"Pacman" or Adam. Either way, he got owned.
I think we all enjoyed the banter between Adam "Pacman" Jones (DAL CB) and our own Brandan Marshall during joint practices leading up to the 2nd preseason game this year. Despite the onfield back and forth between the two, there is no real animosity.
Still, it is nice to see our guy come out on top when it really matters.
It's great to know that Brandon is recovered from his arm "incident", and also great to know that Royal can cover in Brandon's absense. The linked article goes on to talk about other game highlights, including one of our punters tackling Jones, while the other punter picked up his own blocked punt and scampered down the field for a nice, long first down.
I'm feeling it people! I already knew we had a Superbowl caliber offense, and my only worries have been defense and STs. I'm not going to get overly excited because of one preseason game (it can be easy to do). Still, we played a very physical team, and we did a great job. The offense doesn't worry me in the least.

Special teams
Eddie Royal is fast becoming too valuable as a wide out to risk injury by letting him return kicks/punts.
Also, Jay Cutler is fast becoming the best QB in the league.

I'd just like to arrogantly point out that I said Royal would be a bonified starter, not just a slot guy.
I was waaayyy off on my prediction of him taking over the starting role by the end of the season….try by the first game of the preseason!!! lol

I can say when I'm wrong.
I know it’s easy to get excited by every draft pick a team gets. Royal is a perfect example. He wasn’t even on our radar before he was picked (folks seemed kind of ticked that we kept passing over DTs too), and all of a sudden folks were loving every pick we had.
In the case of Royal, he looked very valuable as a returner, and not strong enough to take a constant beating. I had him pegged as a returner, and the slot (once Stokley moves on). I wouldn’t have risked him as a wideout.
However, seeing what he’s done in camp and the preseason, he certainly looks like wideout material. I was also blindsided by seeing neither Colbert or Jackson do better (than Royal). Sometimes it’s good to be wrong! The only thing that would prove my previous assesment (and I hope I was wrong on that too) is that he might be a little fragile if he takes too many hits in games.

That is exactly my worry with Royal:
He’s just a little guy and he takes some serious hits from what I saw last night and what I’ve heard in training camp.
And if Ramsey would ever lay him out like the way he did to Martinez, it could be game over for that little slugger.
Michael Fabiano really knows nothing about football outside of regression analysis and stat extrapolation. If it doesn’t have to do with fantasy football, his opinion is worthless.

As a comparison...
,,, Steve Smith of the Carolina Panthers (in the league since 2001) is 5’9" and 185. Royal is 5’10" and 182.

Royal is tough
if that is your only concern for this kid, forget about it. He is a brick (bleep)house. A small one, obviously, but still built out of brick.
Just like guys who are big but are never durable throughout their career (Henry) Royal is a guy who is small but has been durable throughout his career.
His two most consistent traits in college were his hands and his toughness (I’m not counting speed, but I suppose you could say that too)

The more I hear about this guy
the more I love that we picked him. I remember on draft day that everyone thought that we “reached” to get him, and that they were “shocked” that we didn’t go after a DT. Well now it looks like Royal’s going to be starting WR potential. So what now, draft pundits?

I'm glad we got him.
He looks like a steal now. Still, I hope that DRob and Thomas work out. If not, we’ll have to go the “FA well” for a bandaid.

DT...
I know everyone’s excited about Royal, but the only DT we drafted was a late-round pick who is out for the year. Thinking that people should eat crow because Eddie’s looked good before a single meaningful snap has been taken is all fine and dandy, but you can’t knock people for faulting Denver’s front office for passing on so many DTs so many times. Only time will tell whether our apparent #2 WR will be enough to overcome a dire lack of depth and possible overall weakness in the middle of our D-line. And now that he’ll be counted on to start on the offense, it seems as though the benefits to our return gain may be washed away. Again, hate to rain on people’s parade (call me the Weather Man of La-La Land) but it’s just the way I see it right now.

As a defense guy myself,
…who shared your desire for a DT in the reloading season, I agree. But everything is a tradeoff too.
Consider this. If a player becomes so great at a certain position (like WR) that he can’t be spared in another area of need (like PR), that’s a good thing. In our case, it looks lke we may now have a WR tandem that is so elite that the offense has become SB capable, and young enough to sustain that level for the next ten years.
Where does that leave our other positions? It leaves them as narrower areas of focus the next time we go after a FA or a trade (and we still have time before the 6 week deadline). At least now we have secured the offense at an extreme level, and for years to come. Now we can almost focus entirely on defense for the next couple of years.
I also think (despite a lot of natural preseason excitement) that this is a rebuilding year (something that Denver fans aren’t used to). While we may have a playoff shot, our deep run should be ’09 or ’10, with multiple shots after that.
Last, while we didn’t go after DTs (DRob being our only real addittion), we also changed the scheme to fit the guys we DO have. They should be better this year playing a system that matches their skill sets.

If toughness is one of his traits Styg,
…then I see little to nothing to be concerned about. We now have a 1, 2, 3 punch in our slot sets.

One of the guys who expected good things from him as a returner not a WR, this year. But I will be so happy to be wrong about that

We'd better look good against the Packers.
They just lost 34-6 to San Francisco. HEH!
My all new official la-la land prediction: The Broncos go 12-2-2, win the AFC West, and beat the Rams in the Super Bowl.

Lou Saban said "Half a loaf is better than none"
It was after a game with the Dolphins in 1971. Denver could have won the game but Saban went for the tie instead. After the game Saban said the famous quote “Half a loaf is better than none”. The next home game, Saban was pelted with Half Loaves of Bread on the sideline and it continued up until his departure from the Broncos mid season that year.

It's la-la-land!
that means that whatever I say won’t happen. Think about it. If I predict that we will beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl, a team that could very well get to the Super Bowl, that means they will make it and we will not. If I say we will beat the Rams, then the football gods will ignore me for being stupid. So I will predict 2 ties without really hoping we actually get 2 ties. See?

Since 1973 tie games are rare
When the NFL adopted the OT sudden death rule, only one OT period is allowed. If no team scores it’s a tie. Only 16 games have ended in a tie since the rule change. The first as history would have it was Denver vs the Steelers in 1974; The very first regular season NFL game to go into overtime under the new rule,
Pittsburgh and Denver played the league’s first five-quarter game as neither team was able to score in the extra period despite a missed 41-yard field goal by the Broncos’ Jim Turner, resulting in a tie.
Fifteen games have ended in a tie since that Denver / Pitt game. The last time was in 2002 with Pittsburgh vs Atlanta 34-34. Of the 16 games, Denver was involved in two: The game against the Steelers in 1974 35-35, and in 1987 against the Packers 17-17.
