Jackson v. Scheffler
Nate Jackson is currently the #2 tight end, ahead of Scheffler. Do you think that's going to last through the regular season? Nate, as much as I like the guy, always seems to be a preseason phenom who fades once the season actually starts. He just doesn't have the speed of Scheffler. Nate is probably the smarter and craftier of the two, but not as athletic.
What do you guys think? This could have a big impact on my upcoming fantasy football draft. :-)
Aloha,
HI Guy

Shanny values hard work & reliability more than talent . . .
that is why Jackson starts every year ahead of Scheffler. That may be why Webster is starting ahead of Niko. It is why Denver usually does not allow rookies to ascend to the playing field as quickly as many other teams. The exceptions are when rookies or young talent also work their butt off in camp and OTAs – like Cutler, Royal, Clady.
However, historically Shanny has kind of held back young talent until they prove themselves. Of course, Shanny has always had a more experienced team then this year’s team, so it is harder for a young talent to ascend, even with hard work. Not that Shanny does not value talent to the point of error (Henry, Walker, Clarett). But no matter how much talent, if a guy does not work hard and perform, then they lose their jobs.
By mid-season Scheffler will start ahead of Jackson as usual, because Jackson will get hurt, or will not be performing as well. Scheffler simply has more physical talent.

ANd scheffler
is catching up quickly after missing some time to his own injury. Scheffler is a better prospect than Jackson, Jackson is on the fast track to some great opportunities this year.
Shanny is hoping they are both good and that he can rotate them as needed. Once again Shanahan is the bane of fantasy rosters everywhere…

Scheffler is number two...
no matter what the depth chart says he will be on the field more and he will be the number one receiving TE because Jay Cutler trust him and he does for a reason he’s his best weapon at TE. It’s pretty simple in that respect.

Nates great but!
There is nothing that can replace the Cutler and Schefler chemistry. Shanny knows that and Cutler is lobbying for Scheff. IMO.

I’m glad I choked back the vomit and read on. : )

Scheffler Offseason
Scheffler worked with Jay in the off-season. That should decrease how long it will take to get back in sync.
Victor Frankl:

Sheff
Its just preseason, and Scheff’s foot has been acting up again all camp. Jackson has just been bumped up to see if he can make anything happen. He’s #2 right now, but still fighting for a roster spot. He plays hard, can come up big with some plays but cant block, and red-zone man, all about the red-zone. That’s why I like my Mustard, Jackson is hanging by a fringe. Come regular season, Scheff will be back on the other side.
by Orange Crush on Aug 26, 2008 8:46 PM MDT 0 recs
Actually
Jackson blocked very well in the greenbay game, against DEs and LBs and even a DT once or twice. Scheffler has been getting a TON of blocking reps and frankly, he sucks. He needs every rep he can get, and he needs to get it under his belt, or there will not be a spot on this team despite his “cutler-connection” and his great receiving skills. Putzier was out of here for the same reason, he couldn’t block (and he kept getting dinged up).
Right now our best blocking TEs, in order:
Graham
Pierce
Jackson
Mustard
Scheffler
Pierce is the surprise entry, and his blocking is exceptionally good right now. Mustard is the surprise. He is big and slow and essentially an extra lineman. We already have plenty of big slow lineman. he can catch, and Shanny has always seemed to have a receiving lineman stashed on the roster… I couldn’t make an honest guess as to whether that makes Mustard valuable or not.
Scheffler is geting a ton of preseason reps, almost twice what anyone else is getting. he is progressing faster and faster. But he is mostly getting back up to speed in the passing game. His blocking has always been an issue, and is a long term project. He is even being kept in as a blocking tailback in the shotgun formation. Presumably he could release into a route if a team only rushed three or four guys, but in 7 instances so far he has not run a route yet when kept in to block. I like him, and I think he just needs more time to come back from his injury, in terms of getting back into the swing of things. Shanny has him on as much of a fasttrack as is possible…

All I know
is when Shannon Sharpe can put a sentace together about how good some one ELSE plays tight end that is somethign worth listening too! I think Scheffler is totally legit by the end of the year.

Actually I was really surprised to see Nate ahead of Tony.
Tony seems to be the second best reciever on our team at getting opened in tight spots. Maybe third behind Stokely. I would like to see him start all year.

Hmmm ManyMany and maybe even many years ago I bought one of George Carlin's first Albums.
Back then albums were a large black disc, that twirled around on a turn table, and fed its contents thru a needle—which somehow came out speakers.
Somehow I don’t think the album would have been so popular if George had started it out with,
“Do you mind if we talk about shizznizz?”

Schefler will be starting by the end of the year
I think this is more about Schefler missing parts of the OTA than Jackson being ahead of him, the other thing I noticed was Schefler was having mental mistakes during the preseason, so I am sure that Shannan is sending a message to him to tighten things up or he will sit.

Another thought
If the broncos starting offense is a base two TE running formation, then the two best run blockers would be listed #1 and #2 on the depth chart. That would be Graham and Jackson. Plus in Shanny’s attempts to play mind games i am sure he thinks he is “hiding” Schefler this way.

What a great problem!
To have to decide between Jackson and Scheffler as the receiving tight end is a blessing. With Graham and Mustard/Pierce/Leach (he actually can play the TE spot) we’ve got to be as good as it gets at TE.

Jackson's a baller, but Scheffler could be star
Operative phrase: “could be”
Injuries and lack of blocking skills are the only 2 things keeping Scheff from being a top 3 TE in the NFL.
The good news for him is that his weaknesses aren’t size, speed, ability to shed tacklers, hands, understanding of the offense, or vision.
The bad news is that he can’t really contol the injury thing and that he plays on a team that requires a blocking TE on the field most of the time.
I see him starting by week 3. Remember last year, I think Nate Jackson caught either Cutler’s 1st TD of the year or was the first TE to grab a TD pass in 2007. So he was with the 1st team last year too in the first week (as Scheff was hurt).
Scheffler, when split out, is a HUGE (if I could type in bigger font, I would) mismatch. But, if he doesn’t contribute in the blocking game, the defense will put another corner on him instead of leaving a safety or LB on him (both of which, he’ll own). I expect his biggest strides this year to be in the blocking game.

BTW
Why didn’t Denver flex Scheff out very often last year? I honestly don’t get it, if anyone has a legitemate reason, please let me know.
I’ve been racking my brain over this since last winter….
by super7 on Aug 27, 2008 1:23 PM MDT 0 recs
Do you mean
lining him up at WR? It may have had something to do with his foot. He may not have had a good plant foot on some routes, so he would have been telegraphing his moves. Other than that I would like to hera some likely reasons as well.
So far in preseason the TEs are getting alot of reps (around 10) at various WR slots, and about 5 more from slots that are technically WR, but are in tight on run formations and are usually blocking responsibilities. That % is divided pretty evenly among them, with Scheff, Jackson and Mustard getting the most looks.

10% and 5%. Sorry about the confusion. It is actually like 16-20 reps.

yeah I do, thanks for the stats...
I am at a loss why they haven’t lined him up as a TE on a normal set and motioned him out into the slot. It is something I’ve seen more in the preseason with Scheff and Nate Jax, so I just hope we see it more and more….
