Looking at the bright side of recent drafts
Jay is without a doubt the best QB to join the league in the past 3-4 years. At TE, Scheffler is better than guys taken before him such as Joe Klopfenstein and Marcedes Lewis (IMHO). At wide receiver we have this Brandon Marshall guy... widely considered a top-20 WR, but look who we could've had: Cory Rodgers, Brandon Williams, Chad Jackson... the only guy taken before Marshall that I might be envious of is Greg Jennings. Elvis Dumervil, what a steal. Guys taken before him include Jason Hatcher and Frostee Rucker.
In 2005, our draft may have not been amazing, but we nabbed three corners (R.I.P. D-Will), of which Foxworth and Paymah create depth the rest of the league envies to hell. And though Maurice Clarret was an all-around bad choice, I'd still say we had a pretty good draft.
Over the past few years, I'd say Denver has redeemed themselves after a streak of poor drafts, mainly in the '06 draft. Cutler, Scheffler, Marshall, Dumervil... How many better drafts have there been in recent history for ANY team?

Totally agree
I have been pleased with our drafts of late. When we drafted Cuts I was so excited. All I wanted in that draft was him. B-marsh is a beast, as for Sheft that was a steal. I can’t wait for this year to see Elvis wreak havoc. Besides some flakey pics the Broncos are getting it right. I think Torain and Barrett will be steals this year.

Don't forget
Chris Kuper who brings some depth and Domenik Hixon. God we’re idiots for waiving Hixon last season. He could have helped our return game so much.
Jules: Tell 'em, Vincent.
Vincent: A (Eddie) Royale with cheese.
Jules: A (Eddie) Royale with cheese! You know why they call it that?
Brett: Because of the metric system?
Jules: Check out the big brain on Brett! You're a smart mother******. That's right. The metric system.

The 2007 Giants draftclass is hard to argue with. 100% rookie-starter-rate on a (non expansion-) Super Bowl team…

Dont forget
In all reality teams are made up of players drafted after the 3rd round. Just look at some of Denvers best players ever. Mecklenburgh 12th round, TD 6th round, Rod Smith Undrafted. So I am pleased with the past 3 drafts (So far)

don't forget about CFAs
The story of the last few years is even better if one considers how successful the Broncos have been at acquiring talented but passed over College Free Agents (CFAs). The best examples may be both Selvin Young and Andre Hall, who appear to be our #1 & #2 RBs headed into the season (and I’m not forgetting Torain, who, as a #5rd. / #139, merely provides another example of getting overlooked talent).
The jury’s still out on some of the more recent picks, so it’s hard it’s to conclude too much in some cases, but the Broncos have been successful in terms of production for many of the recent acquisitions. Part of the story relates to the opportunities that newer players found, which itself points to a drop-off in veteran talent, but this alone doesn’t account for Denver’s success in scouting and acquiring talent.
There are some other players who are part of this story, too. I regard Erik Pears as a find because of his contribution as a starter, although we’ll have to wait and see if his contribution is overshadowed by yet another CFA, Tyler Polumbus. However you look at it, we were able to fill one OT position without expending a draft pick.
And there are some names from this year’s CFA crop that bolster what appears to be a productive draft class; Woodyard, Alridge. Another recent acquisition who could become part of the story — although there are many FAs — might be Jordan Beck, but I realize his prospects are still ‘iffy.’
It will be very interesting to see how many of these players are kept on the 53 man squad. Some have already produced enough to warrant keeping them while others, such as many of the LBs, are caught in a numbers game that will make a decision to release them painful, and we may see them catch on elsewhere.
BTW — I, like many, was very unhappy to see Hixon ‘exposed.’ In truth, there were problems with his performance though, and there were needs elsewhere on the team which were created by injuries (as best I can recall) that led to that unfortunate decision. It’s always easy to criticize a decision of this type based on later results but the numbers game leads to some intractable problems. Hixon would never have seen the waiver wire (and we were going to bring him back) if he had performed.

I really look at eh Hixon situation
as something working out best for both parties involved. Sometimes the only way two people (hixon and the Broncos) can get on with their lives and keep growing is to not have anything to do with eachother.
Besides his issues with the everett situation, Hixon also was rubbing shanny the wrongway, some of it for real, some of it exacerbated in Shanny’s mind, no doubt by our continued struggles on STs in 07. While I thiknk parting ways with Hixon was best for everybody, I also think that Shanny made an error in “making an example” out of Hixon. But I couldn’t have done any better. In teh middle of a season, you just have to roll with the punches, and at that point, Shanny and the Broncos were pretty bruised up….

What goes around...
…. comes around in the NFL. Some years ago the Giants cut a lanky, slow receiver. Broncos picked him up. Let’s see if Hixon does anywhere near as good as Ed McCaffrey.

RE: cutting Hixon
I need mnemonic aids to help me remember information nowadays, especially since I haven’t been following the Broncos as closely as I used to (although I understand things much better now), so I’ve struggled to recall all the details regarding Hixon.
My recollection was that Hixon never produced as a receiver (which stats show) and he also had some problems on returns. I seem to recall an announcer saying that the one thing Shanahan had said he wouldn’t tolerate was fumbling. This was shortly before Hixon fumbled and ensconced his place in Shanny’s doghouse. I always liked Hixon, but I became un-enamored around that point, too. Denver was struggling with a growing injury problem about that time and was making frequent moves to address the holes caused by injuries and the lack of production (or so I recall). I think a lot of us remember the ‘positive affect’ we had for Hixon and forget the negatives. A similar situation arose regarding Bell for me — I completely forgot about his fumbling but remembered that I liked him. At that time, Shanahan was forced to repeatedly ‘expose’ players, some of which he probably didn’t want to lose and some of which he was more ambivalent on (Mustard was on and off the waiver wire repeatedly at this time). I guess he was spreading the load out and being fair to the players. Exposing Hixon surprised me and I didn’t like the decision, but the truth was that Hixon was far from the giant we’ve erected in rosy retrospection. Moreover, Hixon did little throughout the rest of the regular season on the Giants. Like many players, Hixon suffered from the dreaded ‘P’ word — "potential.’ Even though many of us were willing to wait for him to develop, there were pressing needs at that time. Putting players on waivers in hope of recalling them is always risky, but Hixon earned his spot on that list despite our rosy recollections.

That Buffalo game...
…did him in. I applaud Shanahan for the move, even though the Broncos lost some potential. There was just too much emotional baggage after that hit and rightfully so. The move turned out to be the best thing for him. He landed with the Giants and managed to resurrect himself.
If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

49ers
Well, actually the Niners picked McCaffrey up first, then we got him in FA in 95. Didn’t think much of it at the time, but he turned out to be one of the best wideouts in team history.

McCaffrey ....
……started with the Niners, but got cut. He landed with the Giants, but got cut by none other than Dan Reeves (who years later admitted he’d made a big mistake). Eddie then came to the Broncos.
