I believe Holland was traded because...
we needed the roster spots....
I dont think we wanted to subject K-Lich and Polumbos to the waiver wire for another team to pick up so I beleive that they both played well enough for the broncos to want to keep them around.
Also I dont believe Holland was going to beat out Kuper and why break up to cohesion anyways. So what would be the point of keeping someone whom is getting paid starters money as a 2nd teamer with no real chance of breakin the starting line.
Besides he was and has been in the dog house from day one...even though i would have loved to keep him around, I still believe in Shannhan and know hes just tryin to put together a good team.
K-Lich was the best center in the draft and Polumbus was contacted by many teams including Tony Dungy so I beleive the talent is there.

K-Lich yes
I really don’t see how they are not going to be able to keep Polumbus on practice squad and subject him to the waiver wire. Right now I have them keeping the following:
LT – Clady
LG – Hamilton
C- Nalen
RG – Kuper
RT – Harris
C- Weigman
C/OG – K-Lich
OT – Pears
OG/C – PJ Alexander
With them signing Erickson and Polumbus to the practice squad
Even than may be stretching it since a lot of times the Broncos only run with 8 o lineman.

Confused
I’m confused by your take, for Polumbus to be on the PS, he has to first clear waivers, right?
Also, I think it seems likely a this point that Nalen will not be part of the opening day 53 one way or another.

Polumbus will stay on the Broncos roster.
crossing our fingers and hoping he passes right through waivers is a terrible idea.

I just don't see them keeping two tackles on the active roster
They are going to have to waive Polumbus and hope he clears waivers,I don’t know any other teams that would put him on their active 53 man roster right now, so I think he will pass waivers and then Denver can put him on the practice squad.

I meant two back-up tackles since Pears can play R or L tackle if needed

OL numbers
We’ve gone around on this and people can disagree— of course. The problem was we had 2 backup OGs and a backup OC, who also was very hard to release given Nalen’s condition. That left Lichtensteiger’s position in doubt, but he was initially considered a perfect replacement for Nalen by the Broncos staff and there doesn’t appear to have been a change in their thinking.
What’s debatable at this point is whether they will keep 2 reserve OTs. Past rosters show that they don’t like to keep more than 8 OLs if possible, so cutting 1 OT falls in line with their target number for the OL. The real question is which OT they’ll keep. Pears has a very important advantage — experience — and it’s a bigger advantage than normal because we’re starting 2 rookies at OT. But he’s also had heath problems lately. Polumbus has great value, more than is apparent on the surface, because he projects as an adequate backup at LT, which is far more important than any other OL position.
I don’t see a good solution regarding the OL numbers so I have to leave it up in the air. They can keep 9 OLs and it wouldn’t be too rash. They could also cut one OT and nobody would bat an eye. My hunch is that they would really like to keep Polumbus over Pears, but it’s a risky move given the level of experience.
As far as Holland’s trade goes — the best way to think of it is as if we were given Lichtensteiger and a 5th rd. pick for Holland. I don’t think Holland is that much better than Kuper to warrant giving up Lichtensteiger and a 5th rounder.

I would have to disagree
In the past five years we have kept 4 OT and 5 middle Offensive Lineman. I think we keep all four tackles, and Erickson gets through the waivers to our practice squad!

As far as Holland goes
I really don’t know if he was in Shannan’s “doghouse”, granted he showed up overweight, but he obviously worked it off and was playing well from what I had seen and heard, I think it may have been something of the player didn’t fit the system as well and they probably felt if they could get a draft pick for him, especially if he wasn’t going to start then go for it. I had always contended though that I really doubt Nalen will be coming back and I would have liked to see them move Hamilton over to Center and bring in Holland as a guard.

I'm thinking it was a team cohesion thing
After Holland showed up overweight and didn’t practice for the first three weeks, Kuper stepped in and the line was forming into a team. Once Holland lost the weight he was not only having to fight Kuper for the position but fight the cohesion that the line had formed.
In the ZB scheme each player has to know what the other is doing (at least the players on either side of them) and sticking in someone who hadn’t been there for three weeks was just going to be too much of a disruption to what had already taken place.

As a coach...........
I think Holland may have been in the doghouse more than some think for the overweight thing. I my humble opinion, a player that doesn’t take it serious enough to keep himself in shape or even at a decent weight isn’t committed enough. I know on my school team, we frown on the players that don’t work hard and don’t take it serious enough and even though some of them might be a bit more talented than the guys behind them, their habits cost them playing time, even starting positions. Holland is paid to be ready for the start of Camp, he was not and that is a huge nono for me, if he isn’t any more committed than that then good riddance as far as I’m concerned. To win at the NFL level, it takes commitment and team play, and I think Shanny is sending that message here. We’ve tried the talented thugs thing, (Dale Carter, Darrell Gardener anyone?) and it didn’t work. So I applaude Shanny for this move. Holland may have been the most talented guard we had, but his commitment is obviously lacking.

So Phillips' opinion doesn't matter?
Jerry Jones says that Holland will be one of the 53 and is asked about whether he’ll start the first game. Wade doesn’t get any say?

does that surprise you?
Honestly I does not too me. This is the same guy who wins 2 Bowls and then gets rid of Jimmie. This is also why Dallas has not won a playoff game since the 1996 season, Jerry has to have too much input. This is why I love Bowlen. He lets the football people do what they know best, football

I actually think it's a good pick-up by Dallas
Dallas gets a good guard who basically is built for their system, I am sure they got to see Halland match up against their 1st stringers for the days they were here and I am guessing he is better than what they had.

This is a good take on the matter
Holland is too good and too expensive (1.9mil for the year if they kept him) to be sitting on the bench, but with Harris settling in at RT, there is no danger of Kuper being needed on the outside, so he can just stay put. They traded Holland now while a rare opportunity existed. Dallas isn’t buying something sight unseen here. They have a starter out, questionable backups, and a good scouting report (from playing us in practice and preseason) on a player that is starter quality. That doesn’t happen everyday and I am glad all sides recognized the benefits and took advantage of it. And the 5th is very valuable and favors the Broncos.
Question for MattR (glad you are back and in fine form!):
Can Denver, and what are the chances that they might, recoup the 1mil signing bonus? If they can, I would say watch the bonus money. If they try to get it back, that is an indication of doghouse trade. If not, it means they were happy with what Holland gave while he could, but disappointed enough in his current situation to be willing to part ways.
Bottom line is that Holland didn’t help himself by showing up out of shape, but his stock was very bullish throughout the preseason, and denver cashed in on a good combination of circumstances with Dallas. I honestly believe that Dallas is the only team who had enough information to give us as good of a deal as we got. Everybody, including Dallas and Holland got lucky here.

I would have to agree with the points styg makes!
We have youth and agility on the line now and while Holland preformed well his stay was only ever going to be short here. I think Dallas got a good player over all, regardless of what I may have said this week, Holland has always been on my “Make the Team” list because he produces. Glad we got a good trade. I don’t think Holland would have ben happy riding the bench and now he has his chance to prove his starter quality to other teams.

You know what this tells me?
Two things:
- Tom Nalen is going to recover
- Kory Lichtenteiger’s development is starting to come along.
If Nalen comes back, Weigmann has definately earned a spot on this team. He came over here to start, he has a great games started streak, and he has proved that he still has some gas left in the tank. He can play guard, and he is the type of guy who will change positions for the good of the team. So, that makes Holland’s fat arse obsolete.
I initially thought Practice Squad for Lichtensteiger, but now it seems to have come down to whether Shanny likes him or Dylan Gandy better. I’m going to go with K-lic on that one. He’s a beast and our future at center, and if Shanahan keeps him, then I think we are in good hands for years to come. After all, Shanny has had about as much success drafting linemen in the late rounds as he has running backs, it just doesn’t get as much publicity.
So, I have two scenarios: Nalen coming back and starting center with Weigmann at guard, and Kuper and K-lic backing him up; or Nalen retiring and Weigmann at center, Kuper at guard, and K-lic backing him up.

Part of my first sentence of that first paragraoh got cut out.
But I forgot what it said, I just know that there was supposed to be something after the Nalen sentence that wasn’t another sentence about Casey Weigmann.
I think I just made it more confusing.
Either way, my post was wordy enough that I don’t need to add anything to it. So, do you all think this is a good sign for Nalen, does it mean K-lic has solidified himself, or was Hollland just in the doghouse?
