Merriman to Play
Taking a page out of Philip Rivers playbook Shawne Merriman has decided to play with badly injured ligaments. While running the risk of a career ending injury, his love of football and sense of team came first. He texted the Union Tribune sometime this morning "“I'm going to play, I'll deal with it when it's time to get surgery.”. It's a risky move; especially with his contract expiring next year. The safe way to go would be to get the knee reconstruction, ending his current season; then go all out for his final year to secure either a big contract with the Chargers or a huge contract through Free Agency. Hopefully the coaching staff will play safe with him pulling him out when the game is out of reach or while on astro turf and substituting frequently. It is unlikely he will hit the statistics that he reached in prior seasons, but I expect he will still be a presence that opposing teams to need game plan against.

I think that is a mistake on Merriman's part.
He is running a massive risk of blowing his whole knee out. I know he is in a contract year, but he is being foolish taking such a risk with his entire career.

I agree 100%
Look for Carolina and other teams to go after Merriman. I think he is risking further damage and maybe his career

Totally Agree
While I don’t like Merriman, this is a dumb decision. He might not just end his career this year, but hamper his ability to lead a happy and successful life after football if he can barely walk.

I applaud his courage and commitment to the team
But agree with the other posters about the wisdom of the move.

He shouldn't play
He could be a first round HOF player, if he kept up at his former pace. I would much rather him have a full career, it is going to be a real shame if he gets that career ending hit. I don’t know any fans who haven’t agreed with that. You can see where his decision stems from though, if he weren’t reckless he wouldn’t be the player he is.

I dont think
He is looking at the big picture. I also think he finally found a Dr. that said what he wanted to hear. From all the reports I have read and heard all the doc’s said get surgery. I know he wants to play, but at what cost. In 09 he could get a HUGE payday, but if he screws up is twig he may never play again

Exactly
It’s disappointing that management doesn’t tell him he can’t play.

I am sure that is exactly what coach's will do.
No one wants to see him hurt, but he will now be considered a liability on the Charger defense and teams may scheme their plays in his direction.

Plus it will be almost impossible
For him not to be at least a little bit tentative and hesitant with the lingering thought “This could be the last play of my career” in the back of his head at all times.
I mean I know that that is the reality for all players in the game at all times, but for him it should now be way more on the forefront. And you better believe that the first lack luster game he has Charger fans will be calling him tentative.

Sounds to me like...
Merriman has worn (or is going through the process of wearing) out his welcome in SD. Either way, it would have to be a HUGE miracle for him to eclipse even 70% of his numbers from last year, in fact, I would propose that a 60% to 70% Merriman is not nearly as good for SD as a 100% Tucker or Harris.
This is huge for the AFC West. I’d rather have an injured Merriman than a healthy Tucker or Harris on the field anytime, anyplace.
I have to think Shanny would shut him down if Merriman was a Bronco.

Apparently Roids wreck your power to use reason
I can’t believe he would be this stupid, this is nothing like the Phylis Rivers thing, that was one game and a chance to go to the Super Bowl, he wants to risk his career over 16 games, and it’s not like people aren’t going to be targeting his legs and knees, he basically is telling everyone, come wreck my career. That isn’t guts, that is stupidity at it’s best. I am guessing after week two his season and career will be over.

Merriman
The only thing I am thinking is that Merriman doesn’t want to miss the season because this could be the year for the Chargers to take it all. But still, I can’t believe this. I would shut it down immediately. This is crazy.

That's a big if
Problem is even if he does play, there is a very high likelihood that he will be seriously injured on that knee or somewhere else trying to protect the knee, and he will miss the season regardless and may have his career cut short, he is crazy not to shut it down and get healed up.

He needs to have surgery and sit
because with an unstable knee like his one hit and his career will be over. I think this could be stemming from what he saw Rivers do in the AFCCG and what people were saying about LT that leads him to this. Maybe he wants to remain in the spotlight. For whatever his reason is…….it’s totally stupid and the risk outweighs the reward
The Chargers have allready signed his backup to about $6 million guaranteed money so you know his days are numbered. He should get surgery to repair the knee and come out next year and show what he’s got because nobody will want him if his knee gets worse.
by weazel on Aug 27, 2008 4:24 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Why aren't the Chargers telling him to sit and take the surgery
I am amazed that the San Diego Chargers wouldn’t be telling him he is going on the IR and see him next year, to allow your best player on defense and someone who has had as big of an impact on that organization as LT, to risk or basically throw his career away for the chance that he may be able to go to the Super Bowl is crazy. The only thing I can think is that the Doctors have told him his knee is basically shot and that he looks at it as he won’t be playing next year either way, so why not risk it.

because
the SD medical staff did not notice a tear in any ligament. If they admit to it, then that could opne them up to a medical malpractice claim by Merriman

Their medical staff and the lame HC thinks he is fine

Looks like they are going to try
and get everything out of him then let him go after ’09.

Thats what it looks like to me
It’s a shame when an entire organization has no respect for you and will just get what they can out of you and dump you on the side of the road, hell the Army doesn’t even do that! They mess you up, they fix you up!

That's pretty sad.
I mean even if he plays the whole season and his knee doesn’t get any better he will have to have surgery sometime. If SD doesn’t want to keep him when his contract is up you would think they would want him healthy so that they could get something for him.

S-T-U-P-I-D
I hate the thought of any player, even a raider, getting hurt. I personaly can’t stand Merriman, but he’s a human being. He’s also young and foolish, and his team’s leadership (owner and coach) are idiots for not forcing him to sit with an IR.
As for running plays at him, I’m afraid that’s well within good ethics. If the team (and worse, the individual) presents a weakness to an opposing team, it’s an invitation. No illegal hits or cheap shots, but just simple scheming. An OL or a run blocking RB needs to be put on Merriman every play. This is called a “jack”, as in “(insert play name)…(player’s jersey number) jack (player’s jersey number)”. After this, every call only needs to name the changed jersey number of the player doing the jacking.
Someone in the SD organization needs to pull his head out and protect this kid from himself. If Merriman gets hurt, I’ll be blaming the coaching staff and the ownership.

I wonder
How much Carolina will do this. They run the same ZB scheme as the Broncos. I dont want him to play for 2 reasons, one I think he is taking a huge risk of future earnings and 2nd I am a bronco fan and the Chargers are not as good without him as they are with him.
Plus I wonder if his knee problems are from the Tenn/Sd game from last Nov/Dec when he was hit in the knee a couple of times then after the game intimated that Jeff Fisher ordered his OLmen to attack his knees. (Fisher denied this after a few days Merriman backtracked)
