Ryan Torain Injured
This report comes from CBS4 Broncos Insider Reggie Rivers.
UPDATE: Mike Shanahan has announced that Torain will be out 6 to 8 weeks with a broken bone in his elbow.
Broncos rookie running back Ryan Torain was carted off the field during the team's 9-on-7 run-blocking period at practice Wednesday morning.
He was knocked off balance while carrying the ball and put his left hand on the ground to regain his balance.
He immediately collapsed on the turf grasping his left shoulder. Broncos head trainer Steve Antonopolus helped Torain walk to the sideline and tended to him for about 10 minutes before calling a cart to ferry the tailback off the field.
Torain, a 5th-round draft pick out of Arizona State, has been one of the stars of training camp. This injury likely means that he will miss the preseason opener in Houston on Saturday.
This is unfortunate for Ryan Torain, he had a lot of promise and from what I have heard he was doing great in camp. As I said in a comment below, this does now open the door for Anthony Alridge to show what he is made of.

hey captain bringdown and the buzzkillers-
I think we’re OK compared to last year. I’m blocking your negativity out of my head.
Michael Fabiano really knows nothing about football outside of regression analysis and stat extrapolation. If it doesn’t have to do with fantasy football, his opinion is worthless.

Always do
Until this offensive line gels, the backs are going to be taking bigger hits than they can handle.

This may open the door for Anthony Alridge though...
...but yeah…please please no more injuries!

Not enough here to panic.
We don’t yet know what the injury is, and we haven’t heard a statement yet. The guy fell, the head trainer took a look at it, he was able to walk off the field, and he got a cart ride. It may just be a precaution, and I wouldn’t worry until we hear more.
Thanks to Sirsam for getting the story out!

He hurt his arm
Of course he could walk off the field, he hurt his arm, not his leg…
by muellator on Aug 6, 2008 11:16 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
If the arm injury were severe enough,
he might not have managed it. I’ve seen arm injuries (as a coach and as a medic) that were excruciating enough that the person wasn’t able to walk.

I guess FM 104.3 The Fan...
...is reporting that Torain suffered a hyperextended elbow. Supposedly the report was confirmed by Broncos training staff. How bad would that be?

A hyperextended elbow can vary.
There are two ways for an elbow to move. Closing (called “tension”) and open (called “extension”). Hyperextension means it bent back (opened) too far.
If the injury didn’t result in a break, or severe tendon or ligament injuries, it may be painful but quickly recoverable. In a very severe case there could be permanent damage. What I’m saying is that it could range from a few days of pain to something much worse. As with a lot of injuries, we should probably wait to hear what the team ends up releasing.

ouch
I had this very injury myself where my elbow opened too far and it resulted in a fracture. Took about an 6 month period before I regained much strength and I still don’t have full range of motion. Not saying this is the case for Torain or making any predictions but even a simple hyperextension would be painful.

Torain injury
The Denver Post just reported that the injury is to Torain’s left elbow. He appeared dazed after the injury, and was taken to a shady area, and wet towels were put on his head. After ten minutes, he appeared recovered, and gave a fist pump to the RB coach before getting on the cart. Maybe he just got his bell rung.

A hyperextended elbow...
..can be excruciatingly painful, regardless of whether the injury itself is mild or severe. The shaded area and the towels may have been comfort measures, or might have been because the staff suspected that a heat injury was the real culprit (he might have had an elbow injury, but he might also have had heat exhaustion that was excaserbated by the injury).

My dark horse...
is Anthony Alridge.

Alridge was also my darkhorse..
With Brandon missing the first two games I already penciled in Alridge for kickoff returns, to ease the burden on Royal, who will now see increased receiving reps.

You are doing
a good job of exiting lalaland. It wouldn’t surprise me if Hall/Alridge were back for kick returns.

styg Don't do that! I have a few more weeks!
I love la-la-land…aaauuuhhhgg I don’t want leave. Alridge will be great on kickoffs and spelling Selvin after dual 20yrd runs… aaaakkk..what is happening? I love la-la-land….I don’t want to leave until the handfull of weeks is over and I have to look at reality again.

I say 2 weeks
By the time the Cowboy/Broncos game is over we are gonna have some sort of Idea what the Broncos are gonna do. Like 13-3

I agree, Mike
I’ve contemplated the returner position for some time and I agree with you regarding Alridge. I think the Broncos would like to find someone other than Royal to handle the kickoff returns. Royal should be limited to handling punt returns (generally). It’s my impression that kickoff returns involve more violent collisions. I trust the ‘X & Os’ guys can correct me if this is wrong.
Part of the dilemma also involves finding special teams’ roles for backups, whose role is limited during the game may be very limited on offense/defense. A back like Alridge can provide a change-of-pace for several carries (~5?) while also providing a very valuable contribution on STs. The 45 man roster makes it hard to include people on each weeks’ active list unless they’re making a substantial contribution. They can’t just be emergency backups and slot-fillers on STs.

Let's not forget
that TD was “discovered” on Special Teams in Tokyo. Not running back kicks but in his tackling and general attitude of doing whatever it takes to make the team.

Colin You are right...
With Brandon gone Royal is going to have to step up and be special. He cannot do this if he is handling both kick-off and punt returns. We need Eddie to do something special on punt returns, we haven’t had this since Upchurch—I am looking forward to this year. Now that Brandon is gone the first two games we need to see that we can survive and thrive without him…Eddie Royal is a big part of this test.
Alridge and Hall will be a big question in this test. I have great hopes for this team. 13-3 all the way!

Well,
Guru has the answer up on the front page now. We now know the extent of the injury.

Too easy
Have a Broncos RB as your darkhorse is like predicting a first round nuggest playoff loss.

I was at camp and saw it happen...
you could tell right away that he was hurt. It looked bad…but that doesn’t always mean anything.
On the bright side…Alridge had an excellent practice. Also, Young, Hall, and Pittman all looked good as well.

How good is Torain?
I realize people may not appreciate me posting this after Torain’s injury but I think he deserves to have it posted somewhere. Here’s Shanny’s comment on Torain after the injury.
“It’s a big loss,” Shanahan said. “I thought he had a chance to compete to be the starting running back. He’s one of the most gifted running backs I’ve been around for a long time. He is very similar to Terrell Davis when he came in.—Shanahan, from the official Bronco website
