Surprise! Broncos Trade Montrae Holland To Dallas
The Denver Broncos on Thursday traded guard Montrae Holland to Dallas in exchange for a fifth-round choice in the 2010 NFL Draft, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.
Holland, a sixth-year player, joined the Broncos as an unrestricted free agent on March 5, 2007, after spending his first four NFL seasons (2003-06) with New Orleans
The door to the Shanahan Dog House is a small one and like I said last night during MHR Radio, I wouldn't be surprised if Holland were to be cut. Well, he wasn't cut, but the Broncos surely sent a message by trading him away.
A 5th Rounder? Is that enough for you??
Oh, and, I do have to mention that I said during last night's MHR Radio that Holland would be the surprise cut of this Training Camp. Shanahan is nothing f not consistent, and this is another example. He'll pay you for your production, but you better keep up the hard work or you'll be gone.
Moving forward, this move has to be considered an indictment on how impressive Ryan Harris has been this Training Camp. After a rough start, Harris surely has been solid. It also proves Chris Kuper is ready for prime time, despite playing all of pre-season with a cast on his hand. Kudos to Kuper as well!
I look for the Broncos to take a serious look at guys like Kory Lichtensteiger and Mitch Erickson tomorrow night, and don't be surprised if they comb the cut lists this weekend.

Fifth seems a little low to me.
I would rather we had traded for a LB or DT. But it is better than just a straight cut.

I voted that I would have prefered to keep him for depth.
But I would have rather traded for a low fourth rounder, or at least a project at DT or LB.
5th isn’t too bad, but I expect it will be a mid to low pick, because DAL isn’t a bad team.

If a 5th rounder is the best we could do....then I'll take it.
We could use it to move up into the 4th or 3rd or something.. Shanny is a mover and shaker baby!

Yep
Would have been nice to get more, but I don’t think you could realistically expect to get a much better offer for Holland. I am sad to see Holland go, he was probably the most solid of the Denver linemen last year. But there was a logjam in the middle of the line and someone was gonna be left out. Better to get something for Holland, who very possibly would not have started even if he came into camp in shape.
PS. I wonder if this is good news about the success of Nalen’s surgery.

I won't lie . . .
I wasn’t surprised. I was shocked!
Holland was the Broncos’ one solid, consistent O-lineman last year. His glorified release is a statement on the escalation of talent on the line this year, especially Kuper’s, IMO.
But the Broncos still need depth. With that in mind, could there have been more to it than meets the eye? Could there have been another attitude problem in the locker room? Shanny has demostrated dramatically that attitude and locker room chemistry is probably the number one factor in a player’s hitting the road.

That’s what I was thinking, that Shanahan has a lot of confidence in Kuper and the line as a whole. The good thing is, this leaves room to keep Lichtensteiger and/or Polumbo.

I think this move illustrates how dramatically our depth has improved this year. We have a lot of young guys who can play and who are only going to get better. Once we get a young player, hopefully Lichtensteiger, installed at center this line is going to be really good for years to come.

It's better than nothing.
I figured he was on a short leash when he showed up overweight. It’s good we got SOMEthing for him as opposed to just cutting him. 5th rounder??? Maybe we could have gotten more but I’m sure Shanny wanted this more than Jerry. I think Jerry definitely had the leverage. I wonder why it’s a 2010 pick and not 2009. Of course we would want more from the trade. I want more money and sex but, well, you know.

re: 2010
Good catch, I did not notice that. I think teams discount future picks so Dallas’s 5th rounder in 2010 is probably similar in value to their 6th rounder in 2009. And with Adam Jones being reinstated today, Dallas no longer has a 6th round pick in 2009. So I am gonna guess that Denver was shopping Holland looking for a 6th and Dallas made this counter offer since they did not have a 6th in 2009 to give.

I liked Holland but maybe it is more the player doesn’t fit the scheme, I was looking for them to move Hamilton over to Center move Kuper to LG and bring Holland back in at RG. But better we get something for him if he was going to be cut and it would have been unlikely to get anything higher than a 5th rounder for him, not like OG are high priority in the league, although undervalued. Best of luck to him.

wow!
I wonder what the Broncos charged for shipping and handling fees for Holland? Must of cost a fortune.
Seriously, though, if this isn’t a sign that Shanny is setting the tone for the season, ala (DON"T THROW ROCKS AT ME) Bill Bellicheat, then I don’t what is. I love that Shanny’s pruning the character of this team, which—to use a gardening analogy—should yield more growth and health out of the remaining players.

Better a 5th than a nothing!
Heck if we were going to cut him anyways I’m glad we got a 5th rounder for him (though I’d rather have a 2009 pick than 2010, but hey, I’ll take it). Lesson to everyone else? No, you can’t haz cheezburgr.
Amazing how many of the younger guys have stepped up, notably Kuper and Harris. It always takes a few years to develop OL in our system (Clady is the exception) so this is good news indeed!

analyzing the decision
Perhaps a good way of looking at this is as a way of keeping Lichtensteiger, since our projections of the OL had 9 players and even up to 10, which is far from ideal.
We had 4 OGs that merited keeping — Holland, Hamilton, Kuper & Lichtensteiger — but it’s silly to keep more than one backup. I’m also ignoring the possibility of keeping Gandy, partly because he graded poorly in our breakdown here. Reports on his performance in the GB game were far more favorable however, so I think we may actually have had 5 OGs capable of playing in the NFL The problem is that we could only keep 3 or 4, and that was stretching it.
An added problem is that our most pressing need is probably finding adequate depth at OT. Maybe Pears is the answer, maybe Polumbus is — but that points back to the experience problem. I don’t know the answer but I think we need to consider OT first if we’re going to keep more OLs, and the problem of covering the OT position OLs is only exacerbated if we keep more OLs that aren’t able to play OT.
Rather than framing the problem as a choice between OGs, we should look at it as a choice between two scenarios — #1 – Hamilton & Holland as starters, with Kuper as backup. And Lichtensteiger (or someone else) gets poached off the PS; #2 – Hamilton & Kuper as starters, and Lichtensteiger as backup + we get a 5th rd. draft pick.
The bottom line is we get both a #5th round pick and get to keep a good OL, Lichtensteiger. The question is: do we think that Holland is so much better than Kuper that he’s worth forgoing a fifth round pick and Lichtensteiger? You can view it this way if it helps — would you trade Lich. + a 5th pick to make the ‘improvement’ of acquiring Holland in order to supplant Kuper as the starter?
There are other considerations, too — Holland’s age, suitability for zone blocking, salary, ability to grow into a scheme with the other OLs, the experience foregone by not letting Kuper and others gain experience, and so on, but I not really trying to knock Holland. I just want want to frame the decision properly and formalize it. We can’t consider possibilities that don’t exist (like keeping too many OGs) if they weren’t realizable.
BTW — I was looking at the depth in the DL, particularly at DT, in the 2009 & 2010 drafts. DROOL, DROOL, DROOL.

motivation
he must have lost his drive or something, this leaves us a little thin at guard. everyone is predicting gandy to get cut, and hamilton is a concussion away from retirement, don’t forget. it looks like they’re going to keep litch, and play him at guard. i guess wiegmann can play guard, too, so maybe we’re ok there. but if the guy was slacking, anyway, and not able to overtake kuper, then getting something for him was a great idea. moving on…

Holland had motivation and weight issues his whole career
including college. I remember when he came to Denver, a lot of the good scouting minds were very surprised, because they felt like his were not the kinds of issues that would fit in with the personality of the Broncos’ oline.
Not many people may see it like this, but I think the Broncos made a solid and wise move, before the decision to bring in Holland could bite them in the ass. he showed great stuff last year, but he started off “The Quest” by showing that he wasn’t over his past issues. The Broncos cut loose well ahead of schedule and got something VERY valuable in return. That extra fifth is worth a LOT.

2 — The Broncos when they learned how overweight Montrae was and then saw him a week later selling burgers for Wendy’s
Either way, Denver feels REAL good about the O-Line AND their depth, otherwise there’s NO WAY they do this right now. Great move.

Did Holland play against Dallas?
I can’t recall. Anyway, it seems he spent the summer working on weights and not conditioning, so he might be a better fit for Dallas at this point.
I’m thinking this was a move Shanahan made because he sees good things in the rest of the O line, not because he was sore at Holland.

Good move
I think this is a good move. I mean, as we’ve been discussing in the other roster threads, we were in a quandary with OL. Had we kept Holland, we would have had to put Polumbus and/or Lichtensteiger on waivers to put them on the PS. If the choice was losing Polumbus thru waivers but keeping Holland or keeping Polumbus and getting a 5th rounder, that sounds like a better option to me.

I don’t like the move – I though Holland was a very good player and was a nice surprise FA pick up last year. He did, contrary to popular belief, do well in the ZBS. But with the team’s attitude makeover and the seeming zero-tolerance policy now I guess I should’ve seen it coming.
Holland is a better player than Kuper at this point. I like both, but I was hoping that they’d end up holding down the guard positions for a while. This whole skedaddle also helps solve another problem, namely what to do with Ten Tigers. He obviously won’t be ready for major gametime yet but we were dangerously close to running out of roster room for him. So I think this factored into the move.

It must be he was going to be cut. Travis Henry anyone? I suspect he was whining about how denver likes “smaller” O-lines and Shanahan didn’t like him showing up overweight. It shows a lack of discipline, something Denver is holding higher this year. Dallas will probably WANT him to eat at wendy’s every meal. As far as trading “one of our best players” I disagree. He was an adequate starter, but was probably going to be cut because of his weight issues.

From the Cowboys Blog:
According to the Dallas Morning News Cowboys blog they gave up a 5th round pick in 2010 for someone named Montrae Holland from Denver. Don’t know anything about him, but it can’t bode too well for Kosiers injury or the coaches comfort level with his replacements. So much for all of the early reports of Berger pushing Kosier, eh? I wonder if we might be seeing a similar deal for a WR. they must really like him to give a 5th round pick this late in the pre-season.

Good value for Denver, good fit for Dallas
Getting a 5th rounder for a UFA that had minimal market value at New Orleans was a good deal for Denver. Plus, Holland’s size will make him a good fit (no pun intended)on the Dallas O-Line.
Holland did a good job for Denver last year, and I wish him well.
