Another Peter King Non Sequitur
From today's Monday Morning Quarterback Column -
g. Jay Cutler completed his first 12 throws against Dallas. Matt Schaub hit on 12 of his first 14. The thing about preseason football is those could mean everything and those could mean nothing. For instance, Favre was given diverse and daunting formations in the 20 plays he had to know for Saturday night, but no throw he made was a challenging deep ball. "I should be able to complete those,'' he said. And you never know whether the defense is showing very much in the preseason either. So I wouldn't be feeling like you've got to think of changing your preseason opinion of Cutler or Schaub just yet.
This is a classic PK logic nightmare, and non sequitur is Latin for "it doesn't follow." He starts with impressive statistics for two players he evidently doesn't like. Then he makes a statement that is logically analagous to "it is and it isn't." Then he gives an example of Brett Favre checking down on nearly every throw. Next is the statement that you never know what the defense is doing in preseason (especially if you don't watch the film, Peter.) Finally comes the assertion that, assuming you think Cutler and and Schaub suck (and evidently EVERYBODY does,) you have PK's estimable permission to continue thinking so, despite their good performances this weekend.
Our old friend Peter has some value, in the sense that he has good sources, and also that he does a fair job of repeating what those sources tell him. But he needs to quit thinking his opinion is very meaningful when it's clear from what he writes that he didn't watch the film of what he is talking about. Follow the logic here:
Cutler and Schaub suck -> They played well this weekend -> This is a potential problem because it indicates they don't suck -> Oh, wait it's preseason -> Sometimes defenses don't show complex coverage in preseason -> They still must suck
I didn't see Schaub's performance, but I like him as a player better than Peter does. It would be inappropriate for me to take up for him, without having seen him play. I did see Jay, and he did throw the ball down the field. That dart that he put ON Eddie Royal between double coverage stands out, and also the throw on the opening drive where Royal double-moved Mike Jenkins and beat him down the sideline. Jay averaged 8.9 yards per attempt, which is superb, and is readily available from the stat sheet that Peter obviously perused. He looked as good as a QB can look, for the second straight game, and as he consistently has throughout camp.
Here's my fun logic flow. I hope you like it.
Peter King is a repeater of information, not a source of original insight -> He doesn't have very much technical football knowledge at all -> Not to mention, he's a total Boston homer -> He's also pretty much a tool who doesn't understand that a factoid is something which is believed to be a fact, but is not actually a fact, so how smart could he really be? -> He didn't watch the film anyway, like usual, and like most NFL-wide columnists -> His opinion is meaningless, as usual -> We shouldn't care what he thinks about this topic, and his credibility on all matters is impaired.
Have a great post-victory Monday, Broncos fans.

Did he just compare...
Cutler to Matt Schaub?? And even worse, he found a way to bring Brett Favre into the equation?!?
As Ted says, Cutler didn’t check the ball down 12 times. He made every throw, short, long, intermediate and was on time and on the mark with all of them. Yes, there are things about the Broncos I have a “wait and see” approach about, but Jay Cutler is not one of them.

I love this post Ted...
I have had the longest running beef with PK. Last year, I blogged elsewhere about the Broncos and one week, I decided to rant on PK, I realized by week 10 or 11 that his lead story and photo were about The Pats or a Pats player 8 or 9 of the 11 weeks or something.
Moreover, he is the essence of why people don’t like sportswriters. He writes for New England. His work belongs in the Boston Herald. In regards to actual football talk, he pumps up newsworthy players (Favre, VY, anyone on the Pats) and doesn’t shed light on anyone who his readers either don’t know much about or don’t care much about (anyone who plays for Denver).
The thing that really sickens me about guys like this is his propensity to fawn over EVERYTHING Pats-related. John Lynch signs with the Pats, PK’s take is that its a great marriage of class adding even more class. Pete, just FYI, the Pat’s aren’t the “class” of anything, nor do they have “class”, their new Safety will be out"classed" all season. Lynch was a favorite of mine until I realized 2 years ago that he always made the big hit because he was always two steps late on every pass completion. When’s the last time you saw #47 break up a pass? 2005?
He basically writes an “US Weekly” or “People” magazine article about the NFL. Popular and local stuff. That’s it.
We need to realize (self very much included) that the national media will absolutely NOT give the Broncos, Cutler, or Shanny much love until they prove that they more than deserve it this year. Think about it, maybe the writers are peeved that they have been on the Broncos bandwagon for a few years and all Denver’s done is made them look bad.
Whatever the reason, I’m just keeping it dialed in right here at MHR.com seeing as how not even the Denver Post could muster up a story about anything more than Brett Kern this Monday morning. Yikes!

Schaub.
While I have no idea what Brett Farve has to do with what Peter King was talking about, I don’t think the Cutler/Schaub comparison is as ridiculous as it may seem. In fact, the two young QB were #12 and #13 respectively in the QB rating leaderboard. We must also take into consideration that Matt was in his first season as a starter and with a new organization, that he dealt with injuries and was without his top WR in 6 of his 11 appearances. I have Cutler as the #5 QB in the league (behind Brady, Manning, Roethlisberger and Romo), so he’s without a doubt in my mind better than Schaub, but Matt’s also probably in the Top Ten at the position. Just my two cents.
P.S.: Cutler has seemingly avoid the Denver media blackout, because last season I recall some people in the media predicting a Pro Bowl season and this year ESPN thinks he’ll be a Top Ten fantasy QB.

Does it suprise anyone
He would somehow HAVE to get that mediawhore Favre into any conversation. I quit reading that clown last year havent read him since. I dont mind he never gives Denver any love or hate, but crap, all he does is gush over NE, Favre, Romo. I dont care about his friggin coffee, crappy NJ, some stupid travel problem. He is about as useless as a one legged man in a butt kicking contest

I’m okay with PK as a source of general info on the NFL, especially eastern teams, but he does usually put his foot in his mouth when he says anything about the Broncos.
My biggest beef with him is he’s a voter on the HOF committee that hates the Broncos.

Dr. Z is a huge axe-grinder though
He definitely knows the game, but he has a lot of biases that filter what he sees. An example is his historical unwillingness to name Champ Bailey to his All-Pro team because “there’s always been something cockamamie about his game.” Dominating half the field from off-coverage isn’t too cockamamie to me, but it’s the curmudgeonly old Doc. He’s definitely better than PK, though.

I can't help my self
I hate what King writes, but I can’t stop reading his colums. What I like best about the above mentioned paragraph, is that he earlier in the article writes something to the effect, that Titans fans should be worried, because VY completed so few passes. Still the rest of us should not get excited when Cutler completes so many. Go figure.
I like Z slightly better.
My favorite national sports writer by far is foxsports Adam Schein – video style (make hand gesture). It might be because he tries to stay up beat about most teams, and that he in general seems to be a positive and likeable person.

Oops, I accidentally voted for "No way."
I submitted my vote before I read the question. Let’s call it a preseason mistake.
But yeah, Peter King sucks.

Cutler proved himself last year.
He did it despite a slew of injuries to those around him, and despite an untreated illness. He continues to prove himself now, and pundits with little knowledge of the game will continue to make excuses for their ignorance.
