The New Roster
I thought that I'd open a thread fo rthose of us who are gluttons :)
Current Roster QB – Cutler, Ramsey
RB – S Young, Pittman, Hillis, A Hall, Torain, Alridge (IR)
WR – Marshall, Stokely, Colbert, Royal, D Jackson, Shepherd(IR)
TE – Scheffler, Graham, N Jackson,
OL – R Harris, Clady, Kuper, Hamilton, Nalen, Wiegmann, Lichtensteiger Polumbus, Pears
DE – J Moss, Engelberger, Ekuban, Dumervil, Crowder
DT – D Robertson, Thomas, McKinley, K Peterson, Clemons, C Powell (PUP)
LB – DJ, Boss, Niko, Winborn, Larsen, Webster, Woodyard, L Green
CB – Champ, Bly, Foxworth, Paymah, J Williams
S – Manuel, McCree, Abdullah, R Rogers
ST – Leach, Prater, Kern
I never thought that we'd solve the problem of too much depth at LB by keeping nearly everyone. 8 LB's seems to be a new things - anyone? Also, 9 OL is great - we have a lot of depth there now, in case Nails goes down.
To be honest, my only real surprise/disappointment was not keeping Barrett and losing Alridge to injury. Next year, little buddy. Here's to a great year!

In what way?
I think that while EE was serviceable he wasn’t really a game changer. I think that keeping Woodyard was a much better move.

I love the Woodyard keep--special teams now--starting 'next Tom Jackson' later.

Spare part status is realistic. If Denver doesn't pick him up again, then some other team
probably will. At some point, he has to translate his speed and toughness to production. I still have hopes for him to become a NFL WR.

What value will Ekuban provide in the next 2 or 3 years?
I still believe that the Run-D needs to be built up for a deep playoff run in the next 2-3 years. I will be surprised if Ekuban, Peterson and Mckinley will be making contributions then. The D-Line needs fresh legs.

Dre Moore?
How about Dre? He got waived by TB. I thought he looked good coming into the draft, but he showed up overweight to Buc’s camp and got on Gruden’s bad side. Easy steal of a fourth round pick, but don’t know if he fits Broncs scheme.

Agreed!
But, we have to get through this year to get to next year, so we go with what we’ve got. Dre Moore must really be lazy/unmotivated to have not made a squad after the way he sometimes showed up in college! Any other GOOD role playing DTs out there?

DTs
We’re obviously a little old on the DL — EE & McKinley, etc. — but we’re mostly looking at likewise aged replacements or “never has-beens” so I prefer to look ahead (and I haven’t forgotten about Powell).
I think we’re 2 good drafts away from having a very good team. We still need some superstars in the mix on defense. Here’s a couple sites on the next two crops. And I can imagine a beautiful draft that goes: #1-LB, #2-S, #3-DT, #4-DT, etc.
by Colinski on Aug 30, 2008 6:54 PM MDT 0 recs
8 of of our DL are young.
so I think we are building for the future. And the nice thing about young players is that you never know who might raise their game, and exceed other’s expectations.

Dre Moore
What? Dre Moore got cut? Him and Barrett are 2 suprise rookie cuts. I can’t believe it. Spencer Larsen survived the final cut, and Barrett didn’t. If you would have told me that right after the draft, I would have been shocked. We better get Barrett on the practice squad quick.

different trajectories
Both were intriguing talents for different reasons and both had rapid changes in status.
Barrett clearly excelled early on but took a nosedive over the last 3 games. I think he, most of all, needs time to develop. And he pretty much said so himself in a snippet of an interview. Sounds like he really needs more time to gain his bearings, it’s clearly not about physical ability but mental progress.
Larsen’s early progress was stalled with his two trips back to Arizona but he came on strong at the end of pre-season, rather than tailing off like Barrett.
I’m not going to go out on a limb on Larsen yet because the last cut is still coming, but I was impressed watching him play last night while I concluded Barrett was a cut. I could be accused (unfairly) of being fickle but my only loyalty is to performance. Larsen performed last night, Barrett didn’t. Larsen just looks a lot more NFL-ready.

next year's crop
What’s remarkable about next year’s draft crop is the number of spectacular athletes playing Safety — Taylor Mays – USC, William Moore – Missouri, Kam Chancellor – VT, etc. Whatever happens with Barrett — and I certainly wish him well — there is a reasonably good chance that we’ll be picking a big, fast Safety anyways.
I don’t think the coaching staff made a mistake, I think he needs to develop his skills before he’s able to play his position proficiently. Let’s just hope he makes it on to the PS. My guess is he needs to work on his play recognition skills. My understanding (taken in part from HT’s posts) is that Safety is a position that requires ‘mental processing’ more than physical talent. Barrett needs more time to learn the position. He commented on this recently, saying something to the effect of being disoriented, or something like that.

You're right Ski.
Safety is the “smartest” position on defense (MLB is a close second).

different kinds of intelligence
Not to disagree — by any means — but there really is (IMO) game smarts and book smarts. Players like Myron Rolle (FSU Safety, and possible Rhodes scholar) have both. It’s not a knock on Barrett’s intelligence, which is high considering he already a grad student, but a comment on his ability in a ‘game smart’ sense.
John Lynch is another good example of having both kinds of smarts.

I'm refering to "game smarts".
IQ is certainly a factor in how much and far far one can go with “football smarts”, but hard work, study, and experience can overcomemuch of the gap.
If we get very technical, I think there is “IQ” (having to do with the ability to learn and calculate), and “knowledge” (the data that one has). In my opinion, the most crucial position (on the defense) for “football knowledge” is the safeties (the FS in particular).
I don’t think we are in disagreement at all, if I’m reading you right.

Football Knowlege correlates with experience.
I agree with Ski and HT. Barrett has the intelligence. He just needs more experience to get his NFL football knowledge to the level needed for the Broncos.
I mentioned in another blog about safeties that Denver prefers experience, or game knowledge, over youth and talent. Cause I agree with HT that the safety position requires more mental than any other defensive position. This is the reason oldies like Lynch and Harrison held on so long- play recognition and tackling ability.

I read somewhere
that Barrett has stiff hips. He’s great straight ahead but doesn’t have good change of direction skill.

I know it's not sexy to talk about
but THE biggest reason I’m excited about this season is that our SPECIAL TEAM will be DRAMATICALLY IMPROVED. Kern, Prater, young guns blazing down hill on specials. Call me a football nerd, but solid specials makes the difference between good and playoff contender.

Curome Cox cut. I wonder how much patience Detroit will have with George Foster and Tatum Bell?
by Arctic Bronco on Aug 30, 2008 7:46 PM MDT 0 recs
We will take a look at these 2 Eagles!!!
I think Denver might take a look at Jerome McDougle DE who had a GREAT pre season after being on IR last year. He almost made Philly’s squad. He was a first round pick in 03, has had horrid luck, but he is the type of player Shanny likes. He has speed and power and would be a good acquisition to our pass rush.
I think, now that AA is done for the year, that we make a inquiry on Ryan Moats. A very solid RB but ELECTRIFYING returner…think Darren Sproles mold.
