Denver Broncos Release WR Samie Parker, DE Josh Mallard and WR Lorne Sam

The Denver Broncos on Monday released wide receiver Samie Parker and waived defensive tackle Josh Mallard along with wide receiver Lorne Sam, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.

Parker, a fifth-year player, joined the Broncos as an unrestricted free agent on April 15 after spending his first four seasons with Kansas City.

Mallard, who is in his fifth NFL season, played eight games with the Broncos last year after joining the team as a free agent on Nov. 6.

Sam, a rookie, entered the NFL with Denver on April 28 as a college free agent from the University of Texas-El Paso.

The team still needs to make two more moves before tomorrow's deadline to be at 75.

Moderately suprised about Mallard

I know he was underweight for a DT, but he was a madman out there. But the opponents are bound to figure out a 260 pound DT.

With his speed, I think I would figure out how to play LB.

RE: Mallard

I was one who joined the Mallard bandwagon but that was before pre-season and I had cooled considerably on him lately. He did a few things that had me wondering if he’d become the 5th DT but the writing was the wall with the emergence of two other DTs — Peterson & Clemons — who had a substantial size advantage (or course) and along with good speed and athleticism, which seemed to fit the prototype for DT in this year’s scheme.

I won’t say that I have a good feel for who will eventually man the DT position after Thomas & Robertson since I’m not sure about McKinley and Ekuban (who will be used at DT for the 3rd down/ passing down package if kept) but I have a feeling that, one or both, Peterson & Clemons will be on the final roster, although with McKinley that would make 5 DTs which may be pushing it. I’m not exactly happy with the DL’s production so picking up cast-offs seems reasonable.

Just saw this...

The RMN agrees with me:

Mallard joined the Broncos on Nov. 6 and played eight games, with 20 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks.

The emergence of Nic Clemons and Kenny Peterson as the top interior backups made him expendable.

by Colinski on Aug 25, 2008 6:48 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

lol!

Your logic seems to make sense. Though in this case, I think the RMN might have gotten lucky for a change.

Rotty Mountain News

Let’s just say that the RMN was able to conclude from what the coaching staff had decided, which is apparent in the depth chart.

We haven’t posted enough on whose stock is rising or falling, and I’ve thought about creating a fanpost for that although it’s probably too late now.

Here are some of my ‘Bears." — Mallard (or course, we know that now), Colbert. There’s probably more but I can’t think of any right now.

Bulls: Peterson & Clemons. Russell. N. Jackson.

I hesitate to list more, but there are some changes in the depth chart in the recent past that reveal movement. You can probably think of some others I’ve missed. Some of the movements, such as with Paulescu, are simply because one player has elevated and not because of poor performance. Also, as in the case of Nate Jackson, the news isn’t so new. I’d like to see more comments on the surprising movements, like Russell’s or Clemon’s, I don’t recall anyone predicting those.

by Colinski on Aug 26, 2008 12:19 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Also.....

Just thought of another — Barrett. I still hope they keep him on the roster, and his early performances warrant that, but he’s low on the depth chart and that’s not good. I had called R Rogers a darkhorse previously and most people haven’t given him much consideration. An even bigger darkhorse is V Vaughn. Considering he’s been cut already and owes his place on the roster to the fact that they needed to bring the roster back up to 80 (after an injury or something, don’t recall exactly), it’s pretty surprising that he’s ahead of Barrett.

by Colinski on Aug 26, 2008 12:26 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think we keep Barrett and Rogers. I didn't give Rogers any chance,

at least not until recently. I’d like to see some depth chart predictions come out before Saturday in our FanPost section. I posted one a while back that has proven to be woefully wrong so far. lol

Didn't we bring Mallard back a couple of times last year?

It seems that as soon as one of our D-Line got hurt, we would call Mallard back, then waive him again as soon as everybody was healthy again.

Could it be that we’re going to use/abuse him this way again this year?

Parkers is destined for

the Eagles! They taking a 3rd or 4th or 5th receiver and making them a #1 or #2. Samie must have known it was curtains the first week of training camp and Royal was kicking arse and taking names.

CAROLINA -- AS IT TURNS OUT

Panthers sign Parker.

With injuries leaving them thin at wide receiver, the Panthers have signed former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Samie Parker.

a little surprised

by mallard, i kinda liked him, but no biggie. we are too light on d already, give one of the youngins a chance. parker has been cut in my mind as soon as we got colbert and jackson. now, it’s martinez or russell(or both , if we keep an extra te/rb), but i’m guessing russell. he has shown flashes, but we could use another punt returner in martinez if royal sticks. that gives him the edge, i think

by davecheffy on Aug 25, 2008 3:09 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Russell

is a punt and kick returner as well. These two have a little “mini-battle” going on, and they both have had ups and downs. Right now I have Russell rated ahead of Martinez. Its close though.

Not surprised mostly

Mallard just a little bit, but given his size not really. Parker had to outplay several other WRs in camp and didn’t. Sam was pretty much either camp fodder or a special teamer had he made it, but he had a very slim chance anyways.

Sam is so raw

that he would be an easy PS shuffle even having been cut this early. I don’t really have any feelings about him one way or the other, from a technique point of view, but he has some measurables that may just need some time before the coaches settle on a way to exploit him. In this way, I think he is a blessing in disguise: an early cut that allows you to evaluate somebody else a little longer, yet won’t get sniped before he is eligible for the PS.

my opinion

is that Mustard showed a little last year that he has some pretty good hands, as well as the blocker we all know he is. Jackson is almost an extra receiver. I see value in keeping both around, we might have 4 TEs.

I agree...

… that Jackson is like an extra wide out – especially since no one has stepped up at the wide position (after Marshall, Stokely, and Royal). Let’s gp with the big guys!

Sam – His fate was sealed when he gave up the blocked punt against Dallas.

Mallard – A mild surprise, not so much that he was cut but that he was one of the first five. Sad to see the end of The Quack Attack

Parker – not surprise here. We knew he was not going to make the team with Royal’s emergence. I think he was cut today as a sign of respect by Shanahan to give him a greater chance of finding another team. After all, I can’t imagine that either Cliff Russell or Taylor Jacobs have a better shot of making the final roster but I think both will be kept through the final preseason game because Denver needs the bodies at WR.

For the last two I’ll throw out a couple sleepers (since my best guesses are always wrong): Dylan Gandy and Sam Paulescu

by MattR on Aug 25, 2008 5:33 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yea, I don't know what happened to Paulescu but he sure vanished rather abruptly.

I wonder if he found the coach’s doghouse inbetween games….I thought he played better than Kern during the Dallas game, but then he doesn’t play a lick against Green Bay. Strange enough to make me wonder.

rule of thumb

if a guy plays well and then doesn’t play again afterward in the preseason, and if he isn’t a needed “body” on the field, I would expect that the coaches are looking to see extra from the other guy that they are looking at.

Not always true, but a useful generalization, I think…

rule of thumb

Sometimes I think the coaches see something in a player early and keep him out of the games so other teams won’t see the talent and the team that has him can safely get him onto the PS.

I put my thoughts in another thread

Niko paid the price for hesitating. He still has the arizona game to show that he can react quickly and take charge when he is out there.

Watching webster start because he understands the system and “is more familiar with his responsibilities” leaves a sick feeling in my stomach, even though I think, as of now, we have a better chance in week one with him on the field. At what point will Webster actually DOING his job count for anything?

Another reason it is so hard to get a read on anything in the preseason-context.

Not so fast. Niko is familiar with the system already (having played in Seatle’s version). Niko mentioned this in an interview as well. I think he is the better player over time, as i don’t see Webster improving. I’m still pulling for Niko.
