Torain MRI shows significant ligament damage

This report comes from CBS4 Broncos Insider Reggie Rivers:

The elbow injury that rookie tailback Ryan Torain suffered is worse than the Broncos expected. Torain had surgery Thursday morning and now is expected to be out for 3 months.

Initially he was diagnosed with a broken bone that would allow him to return to the field in 6 to 8 weeks, but an MRI revealed that the ligament damage was worse than expected, so Torain's rookie season is now in jeopardy and the Broncos are faced with a tough decision.

If they place him on injured reserve, he'll be ineligible to return this season even if his elbow healed faster than expected. If they believe that he'll be ready to return by mid-season, they could keep him on the 53-man roster, but they'd have to cut someone who could contribute right away.

The fact that Shanahan is even considering putting the rookie on injured reserve says a lot about how highly the Broncos value Torain. They don't have to make a decision about Torain's roster status until the end of August, so there will be plenty of time after his surgery to see how he's progressing and how likely he is to be ready by mid-season.

UPDATE:  Torain talks about his situation in his blog at DenverBroncos.com

The Broncos will wait until the end of August,

but 3 months means that he’ll have an even longer time rehabilitating his elbow. From what I hear from guys on MHR that have had this injury, he may never recover. Looks like we’ll be drafting another running back next year. :(

I remain hopeful that he’ll make a full recovery, but I am unwilling to make any bets until I see him next year.

Come on

They guys on MHR probably didnt have the Broncos medical staff and attention to rehab this injury or the opportunity for first rate surgeons to repair this injury. Plus nobody really knows how bad it is until the doctors go in and repair it. I tend to side on the opptomistic part of everything

Not entirely my field, Firstfan

I mostly did spine and post traumatic inflammatory work. But, to make it easy – BFSISD has the right of this one.

The guys on MHR probably didnt have the Broncos medical staff and attention to rehab this injury or the opportunity for first rate surgeons to repair this injury.

I haven’t seen the MRI or read its report, and I’d leave the final Dx up to the orthopedist and surgeon.

General points – this is an injury that runs the gamut. Some don’t heal, to be sure – but that’s far less likely in this case. The questions at hand are severity, which we don’t entirely know (at least, I haven’t seen the material on the Web) and care, which will be superb. He’s young, very healthy, highly motivated. His recovery odds are excellent. There is ligament damage, and it’s worse than the original reports. Yet, his care will be top drawer and it’s not, thankfully, his knee or ankle. Note – if, above, you hear me ‘dodging the question’, I’m not – but you can’t predict medical issues if they are complex without full information.

It’s probably important to note that this injury is not extremely likely to affect his running. It could perhaps affect his receiving if it heals poorly. In an extreme case it could affect his taking handoff or be at risk of re-injury, but this is much less likely. It was caused by a weird fall, it’s an unusual injury for a RB, and unless the issue is confidence, he will probably be running at full speed shortly after the bye. Worst case shouldn’t be more than that he will know the playbook inside out plus the defensive tendencies of each of our opposing D’s and he’ll fight like crazy for the starting job next year. Far more likely, we’ll see him as the season goes on, which could be a very good thing. Hope this helps. Take heart!

Another clue Doc.

After seeing the MRI, word is that he’ll be out 3 months. Nobody is yet calling it season ending. Though his recovery may not go well, I see the variables lining up as you do (youth, professional athlete health, best possible medical care, etc). I don’t have near the knowledge you do, but I’ll hazard a guess that he’s out for the year and back next year.

rehab

At the risk of adding little to your comment, I wanted to stress the importance of an athlete’s commitment to physical rehabilitation. Injuries have an objective/medical side but much of the recovery is also dependent on the athlete’s approach to rehab. Injuries don’t just heal themselves, it takes a tremendous amount of work, and this also involves overcoming emotional trauma. Dealing with injuries reminds me of the task of Sisyphus, you have to keep working at it despite seemingly impossible odds. What distinguishes many star athletes is their refusal to accept setbacks and the single-minded nature with which they pursue the goal of returning to prior form.

I was one of the ones that had this injury...

and I don’t think we were saying he will never recover, just that the 6-8 week timeframe they were stating yesterday was pretty unrealistic.

by Denverjhawk on Aug 7, 2008 11:48 AM MDT reply reply   0 recs

I agree

As the other one who has had they’re elbow broke getting it hyperextended (nothing like watching your arm bend the wrongway), you can recover from the injury, my right arm (broken one) is a little stronger now then my left, but it does take a lot of time, when you have to have your arm imobile for 6 weeks in a cast, your muscles start to shrink, and that’s what takes time to get them back in shape, and I am sure some ligments will need to be worked on. I never got an MRI, just a bucnh of x-rays and they said I lucked out in that they didn’t have to put pins in, which would of been a longer rehab. I think people are fooling themselves in thinking he will play this year.

You said it

Shawn never impressed me as a RB, I think he was a product more of being behind Jones and Hutchenson, than being a great RB, he always ran too upright and didn’t look to punish a tackler, more like he wanted to avoid being hit. I am guessing Denver will snag someone on the waiver wire as camp ends.

Eligible for the P.U.P.?

I just read something from Rotoworld that says, because Torain practiced in training camp, he’s not eligible for the P.U.P. list. Anyone know if this is accurate?

by bradley on Aug 7, 2008 11:56 AM MDT reply reply   0 recs

I don't think that is true. I believe Rod practices in training camp last year...ever so briefly.

And he ended up on PUP then IR.

There are 2 PUP lists....

Active PUP and InActive PUP….

The Active PUP allows players to start training camp on the list, but they can come off at any time. Once you practice, however, you cannot be placed back on the Active PUP. The player still counts against the 80 man roster limit at this time.

The inactive PUP is the one you are likely more familiar with. Once placed on the InActive PUP, you are out of action, no practices, nothing, for the first 6 weeks of the season. The player is also NOT part of the active roster. After that, the player is allowed to practice for 3 weeks before the team has to make a decision on his roster status. If the player is activated, a roster move is required. If not, the player is placed on IR.

I hope that clears it up for you….

So the logical thing to do would be to put him on the inactive PUP list?

Then if he is ready we can activate him for the final 8 games of the season. Might be nice to have a fresh bruising RB for those games – if that scenario is at all feasible.

A good point was made in the comments of the blog...

That the Broncos may want to keep him around as he might be needed if/when our other RBs are a bit worn down later in the season. As JHawk mentioned before, our RBs are all a bit injury-prone.

Anthony Aldridge & Ryan Torian

Torian going down is a big loss. I thought he would be our starting running back this year. It is good to hear that Shanny compared him to TD. Hopefully they keep him active and just let him heal. Once he recovers he can come in midseason and surprise some people and go wild the second half of the season. This injury does open the door for Anthony Aldridge. I think he will pass Andre Hall on the depth chart. This kid is explosive. He is small but so is Brian Westbrook and he is the man. If they do not let him play RB look for him to really help out in the return game because Eddie Royal will be one of our starting WR and we can’t have him getting injured on ST. Thoughts?

by gnarlybroncodude on Aug 7, 2008 1:29 PM MDT reply reply   0 recs

Agree

Good break for Aldridge. I also see Aldridge or Hall returning since Royal will be starting wide out (next year).

Life goes on

I was hoping for big things outta Torain. I know that we weren’t great last year, but are we any worse? Torain hasn’t even played in a single preseason game yet. So…let’s get Selvin and Andre ready to go. We also have Aldridge and Pittman. It’s unfortunate, but it’s not the end of the world.

We won't miss him. The glass is more than half full!

Even with all the hype, as a rookie, 3rd on the depth chart, any chance of him playing this year was contingent on how well Young and Hall played. Yes, we know, Shanny will play anyone, but only if other starters are not getting it done. So to assume this really hurts the Broncos this year, especially the first half of the season, is to assume Young and Hall and now Alridge and Pittman will not get the job done. Thats definitely looking at the glass as half empty. I believe those other guys will get the job done. In fact I think we will have a very explosive offense and running game, and when it is all said and done, we won’t miss him much at all.

red zone

Looking at from the football perspective—Torain’s injury hurts the Broncos’ ability to run the ball in the red zone. We still have Pittman, as well as Hillis and the other FBs, but Torain’s loss appears to affect their power running ability in the red zone, and that was one area that they’d love to improve.

The question in my mind is whether they can adapt by changing their strategy somewhat. And they also still have some ability to run the ball in the red zone since it’s not a black and white situation, but they do lose Torain’s apparent proficiency in the area. There are still other red zone options that they can employ which are better suited to their current personnel. But admittedly, I still see it as a loss in this area.

Keeping Alridge on the roster strengthens them in a different area. I don’t know if the Broncos would have kept him on the regular roster given the numbers at RB. I’m hesitant to frame the roster decision on Alridge as contingent onTorain’s loss but depth at RB is obviously an important part of the roster decision concerning whether they keep him. I guess we can make a somewhat tentative conclusion that keeping Alridge may take us in a slightly different direction on offense. The remaining and unanswered question is how, as well as how well, they perform and adapt their strategy to achieve greater success in the red zone offense. Their short passing game - another weakness - may figure into this.

Yea and if any more RB go down we will be changing our tune on how vital Torain was

One more redzone/shortyardage option

Spencer Larsen, who had worked on both offense and defense during OTAs, was back working at FB in today’s practice. The staff had stopped using him at FB during camp but appears to be reconsidering the move.

Larsen’s position on the roster would appear somewhat tenous given the depth a MLB, although it’s hard to predict how many LBs will be on the final roster (although I still try). For whatever it’s worth, I’d projected they’d keep as many as 6, which would necessitate cutting either Larsen or Woodyard. Neither of them fit into the mold of a SLB, which would appear to be the position where they could best help the team, as a backup to Boss Bailey. Louis Green and Jordan Beck are currently 2nd and 3rd behind Bailey.

In tomorrow’s game at Houston, Larsen will see time at both the FB and LB positions. Using Larsen at FB is another possible answer to last year’s red zone problems and the loss of Torain. It could also provide a justification for keeping Larsen on the roster.

by Colinski on Aug 7, 2008 7:58 PM MDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

PUP

At a minimum, Torain will be out till November. The Broncos can wait until the 6 week PUP period & 3 weeks after that end before making a decision on whether to put him on IR for the year, or they can cut someone at that point to make room for him, which gives them some flexibility on the RB situation. We’ll just have to wait and see what our needs are at that point. His progress with rehab and the development of other backs in the interim will be factors in the decision.

I remain positive about the RB situation, although I won’t attempt to minimize Torain’s loss.

Here’s a question for anyone; can you go on PUP twice? Sounds like your season would be pretty much over anyways if you did, but some injuries take longer than the 6 + 3 week period to heal.
