The DP reports - Nalen to have more surgery
This can not be good. They hope to have him back for the season opener. They are calling it a "clean up" surgery. I have said it before. I will say it again. I think he might be done. Not just for the season but for his career. I was surprised he came back in the first place. I thought for sure he was going to retire after the bicep injury. I want to be positive about this. I always try to stay positive, but this really can't be good. Somebody make me feel better please!

But remember Mark Schlereth must have had about one hundred or so.

I agree but have some faith
Sad to say, but it might be the end of Nalen career, which would be a true loss, I am wondering though, if Nalen leaves why not move Hamilton over to Center (that is his true position), move Kuper to LG, and put Holland back in at RG. I like that lineup alot, although I am not sold on Harris at RT.

Good news is...
you’ve got a good one in Wiegmann to handle things if he is done

Don't loose hope
Schereth had several “clean-ups” and managed to bounce back.

I specialize in good news.....and here it is.......?
We seem to look good without Nalen—but I’m not counting him out. My bet is that if he cannot start opening game he goes pup and comes in later to spell Wiegmann later in the season.
Then, after we win almost all our regular season games (13-3 baby), Nalen helps us win all our playoff games, the game after the playoffs, and we are all happy!

sorry,...
but i’m afraid he is done. i’ve been preparing for it since the ota’s, and unfortunately, it looks like i may be right on that. even if he suits up this season, i don’t think he’ll make it through. another team leader to replace, but i do like wiegmann for a season or 2(nice move by shanny), until somebody is ready to grab the reigns long-term. hopefully that will be hamilton, he seems to be ok so far, which is great news. kuper and holland at the guards, with hamilton at center, looks pretty mean to me, also. but for this season, it will be wiegmann, who is actually really good. not the end of the world, but man, are the old ties getting severed this year or what? either way, this is the last season for nails, another bronco staple and future hall-of-famer(he will make it)

i hope you're right,
we could use his leadership and expertise with the new o-line. i just don’t see it happening, really. just being truthful, call it a gut feeling. but if anyone can beat this thing, it’s nails. i’m hopeful, but doubtful on this one

Young Player Development
Assuming Nalen will be forced to retire, this could be beneficial for our young players to establish themselves in the huddle. Nalen’s leadership can’t be replaced, especially because he played such a crucial position. But I see this as logical progression. We’re a young team. This would essentially eliminate veteran leadership and let the young guns takes over fully. Again, assuming he retires, Nalen’s presence will be missed this season. But I look at this as an opportunity for the players like Cutler to develop even faster than they already are.

Good point
Although we have a good shot at the wildcard this year (and perhaps better, but the WC at least) we have a far better chance of running the table next year, and perhaps for some years to come. That said, we might well want to do as much player development this year as possible. This has been discussed here on MHR several times, but it seems that circumstances keep bringing up the point. If Nails retires, although I think we’d be fortunate to have him this year, Weigmann seems to be the next choice, but would we be better grooming Hamilton at C, bringing on Steiger da Ten Tigers (nice on, styg50!) as a guard and having Steiger/Kuper, Holland, Hams and the Ryans at the tackles? We could go a long way with that lineup.

Very much agree.
I don’t see this as the great year a lot of folks are. I think we are building towards a run in ’09 and onwards, and part of the building process that would help is getting our OL positions down and getting our youth experience now. As great as Nalen as, I see two reasons for retirement.
One, I admire the guy and all he has done for us, and don’t want to see him seriously injured. He’s had enough surgeries that I was sure he would retire at the end of last year (I might still end up with partial credit for the prediction). And two, we need get experience and training in for the guys we will rely on for the next ten or more years.

I think if we get 3/4 thru the season....
…and it’s clear at that point that this is not our year, then we’ll see some of the young guys start to get reps.
Therefore, I hope we don’t see those guys this year!

Would Nails be good coaching material?
I like Dennison, but I think someone that actually played the O-Line would be be better at coaching our young guys in to the next decade than a former LB. He could give a lot of help to whomever takes over at Center in making line calls
