Broncos Release WR Taylor Jacobs; Place DT Carlton Powell On IR
The Denver Broncos on Tuesday released wide receiver Taylor Jacobs and placed defensive tackle Carlton Powell on their reserve/physically unable to perform list, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.
Jacobs, a sixth-year player, saw time in six games for the Broncos last season after the club signed him as a free agent on Nov. 6.
Powell, a rookie, suffered an injury to his right Achilles tendon during the Broncos' offseason conditioning program in July. He was selected by Denver in the fifth round (148th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft from Virginia Tech University.

Wow, 3 WR among the 5 roster moves this week....
I wonder if we keep Glenn Martinez until BMarsh gets back from his suspension…

Glen Martinez will make the team
With Royal starting, I think Martinez will be the primary punt returner, I don’t think Shannan wants to risk injuries to Royal now.

Am I alone...
in not rooting for Martinez? This guy reminds me of James Thrash so much it makes me sick. Nothing against Martinez personally, he’s probably a wonderful person, but he so vanilla.

what about Alridge?
I think he’ll be returning while Glen Martinez is making sandwiches at Subway with Kircus. I can just imagine the phone call “Hey Kirk it’s me Marty. Hey you guys still need some sandwich artists over there?”
Michael Fabiano really knows nothing about football outside of regression analysis and stat extrapolation. If it doesn’t have to do with fantasy football, his opinion is worthless.

they prefer to be called
interior design consultants for bread goods…
couldn’t agree with you more kwool. Alridge should get a shot, although I believe Shanny will go with Royal to start the season. I think Shanny really wants improvement on our specials and believes Royal is the answer. Yes, Royal has earned the starting job at WR, but we draft him b/c we knew he could return kicks this season. If we stick Martinez back there, I don’t see how we improved from last season.

well we know
Kirkus us a better sandwhich maker than a fighter. I mean he can beat up drunks, but when the other person is his equal he folds like a house of cards ask Will Allen. Cuz Kirkus got KTFO!

The latest depth chart has Martinez backing up Brandon. I like Glen I hope he makes it.

I'm with you Mike
I like Martinez.
For one he is one of only like 20 hispanic men in the NFL. Secondly, he has shown quite the work ethic in trying to get his weight up (albeit unsuccessdully). Third, it sounds like he made some plays in camp and preseason, including showing no fear across the middle. Fourth, he had flashed some serious skills on that return TD last season.
I like the idea of him as a second flanker, or even slot in a 4 or (rare) 5 wide set. He is tough, hungry and has some skills to boot.

He's still James Thrash 2.0
If you like that kind of player on the team, then more power to you. I rather look elsewhere. Just my opinion. :)

And what exactly don't you like
about James Thrash? All the playoff games he has been in? His success in the Philly offense? The fact that he is a special teams ace, and situational receiver?
Heck, I doubt Martinez ever comes close to Thrash’s career production, but for depth on the chart, I’ll take him.

you're kidding right?
I’ll spare Thrash on won’t bash him any more. He’s a solid #4 receiver in this league and has somehow managed to carve out a long NFL career. Must be doing something right.
Glenn is the perfect 5th or 6th receiver. If Shanny wants him, then I’ll trust he sees something I don’t.

My point was
that if Martinez ends up as the next Thrash I will be very happy. If Royal or Marshall does, it would be terrible.
I am no James Thrash superfan, but for depth you can’t argue with a guy who has had consistent on field success, even if in small chunks. I think Martinez’s ceiling is a quailty #4 – to expect him to perform as a #1 or #2 is absurd…

Actually
I think martinez is better than trash. I use to have to watch some Philly ans Skin games and he couldnt catch a cold. But for some reason he would stick around, He was slightly better than Freddie Mirchell. Heck I think if Martinez sticks around it could be for a returner. He did take one to the house last year against the overrated Titians

I agree with every positive about Martinez, plus
he also showed a lot of fearlessness and toughness as a punt returner. Too bad he is only a 5th or 6th receiver, but maybe he will get more polish as time goes by.

Taylor Jacobs?
Who was he? I mean, after Marshall, Stokely, and Royal, show me a wide receiver that has done anything this year. I was hoping that the reason for delaying the fifth cut was that Shanahan was trying to work a trade, but that now appears to be wishful thinking on my part. Interesting though that Samie Parker has been signed by the Panthers.

Joe Horn wants to play here
At 36 and with diminishing production you have to say — NO! But I find the idea slightly intriguing nontheless, and he probably would make a reasonably good 5th WR, but………………….
We have what we need at WR already, right here. It’s between Martinez, McDaniel and Russell — whose stock has been rising (but I didn’t like the drop of the certain TD though).

Where did you read that, Colinski?
Joe Horn strikes me as a me+me=more me type player. I bet he can still get it done, but is he worth the possible headache. I like our team chemistry and hesitate to collect another team’s old junk.

He has two teams his agent cited as ones he'd like to play for
When he asked for his release. I didn’t post it cuz I don’t even want people to speculate on the idea. Probably a bad idea.

I know Parker and Colbert bring different things
But it is kinda funny that Carolina gave up on Keary Colbert so Denver signed him, Then Carolina signs the guy who could not keep his job (in part) because of Colbert.

Not much of a surprise considering.
I believe he took Shepherd’s place after his injury.

Joe Horn????
why take an old wide reciever that would be the 6th WR at best. let the younger guys fight for it and play special teams as well.

i think the key question....
we could start speculating on is what players, if any, do we sign after the final round of cuts this weekend? It’s hard to say now because we don’t know what other teams are going to do, but what positions or players do you think the Broncos would sign?
