports radio talent, you have the warm blanket of MHR in the meantime. We may be homers and we may be biased, but we certainly have our share of skeptics and posters who bring us down to earth.
The reality is that is sounds like Denver took it to Dallas today and the bottom line is that the opposite happened a year ago. Go ahead and get excited. No question about it, the Broncos have a spring in their step and will be a much imporved team in 2008.

All this talk about 104.3...
This is such a huge difference from any radio station here in KC. All morning long, I hear about how the Chiefs have the best young talent in the league and if they don’t make the Super Bowl by 2011 it will create a major rift in time and space and the universe will be rent apart.
Guess what, guys? You were a 4-12 team last year!! 4-12!!! That sucks! You cannot win a game with no quarterback. I don’t care if Brodie Croyle (Jeez, that is a stupid name) and Tyler Thigpen (yes, Tyler Thigpen) look like the second coming of Christ in camp. Guess who else looks all-world in camp? Rex Grossman! That is your future, KC. Live with it.
/end rant. That was a good one.
My favorite is when they play the Raiders. We have a DJ named NeanderPaul who is a huge Raiders fan. Every time the Raiders come here and beat up on the Chiefs, he blasts them hard on the air. It makes me sooo happy.

I voted for Unimportant
What happens in the future is completely independent of what happens this week, We could get killed 65-0, and that fact considered alone would have no bearing upon anything going forward.
Now, that being said, I’d like to see a good performance, and I expect to see one. Remember that our team is young, and still learning in a lot of places. I’d be happy to see some progress and improvement, and then some more each week going forward. If our team is peaking in December into January, that would be okay with me.

65-0? Seriously...
I’m not expecting to see the ‘98 Broncos roll up on Dallas this weekend but 65-0? Wasn’t it disgraceful enough that the D-boys added injury to insult last year. Even though it was game 2 of the pre-season last year I had the sense after that game we had, ‘serious’ issues. The whole game-planning excuse was a major red flag to me!
I think this game means a ton this week…. and I agree with the part of the MHR camp that the final score isn’t everything. But I guarantee if the score ends up 65 – goose egg in favor of Dallas a pandemic outcry will be heard throughout Bronco nation demanding a complete front office change. Here’s giving a big shout out the Mile High Salute is alive and well this weekend!

65-0 wasn't a prediction
It was an extremely improbable potential outcome which I employed in my point that the final score Saturday has no absolutely no bearing on future results. Individual football games are independent of each other, that is, once one is over, there is no residual continuing effect from the last one to the next one. An injury that happened in one game can affect a future game, but the result as expressed by the final score, in and of itself, has no bearing on anything.
In Week 5 of the 2006 regular season, the Jets got throttled 41-0 by the Jaguars. They proceeded to win their next two games, and later their last 3 of the season, to ultimately finish 10-6 and make the playoffs. The Jaguars lost to a bad Houston team 27-7 the following week, and later, lost their last 3 games of the season, and they finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs. This example illustrates the INDEPENDENT nature of football games.
We may all imagine that there is an emotional component at play, and there may be to some extent. Our team gets 16 individual, separate chances this season to win football games, though, and that’s what I meant.

It's still preseason
There are years that teams like the Pats and Steelers go 0-4 in the preseason and still win the Super Bowl, so take it with a grain of salt, did Dallas game plan, maybe, I am sure Wade Phillips still has some anger at Bowlen and the Broncos for firing him, and he is probably like Shannan and wants to stick it to his ex-employers. So I really don’t care if the Cowboys win or not, I just want to see the lines (D and O) improve from last week and show they have learned, our run defense needs to improve, and if we can score in the red zone, that will be important. I am sure our game plan will be vanilla, Shannan doesn’t every show anything too much in preseason. So don’t get too worked up about the outcome.
