Shawne Merriman

Well the news from cloudy San diego today is that Merriman has a torn PCL. He went to see Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday and got the results last night. This is a big blow to the Chargers. Merriman then went to NY for an opinion and is headed to Miami for yet another opinion. He has 3 options a scope which really wont do anything more than delay his season, play, or get a recontruct. Also to add he is a free agent after the 2009 season. Now if that isnt bad enough the local fishwrap here had an article today stating that the marrige here in San Diego between Merriman and AJ Smith is not all that rosy. Merriman this season will tape a football show on Fox Sports net on Thursday. No active player has ever done that. The speculation around here is that he is probably going to get a recontruct miss the season so he will be healthy for his contract season. I think this affects the Chargers in profound ways, one it loses the best player at sacking the QB since 2005. He has 39.5 sacks in that time. It also will affect how teams attack the chargers. Plus it now will give Denver even a better chance at winning the AFC West, IMO. How big of a story is this, me I think its HUGE

I hate to be happy about an injury,

but I also hate to pull for a guy who used roids (including Romonowski). One thing is for sure, this can’t hurt our chances in the west.

His numbers seemed to taper off once he got off Roids.

I still think that will make it easier for Jay and Co to attack SD. Also, the rest of the SD schedule will try and take advantage.

Hopefully DaBolts will chime in and give his thoughts.

The Chargers aren't as good

without him. He really didn’t taper off much after the suspension. In the three games prior to his injury he racked up 6 sacks and put up 12.5 for the year. In 2006 he had 17, but in four less games but keep in mind that Wade blitzed far more than Cottrell.

The backups are good, we may find out how good. The most likely player will be Jyles Tucker. He filled in for him after Merriman got hurt originally. That week against the Raiders he picked up 3.5 sacks, had a forced fumble and was the AFC defensive player of the week. He obviously won’t put up numbers like that every week, but in training camp he seems to show some real chops. The other OLB is Marques Harris, he is pretty athletic, you may have seen him do flips after a sack, usually makes the highlight reels. He is quick, but doesn’t get the sack numbers, he will likely back up Tucker and Phillips now. Both are a step down, but the real question is if Merriman goes for the full reconstruction. There is no doubt that when healthy he is a game changer.

While I didn’t see a decline after the suspension, Merriman was hampered after his injury, in the last five games he had just two sacks and a handful of tackles, the defense was still fairly stout. During that stretch San Diego gave up a total of 55 points or just 11 per game. No matter how you slice it though, you just can’t replace a pro bowler.

Bad News

I hate to break the news to you Jon, but you can’t drive to Cordova any more. The road was destroyed by the earthquake in ’64 and has never been rebuilt. Are you planning on taking the ferry? Do you have seservations? They can be tough to get this time of year.

Not to mention...

LDT is saying he is still having issues with his knee.

Also not to mention, Norv Turner is a moron!

Also Also not to mention, Phyliss is a moron too!!!

I think the injury bug is catching up to the Chargers

Gates and his little piggy still isn’t 100%…Rivers knee…LT’s heart… perhaps merriman is foreshadowing things to come… if that’s the case and our Defense can improve, we have a great chance to take the division….

I wish Woody Paige was our coach!

Certainly can’t hurt us. I didn’t vote though. San Diego still has a lot of talent. Let’s say I’m cautiously optimistic and if Merriman doesn’t play I’ll be a smidge more optimistic.

Music to my ears.

This is our year and we WILL take this division!!

All of our injuries are basically minor. This aleviates much of my concern going into week 2 without B Marsh.

Hit him high and low away from the play and after the whistle. They were fined, but fines are really just pocket change these days.

by Brian (DaBolts) on Aug 22, 2008 11:39 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is true.

fines can’t begin to make up for some of the damage plays can cause a player. This could trickle into Merriman’s FA status (as in, the level of play that he is at when he hits FA), it obviously affects the starting roster going into 08, and the Charger’s organization as a whole loses a key contributor.

I will say this though, if SD ever learns to be consistent, they need to start this year. I don’t think Denver is going to spot them the first half of the season like they did last year. (We spotted em the second half as well, but SD was taking care of their business by that point….)

by Steve Nichols on Aug 23, 2008 5:46 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Merriman is just a guy trying to make a living by playing in the NFL.

Just like everyone on the Chargers, Broncos, Raiders, or anywhere else. He’s a guy with a family that he’s trying to provide for. In order to play better to make more money and provide more for his family, he decided to use steroids. Do I agree with his choice? Absolutely not, it was a bad one. But to wish ill on a guy who’s just out there playing football because it’s his career is wrong.

Consider this: Say a mailman breaks his both his wrists in a fall and can’t drive the mail truck. He is cut off from his income and, doubled with the medical bills he has to pay, he falls into debt. In order to try and cope with this, he starts drinking and becomes an aldoholic. His wife divorces him, and his life has become a train wreck. Was it all his fault? No, he just had some bad luck and it ruined his life. The same thing often happens to athletes who are cut off from their sport in the prime of their careers. To wish that life on anyone, be him a mailman, a football player, or a football playing mailman in space, is wrong.

by papigrande on Aug 23, 2008 5:57 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right on.

I don’t even wish for (or celebrate) injuries to raiders. Of course, wounded pride is still funny.

wounded pride (like phyllis losing at home to the Broncos 23-3) yes. :) 2008 is the year we need to wound Phyllis’ pride!

ya EXCEPT

that mailman doesnt have millions in the bank and a ton of loot in endorsements. Plus these guys have a college degree (most of them anyways). I have to disagree with your analogy. If you feel compassion for him so be it, He will get paid regardless. He will get another contract or he will sue the Chargers for medical malpractice. The Chargers medical staff didnt find the damage

by broncfanstuckinsd on Aug 24, 2008 2:48 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I still disagree.

Because the guy went to college and makes a lot of money, you don’t feel compassion for an injury?

I went to college. I’m a pretty smart guy (I think). Still, getting a masters degree is no walk in the park. I don’t think folks should feel good if I get injured. And I make pretty decent money (though I was set back into debt, despite insurance, when my daughter had medical problems). However, I don’t want folks to be cool with me being injured for that either.

Let’s set aside the class warfare (and rivalries) where injuries are involved. A guys sports team, income, and education should have zero to do with feeling compassion (or not) for someone who gets hurt.

"Greater is an army of sheep led by a lion, than an army of lions led by a sheep" Defoe

by Steve Nichols on Aug 25, 2008 3:27 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

But we need to realistic

Thats not going to happen. While I would tend to agree with you and I do try to go down the road you speak of. It is hard to separate the 100% compassion with an athlete who makes and has made millions over most hard working citizens of America. (Plus I was the guy Papi mentioned but I wasnt a mail carrier just a lowly A/R and A/P guy after the USN and went down that road its tuff getting it back). But I also think in Merrimans case he is afforded better medical care than anyone here and just now its being diagnosed.
Also, I have more compassion for a person who gets hurt in a profession thats main purpose inst controlled demolition. I heard from LT a few years ago, he compared football to controlled car crashes.
Thats just my 2 cents

by broncfanstuckinsd on Aug 25, 2008 4:12 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hear ya.

But consider this too. While we may agree that pro athletes are overpaid, look at what the endure.

Everything from diet to excersize is enforced. You don’t have the free life that many folks have. Your job is painful, and involves (often) serious injuries that set you back for life. I would call that “hard work”. It’s not a game at the pro level. A game is where a few buddies call out there own plays and have a fun time. Pro level football is not “fun”. It is hard, dangerous work and the fun is replaced by directives sent down from the coaches above.

I work in a law enforcement job where I interact with some of the worst people in society on a daily basis. While I have a much better chance of being killed than a pro football player, I have a far less chance of being seriously injured. In my current role, I have to worry about my family’s safety (which may be the worst part). And STILL, I don’t work nearly as hard as a pro football player.

What I’m saying is this. My hope is that I go home safely from work every day. I also hope that everyone else, from the local garbage collecter up to the CEO of the biggest company goes home safe too. It doesn’t matter if it is the Broncos or the raiders, Sheriff’s Dept. or the local factory, star athlete or fast food, soldier or CEO. We all work hard, we all have responsibilites at work, we all have a lot to lose (the more “well off” have even more to lose), and we all want to support our families as best we can.

You’ll get down the road I speak of. It’s just age and patience that will get you there. Don’t look down on those who have less, and don’t despise those who have more. It just comes with time my friend.

didnt mean to rain on your parade

But this morning that is all the locals were talking about. There is real concern here about his status after next season. Some in the media think he is more valuable than McNeil, Phylis, and Chambers. All those guys contracts expire after the 2009 season also. I think only the tip of the iceberg has been hit. The other big thing about this is, the Chargers medical staff never detected the tear. It was Dr. Andrews that did. I see some sort of suit in the future especially if Merriman believes the medical staff cost him money as a free agent. Stay tuned. . . .

Every year a new year.

The injuries in SD, Brady having a mysterious foot injury in NE, Manning out for the Colts. It just goes to show the forces of reality that once again make every year a new year in the NFL.

Every year, any team literally has a chance to go all the way. The previous year really only tells part of the story. Which makes it even more insane how every prediction is based on the previous year. When will people quit listening to these people and demand more informative up to date analysis?

Much like our political elections, our society is way too easily influenced by the media.

by The Gun Young on Aug 22, 2008 1:43 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Well, having Merriman out of the lineup

will definatly help the opposing offense because they won’t have to double-team the guy or something. I was surprised when I read the paper saying that SD might not want him after the ’09 season. Even if they change their mind, they will have to take care of Rivers, who is a FA at the same time.

I personally don’t know why he is doing that show on FSN anyway. I mean doesn’t he want to focus on playing / getting healthy. If he is out for the season I could see why, however it seems the Chager brass isn’t fond of it.

Here is the article I read in the paper.

He can't stay out of the limelight

He loves the media, a whole lotta hot dog in him; I kinda like that but it does drive the fans from other teams nuts. It isn’t that the Chargers don’t want to keep him, but they have too much talent going FA all at once, and Merriman isn’t really the kind to take less to stay with the team. Dielman and Castillo have already signed for less than they likely could have made elsewhere, my guess is they are after Rivers next. If the CBA doesn’t get cleared up we may get to keep him till 2010, or he could get franchised, that would probably be a bargain. If the CBA doesn’t happen and then we franchise him, maybe 2011 (I can dream can’t I?).

I dont think

The will tag him with Mc Neil, Phylis and Chambers with Merriodman all being Free Agents after the 2009 season. The smart bet they would either tag Phylis or McNeil. OLB is easier to replace than a QB or LT. I was listening to how many so called Charger fans dont care if he is gone. ME I think they are ignorant of how valuable he really is. But as being a Bronco fan I hope is gone for the year. Plus Dabolt are you concerned that the Medical staff never figured out his PCL was torn?

by broncfanstuckinsd on Aug 23, 2008 11:34 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

They might sign Rivers and McNeil

That would leave the franchise tag for Merriman. I was surprised at how little fanfare there was when Lynch left, sad to say but people move on pretty quickly. I’m not informed enough on the medical diagnosis, but there seems to be active diagnoses that range from total rebuild to go ahead and start on 9/7. Even now, Turner thinks he might start in the opener against Carolina. I can see where Merriman ought to err on the side of caution, those are very valuable knees to him, the Chargers can go out and rent two more next season.

I do know

If I was SD I would rather he miss the first 6 weeks. The toughest early game they have is at Denver (IMO) it would be in the teams best interests to hold him out if they can until the Pats game

by broncfanstuckinsd on Aug 24, 2008 2:50 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Losing Merriman by himself...

shouldn’t hurt the Chargers. Merriman is a good LB, but one of four in a 3-4. They also have pretty good depth at the position too. He’s also been in decline since the steroids controversy.

I think a problem with Gates, LT, or Chambers would be a bigger deal, and to an extent, Rivers.
